Michael Coren and the Danish psychologist Nicolai Sennels discuss the inherent psychological differences between Muslim immigrants and their European hosts. These differences contribute to the immigrants’ criminal behavior and their lack of integration into their adopted countries.

It was a tough week for racial witch hunters. In fact, it’s been a tough quarter-century for them.

Funny how that works.

Here are ten examples of fabricated “hate crimes” that fuck it up for those of us living in the real world.

‘Lead Us Not Into Penn Station’

24th May 2012

John Derbyshire, Patron Saint of Dyspepsia, reads a magazine on the train home.

New York magazine is an unlikely purchase for me—it’s a lefty-metrosexual-fashiony thing filled with subject matter of zero interest to me and with advertisements for things I shall never buy. In some cases I do not even understand what’s being sold (“latitude and longitude cufflinks”…wha?). In other cases I actively deplore what’s being sold (“designer children’s wear”—right, let’s get the little tots on the consumerist-fashion treadmill as early as we can). This issue’s “Intelligencer” page featured an array of 36 celebrities. The only one I’d ever heard of was Angela Lansbury. I think the last time I bought an issue of New York was in some year beginning “197-.” So, no, I’m not a big reader of New York.

That’s the protection racket: If you want your safety to be guaranteed, you must conform to our behavioral demands.

Democrats Violate Budget Control Act

23rd May 2012

Read it.

My, what a surprise! Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

But the Democrats’ number is by no means random. On the contrary, the $14 billion that Conrad added is enough to match the discretionary spending that was called for in President Obama’s proposed budget–the one that not a single Democratic Senator or Representative voted for. So here the Democrats are engaging in the ultimate hypocrisy. They vote against the President’s budget because they do not want to associate themselves with its profligacy, lest they pay a price with voters. But then they turn around and slide the appropriators enough extra money to match the budget that they just voted against, confident in the belief that budgetary matters are too complicated for voters to understand, and that their friends in the media won’t blow the whistle on them.

Cruz, si. Dewhurst, no. Leppert, WTF?

23rd May 2012

Read it.

In the Texas GOP Senate primary between the moderate and establishment David Dewhurst and the anti-establishment conservative Ted Cruz (who is surging in a new poll), who has been endorsed by almost every prominent conservative, including Sarah Palin, whose support often serves as the gold standard for anti-establishment conservative fighters, a third candidate who is even more liberal than Dewhurst, Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, is strangely trying to rebrand himself as a conservative.

But upon closer examination of Leppert’s record, one wonders if he even belongs in the Republican primary. Leppert’s record and associations can only make conservatives and Republicans scratch their heads. Leppert sought ACORN’s support and supported sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants. He sought the support of another liberal union, SEIU. One of his first acts as Mayor was to raise taxes. And, as a high-ranking official in the failed Washington Mutual bank, Leppert said the bank had “good things ahead” merely two weeks before the bank disastrously collapsed.

So the 9-year-old decided to start a blog with photos and vital statistics about her meals. Martha’s dad just met with the local council, and it announced that kids could have unlimited salad, fruit, and bread.

EPA’s War on Fossil Fuels

23rd May 2012

Read it.

It was found in a recent poll that only 28% of likely voters believe the EPA properly balances the need for economic growth with the need for environmental protection.  The Obama administration has done nothing to address these concerns, and still continues to support the agency’s harsh policies on fossil fuels.  These restrictions are hurting consumers, workers, the economy and our national security.  Fossil fuels like petroleum fuels and petrochemicals are proven, reliable and efficient sources of energy that keep us moving forward and sustain our modern lifestyles.

My, what a surprise! Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

The Most Comma Mistakes

22nd May 2012

Ben Yagoda is a champeen grammar nazi.

The syntactical situation I’m talking about is identifier-name. The basic idea is that if the name (in the above example, “Jessie”) is the only thing in the world described by the identifier (“my oldest friend”), use a comma before the name (and after it as well, unless you’ve come to the end of the sentence). If not, don’t use any commas.

Hate Them Because They’re Beautiful

22nd May 2012

Freeberg waxes philosophical, and makes some very good points.

With that in mind, then, now consider my complaint about women who have real power — women who can argue with others about what is to happen to my health care, my taxes, and the products I require, from bullet cartridges to light bulbs. It is a close-cousin complaint of “Real women don’t look like that,” with two important differences: One, rather than being beautiful, they’re all ugly. Opposite direction, but equal distance. Even greater distance, really. I can go out on a weekend, shopping, meeting random people — I’m very, very sure I will catch a glimpse of some women who look like Megyn Kelly before I meet even one that looks like Donna Shalala, Janet Reno, Sonia Sotomayor, Geraldine Ferarro, Ruth Bader Ginsburg or Madeleine Albright.

Second difference: These ugly broads have real power. Gretchen Carlson can’t make me do a damn thing, other than occasionally wish some centerpiece on the coffee table would be moved slightly out of the way. Can’t stop me from doing anything. Can’t make anything I buy any harder to get, or more expensive…she can’t even start to do any of these things.

53,000 Dead Registered Voters in Florida, Millions Nationwide

20th May 2012

Read it.

And every damned one of them a Republican! Oh, wait….

Federal law requires states to have a reasonable voter list maintenance program and gives the Eric Holder Justice Department the power to sue states that don’t. Not surprisingly, Holder’s DOJ has not brought a single case under the law to require states to clean up corrupted voter rolls. Indeed, when I served at the DOJ Voting Section, an announcement was made in November 2009 that this provision of the law would not be enforced. The political leadership was philosophically opposed to the law, and they said so.

My, what a surprise! Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised. Very nice of Attorney General Holder to leave all those bogus Republican voters on the rolls. What a guy.

Opt Out of School Lunch

20th May 2012

Read it.

School food is always a hot topic, and is perhaps more so now than it’s ever been. From a publicity standpoint, school food has taken off as an issue largely due to the efforts of Oliver and First Lady Michelle Obama. But viewed from the standpoint of edibility, cost, and healthiness, food served by public schools via the USDA’s National School Lunch Program was already an issue because that program and its food have a decades-long track record of sucking. And in spite of the best efforts of Oliver and Mrs. Obama, along with new rules set to take effect in the coming months, I’m not optimistic that the quality of school food is likely to change anytime soon.

Since when is it the job of the government to take charge of what kids eat in schools?

Since when is it the job of the Federal government to take charge of what kids eat in schools?

Since when is it the job of a non-boarding school to provide students with breakfast, lunch, and (in all to many cases) dinner?

Consider the ‘pink slime’ controversy earlier this year. Whether you were up in arms over chemically treated meat or thought it was completely fine to eat, the truth is if you’re a public school parent whose child eats a school lunch you still have little say over whether or not your child eats pink slime—or genetically-modified foods, sugars, starches, and a whole host of other foods about which decent parents (and experts) disagree.

Too bad. Nanny knows best.

Kiss Aero Goodbye

20th May 2012

Read it.

While we’re still curious to see if Microsoft can better integrate the desktop and Metro environments of its latest operating system, the company has now revealed a significant change to the desktop portion of Windows 8 — a completely restyled visual appearance. As you might remember from the Consumer Preview, window borders and widgets featured a simplified and subdued look in comparison to the glass-like materials of Aero, which Microsoft now calls “dated and cheesy.” With the latest refresh, however, the company has pushed its modernistic philosophy even further to reveal a spartan (yet functional) interface that draws less attention to the chrome elements and allows the user to focus more on content.

In other words, using the power available in modern graphics chips for a dramatically beautiful interface is ‘dated and cheesy’, but reverting to a look that could have been accomplished on Windows 3.1 is not. I see. It’s all clear to me now.

I’m still waiting for Bill Gates to bitch-slap Steve Ballmer for ruining his company. Steve Jobs wouldn’t have tolerated this shit.

Tax History: Why U.S. Pursues Citizens Overseas

20th May 2012

The U.S. is the only country that taxes its citizens on their world-wide income, no matter where they live.

OK, there’s also Eritrea. It imposes what is derisively termed a “diaspora tax” on its citizens.

Does Jeremiah Wright Have a Place in This Campaign?

18th May 2012

Other than Under the Bus, of course.

I have often suspected that the reason Barack Obama adopted Wright as his preacher was that he wanted to be around a ‘black’ man who looks whiter than he is. Part of his attempt to self-identify as black, no doubt.

When we see on the news and in the papers ‘black people’ like Barack Obama, Eric Holder, Jeremiah Wright, and Colin Powell, who would be taken for white in any part of sub-Saharan Africa, can one wonder at Elizabeth Warren pretending to be a Cherokee?

Fat, Broke and Single?

18th May 2012

Read it.

Like the French language, the liberal brain works in reverse. Where we say “the red book,” the French say “le livre rouge.” They start with a blank book and work backwards to fill it in with rouge. Liberals start with, “All men are created equal” and walk backwards from there without looking. If everyone isn’t succeeding equally, it can’t be because they made some bad decisions or have unequal abilities. It’s because we didn’t do enough.

If America is fat, it must be because nobody told them food is fattening. If women earn less than men, it must be because of sexism. If gays aren’t getting married, it must be because homophobes are cockblocking them. If the top ten mathematicians of all time are white males, it must be because nonwhite mathematicians with vaginas suffered discrimination.

Arbitrary Intervention

17th May 2012

Bryan Caplan speaks a little inconvenient truth.

Imagine writing a list of everything wrong with the world.  There’s hunger.  Broken hearts.  Unemployment.  Screaming at your kids after a bad day at work.  Cheating on your girlfriend.  Pollution.  Heretics.  Burning of heretics.  Promiscuity on TV.  Promiscuity in real life.  Obese kids.  Obese adults.  People coughing without covering their mouths.  The Islamist threat.  Seniors eating dog food.  The decline of marriage.  Bosses who scream at their workers.  Kids who don’t call on Mother’s Day.  People who don’t read books.  School bullying.  Boring jobs.  Boring teachers.  Men dying years younger than women.  People who don’t know how to start small businesses.  You could go on and on.  And on and on and on.

Go on, try it.

Now ask yourself, “How many of these problems does government even claim to try to alleviate?”  No matter how statist your society is, there are probably ten problems the government ignores for every problem it tries to address.

Do Poor People Ignore the Government’s Dietary Advice Because They Can’t Afford Healthy Food?

17th May 2012

Read it.

Apprently not. It would seem that poor people eat energy-dense non-SWPL foods because they taste good, which makes perfect biological sense.

Obviously, not all shoppers are trying to minimize calories, but that doesn’t mean they are trying to maximize them. Different consumers have different values, tastes, and preferences, and some would rather eat the calorie-dense foods they enjoy than forgo that pleasure for the sake of better health in the long run. Is that really so hard to comprehend?

Only by people who think that they are the Burger King, and would rather that you have it their way.

Goodbye, Military Chaplains

17th May 2012

Rod Dreher sounds the alarm.

Remember how no clergy member will be forced to perform same-sex marriages against their will. If the Obama administration has its way, all US military chaplains will have to do so. Excerpt:

The Obama administration “strongly objects” to provisions in a House defense authorization bill that would prohibit the use of military property for same-sex “marriage or marriage-like” ceremonies, and protect military chaplains from negative repercussions for refusing to perform ceremonies that conflict with their beliefs, according to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

If this goes through, the Catholic and the Orthodox chaplains will have to be withdrawn from the US military. Many Evangelical chaplains will choose to leave. If same-sex marriage is constitutionalized by Supreme Court ruling, then I don’t see how even a legislative exemption would be possible. This is another one of the answers to the question, “How does my gay neighbor’s marriage to his partner affect me?”

It should come as no surprise that politicians lie to get their programs passed, and then let the hammer down.

The strategy of the pro-SSM side seems to be to deny that anything like this could possibly happen, and that people who say it could are being irresponsible scaremongers. Then when it actually happens, they’ll say oh, who cares; those bigots deserve what they get.

My, what a surprise. Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

Utah School Fined $15,862 for Accidentally Selling Soda at Lunch

17th May 2012

In order to remain eligible for federal subsidies for school lunches, officials at Davis High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, knew they weren’t allowed to have active vending machines selling soda and candy in the school lunchroom during the 47-minute lunch period.

But rules designed to keep kids from washing down their lunches with something fizzy can be tricky. That lesson was driven home when the state Office of Education’s Child Nutrition Program hit the school with a $15,862 fine—75 cents per violation over the period of many months that it turns out students had been illicitly selling soda in the school store.
