“Teachers are this country’s silent, constant superheroes,” writes Alexandra Robbins in her new book, The Teachers: A Year Inside America’s Most Vulnerable, Important Profession. The book, which is filled with this kind of pablum, reminded me of nothing so much as a scene in the movie School of Rock where Jack Black, who is impersonating a substitute teacher, is asked about his educational philosophy by his colleagues. He proceeds to recite Whitney Houston lyrics: “I believe the children are the future … you can teach them well but you have got to let them lead the way.” The other faculty members nod along earnestly. Education is very important and teachers are the noblest among us. Well, probably some of them. And probably some doctors and lawyers and construction workers and pastors and the people who fix cars too. Maybe they will be the subject of future paeans.
Robbins, whose previous book Nurses was subtitled “A Year of Secrets, Drama, and Miracles With the Heroes of the Hospital,” has found a formula she likes. But the general public may find her latest love letter a little hard to take. After a few years in which teachers refused to show up for work and students fell hopelessly behind and were subject to the most outrageous forms of political indoctrination, one wonders how many Americans are buying the “teachers are heroes” bit anymore.

California attorney general Rob Bonta (D.) is blaming car manufacturers for the spike in car thefts that has occurred on his watch.
In a letter to Hyundai and Kia, Bonta and 22 other attorneys general on Monday claimed the carmakers helped fuel a national car theft epidemic by not installing engine immobilizers to certain vehicle models. The letter notes that over the past two years, carjacking teens launched viral TikTok tutorials on how to override certain Kia and Hyundai security devices.
But Bonta has done little to offset his state’s rise in car thefts. The attorney general boasted in 2022 that while homicides, property crime, and violent crime went up during his first year on the job, arrest rates and probation levels declined. Since taking office in 2021, Bonta has focused his efforts on investigating police and suing cities over their zoning policies as car thefts and violent crime mount. As a state legislator, Bonta helped secure softer sentencing laws and reduced jail time for felons.

Perhaps we can go back to the Good Old Days where babies were delivered (cheaply) by local midwives. Getting rid of ‘doctors’ who insist on the right to murder unborn children strikes me as a feature, not a bug.

That’s the one thing that too many American institutions cannot do these days. Companies, government agencies, and professional groups neglect their basic duties.
Instead, they chase the shiny objects of “diversity, equity, and inclusion,” or DEI, and search relentlessly for racism under every rock. Yesterday’s managers have become today’s magpies.
What could go wrong?
Everything.

As record numbers of fistfights are erupting amid a behavior crisis in the American public education system, more schools are attempting to use restorative justice—even though that process often makes behavioral problems worse.
Restorative justice is a remediation theory that suggests students respond better to affirmation-based conversations in which an adult de-escalates any problem situation by calmly discussing the students’ feelings about the problem until everyone agrees.
Restorative justice relies on student investment and commitment to say, “I am willing to do this.”
…
Proponents often point to schools that adopted the practice of restorative justice and saw a sharp decline in suspensions—Oakland Unified School District in California, for example. Although suspensions in Oakland Unified have decreased, the level of violence and total number of police incidents in the school district have not.
Few, if any, schools that have adopted restorative justice as a replacement for traditional discipline have seen a healthier school environment that is safer for teachers and students.

Next year a racist country will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. Segregation has made a comeback at colleges with racially separate dorms and graduation ceremonies. Corporate employees are expected to join the affinity groups of their race and employers and activists closely scrutinize the race, gender and sexuality of officials, executives and creatives.

The backlash began following an episode this past week of the YouTube show “Real Coffee with Scott Adams.” Among other topics, Adams referenced a Rasmussen Reports survey that had asked whether people agreed with the statement “It’s OK to be white.”
Most agreed, but Adams noted that 26% of Black respondents disagreed and others weren’t sure.
…
“Based on the current way things are going, the best advice I would give to white people is to get the hell away from Black people,” Adams said on his Wednesday show.
All perfectly reasonable positions. The problem is that Dilbert is syndicated to run in newspapers, bastions of the Woke agenda. Fortunately nAdams long since accumulated ‘fuck-you’ money, so he can afford to express his opinions honestly.

Many commenters on the Left have situated the arrest of Tyre Nichols—the black man who was evidently beaten to death by five Memphis police officers, also black—as a racial issue. White supremacy, they say, does not require the presence of white people to effect its ugliness, because black people—especially those working in a structurally racist institution such as policing—internalize the racist attitudes of whites. There is, according to these pundits, a close parallel between the Nichols case and other abuse cases involving white cops and black victims, because many blacks absorb racist views about blacks and enact them against their own race as enforcers of white supremacy.
It makes more sense to interpret the beatings that resulted in this young man’s death as another case of black-on-black crime. Those five black police officers constituted a gang of thugs which unleashed its viciousness against an innocent victim. This is the trauma many blacks in inner cities suffer every day from the gang members who prey on their neighborhoods.
Blacks targeting other blacks for murder is the most systemic form of racial profiling that exists in the U.S. today. Black-on-black crime is a national security disaster and risk. It betrays a deep current of black self-hatred that expresses itself in homicidal rage turned largely against black people.

In ritzy Dana Point, CA an emergency room doctor was riding his bicycle on Pacific Coast Highway. He was stopped at a red light in the bike lane when the driver of a Lexus hit him at high speed, sending the doctor flying perhaps 40 feet through the air. The PoC driver then did a u-turn, got out, yelled about “white privilege,” and attacked the prostrate white doctor with a knife and a BB gun. Brave onlookers apprehended the maniac, but the poor doctor died in his own emergency room.

What happened: Democratic activist and NBA star Stephen Curry wants to block construction of a multifamily housing unit near his $30 million estate in the San Francisco suburbs. Curry and his wife Ayesha expressed “major concerns in terms of both privacy and safety” regarding the proposed development of up to 16 townhouses on a site currently occupied by a single-family home in Atherton, Calif., where an acre of land costs $8 million.
“We hesitate to add to the ‘not in our backyard’ (literally) rhetoric, but we wanted to send a note before today’s meeting,” the celebrity couple wrote in a Jan. 18 letter to the town government. “Safety and privacy for us and our kids continues to be our top priority and one of the biggest reasons we chose Atherton as home.” According to Almanac News, the Currys also said they were “pleased” to learn that the proposed development “would not contribute to very-low or low-income housing quotas required by the state.”
Why it matters: Rich liberals insist the world would be a better place if people like them were in charge of everything and could force ignorant racists to embrace liberal policies such as increasing the availability of affordable housing units, homeless shelters, and wind farms. The Curry situation is one of many examples of how rich liberals immediately abandon their support for these policies when local politicians try to implement them within sight of their illustrious mansions.
I doubt that 16 townhomes in Atherton on land that goes for $8 million an acre are going to be purchased by plumbers or crack dealers. I suspect they’ll work for Apple or Google.

Institutional momentum continues to build in wealthy parts of the country where blacks were historically least oppressed by slavery and Jim Crow for cashing in white guilt over George Floyd as racial reparations before whites wise up (or cynical Asians and Hispanics take over).
For example, posh Evanston, Illinois (where 91 percent voted for Biden in 2020), has already handed out $25,000 reparation vouchers to sixteen black residents, with The Washington Post complaining that’s not fast enough. And the state of Illinois (Biden 58 percent) is gearing up its African Descent-Citizens Reparations Commission.
Likewise, the state of California (Biden 63 percent) has a Reparations Task Force assigned to come up with a proposed payout to blacks (not that California was ever a slave state), with the chairwoman currently talking about six or even seven figures.
