Sheriff’s deputies in Compton are returning to their patrol duties Monday following a chaotic weekend that involved a series of street takeovers and a mob of looters that left a trail of destruction at local stores.

Video captured a wild scene at an Arco gas station near Alondra Boulevard and Central Avenue early Sunday morning where a large group was caught on video bum-rushing an Arco gas station and stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise, all while the clerk on duty hid inside.

The video shows one man breaking the glass door while dozens of looters crowd behind him. Moments later, the group was seen grabbing everything from drinks, snacks, alcohol and even condoms.

Deputies with LASD’s Compton station had been responding to several illegal street takeovers earlier in the night, LASD said.

Transgender professor Deirdre McCloskey backed out of a debate at the University of Pittsburgh with conservative commentator Michael Knowles, despite expressing confidence in winning the debate in the weeks prior.

McCloskey, who identifies as a transgender woman, said the debate with Knowles, originally scheduled for April 18 at the University of Pittsburgh, “would not be a rational debate but a fascist rally,” Campus Reform reported. Knowles announced the change on Tuesday.

“I’ve just learned that Prof. McCloskey has dropped out of our debate scheduled for next week,” Knowles tweeted Tuesday. “For weeks, he’s baselessly smeared me as a ‘fascist’ but nonetheless insisted upon the importance of debating ideas rather than running from them. Apparently he’s changed his mind.”

“It’s telling that even a distinguished scholar with three Harvard degrees and half a dozen honorary doctorates cannot defend transgenderism,” Knowles added. “Of course: The ideology is indefensible.”

McCloskey explained his decision to back out of the debate, saying, “I decided not to participate in giving him a platform” and claiming Knowles is “utterly uninterested in finding the truth.”

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on Friday explained his failure to disclose trips paid for by a friend, conservative billionaire Harlan Crow.
Thomas said in a statement that Crow and his wife, Kathy, are “dearest friends” and that he and his wife have joined them on family trips for years.
“Early in my tenure at the Court, I sought guidance from my colleagues and others in the judiciary, and was advised that this sort of personal hospitality from close personal friends, who did not have business before the Court, was not reportable,” Thomas said.
“I have endeavored to follow that counsel throughout my tenure, and have always sought to comply with the disclosure guidelines,” he added.

Exactly so. If you have a billionaire friend, and you are both going to the same place, and he invites you to ride along with him on his private jet, do you refuse so that you can fly commercial? Only if you’re stupid. There is no evidence, there is no allegation, that Crow received any kind of favors from Thomas, or had any matter before the Supreme Court; if he did, I will bet you a paycheck that Thomas would recuse himself for precisely this reason.

This is just another chapter in the eternal witch-hunt for the Oreo On The Supreme Court, just as the pack baying after his wife is an extension of the same. Nothingburger. Big time.

The new racialized politics sunders the basis for liberal societies, essentially diminishing the value of merit and hard work. Some advocates even support separate living places on college campuses, a chilling reprise of segregation. Elsewhere, grade schoolers are instructed that America is based on lies and its current systems and structures are irredeemable. There are cases of schools separating third-graders by race and asking them to rank their “privilege.”

But it all serves to justify a cultural revolution to denigrate the heroes of the Old Canadians so that the New Canadians don’t have to be reminded that You Didn’t Build Canada.

While checking out the “banned and challenged” display at my local Barnes & Noble recently, I was reminded that the entire kerfuffle is a giant racket.

For publishers and booksellers, “banned” books are likely a money-making racket. Virtually every allegedly “banned” book on the display table is already a massive (sometimes generational) bestseller.

Not that this reality stops authors like Jodi Picoult, whose books dot virtually every bookstore in the country, from running around pretending their novels are “banned” because a sliver of taxpayers are no longer on the hook to buy them.

For the Left, the banned book claim is a political racket, allowing them to feign indignation over the alleged “authoritarianism” of Republicans who don’t want kids reading identitarian pseudohistories or books depicting oral sex, rape, violence, or gender dysphoria in their schools.

Yet, major media now regularly contend, as indisputable fact, that “book bans” are in place. The claim is embedded in the Democrat’s daily rhetoric.

The new budget sets funds for libraries to $0. Library groups say the move is retaliation for suing the state over its recent book ban law.

Oh, ya think?  The modern clerisy has gotten used to having their own way at taxpayer expense too long. It’s time they re-learned the facts of life.
