Democratic Congresswomen Want to Lower Federal Voting Age to 16

6th March 2019

Read it.

I think that they ought to raise it back to 21. The pathetic excuse used to lower it to 18, that there was a draft and that people who could be called on to die for their county ought to be able to vote, no longer applies.

I don’t agree with “pathetic excuse”. If you can be drafted, you should have the ability to vote for representation. You should also be able to buy beer, drive a car, consent to sex, get married, have a bank account, etc.

A smart move might be to make the age of majority to 21. The military doesn’t like that, as younger people are stupid and will do things on command, like charging a machine gun nest, while those even a few years older might stop to think about it. (Vietnam statistics showed that older service members had a much higher survival rate than 18 or 19 year old draftees.)

Channeling Heinlein, one could easily reach the conclusion that citizenship should be earned and not automatic, but that military service is a fast-track to citizenship. (Want to know more? See “Starship Troopers”.) In a hybrid system like that, citizens hold vote and can hold office while non-citizens just exist.

I’m pretty sure barista service would not be a citizenship path.
