Why, oh why, do so many articles about monuments from antiquity go on and on about how it was impossible for ancients to move giant stones.
They did move giant stones. In many places around the globe. It can be done if you put your mind to it, and they did. Get over it.
What better way to impress your barbaric neighbors than by constructing giant things? The palaces at Babylon are impressive even by today’s standards; imagine how intimidating it would have been to the slaves they marched into the city! The pyramids have awed people for 5,000 years. That was the intent.
Of course, the ancients didn’t have to contend with Muslims crashing planes into their monuments or blowing them up just to demonstrate how much damage a small IQ can actually do to civilizatiion.
