Rick Perry and Texas Job Numbers

17th August 2011

Read it.

Full disclosure: I don’t like Rick Perry for our next president. I have my reasons that aren’t worth going into here. However, when I was watching the GOP debate and pro-Perry people started bringing up Rick Perry’s job numbers as a cudgel against other candidates, I looked into the BLS data on Texas jobs. Having familiarized myself with the data, I started noticing claims on the Texas jobs data that started popping up that directly contradicted what I was seeing in the data. So I wanted to clear up a couple of these common misconceptions.

Yep. You win. Texas is an employment paradise.

Enjoy it while you can; when you run out of water (which will happen sooner rather than later given the influx of millions looking for work) folks’ll move back North. Unlike jobs, water can neither be created nor destroyed by ordinary political means. (My apologies to Newton.) If you think it can’t or won’t happen, just remember Georgia.

And I’m still not moving down there.

Last time I looked, Georgia had plenty of water. In any event, Georgia isn’t Texas. And I predict that Michigan will run out of money before Texas has run out of water. (Oh, look! That already happened!)

You can’t imagine how pleasant it is to hear that you’re not moving down here. We want people who are willing to work.
