The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is among 10 of the world’s worst anti-Semitic organizations, the Simon Wiesenthal Center said Tuesday while unveiling a new report.
The list, which Wiesenthal Center founder and Dean Marvin Hier said “includes institutions that we never thought we would have to put on our top 10,” also singles out a purportedly Jewish organization. Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) opposes Israel’s existence. And it took advantage of the recent Hanukah holiday to solicit donations to build “a radical, loving, anti-Zionist Jewish movement for liberation.”

One of the most popular articles 15 years ago talked about the problem of the loud BEEP-BEEP sound made by heavy equipment backing up. This sound travels for huge distances and is the bane of everybody who is anywhere near construction, which is a lot of people, a lot of the time. The reason the blog post is popular is a lot of people come looking for solutions.
The noise is there for a reason of course, a large fraction of workplace deaths are people crushed by equipment backing up. Nobody wants to make that easier to happen.
A company called Brigade came up with a solution in 2000 and patented it. Their solution was simple. Instead of a pure, penetrating beep tone, they use a broad spectrum white-noise or pink-noise pulse. That pulse is very obvious to somebody beside the truck, but it fades into the background noise very quickly and so doesn’t travel to people who don’t need to hear it. Brigade also says the tone can be heard better with less energy, and people are better able to determine the direction it is coming from.
Those who first mandated the beep thought it was good that it was annoying and impossible to ignore — and thus went for a distance. Because it “travels” like this, on any construction site (or near one) you are hearing them all the time. You become used to them and even start to ignore them, and that is why people still get crushed.
So, how many years do you think it will take to convince government regulators?

ZMan looks on the dark side.
A little over a century ago, September 16, 1920, to be exact, a horse-drawn wagon packed with 500-pounds of dynamite exploded outside the headquarters of the J.P. Morgan & Co. bank on Wall Street. Thirty people were killed instantly and another ten died from their wounds. Over 100 other people were injured. The bombing was never solved, but everyone assumed it was done by anarchists. Anarchist terrorism was becoming common over the prior decade.
One consequence of the bombing was the federal government got serious about the communists and anarchists in the country. They rounded them up and deported them even though they could not pin the crime on them. The elites also gained a new perspective on immigration after this bombing. All of a sudden, letting anyone walk into the country was not so popular with rich people. Not long after, immigration was sharply curtailed, especially from Southern and Eastern Europe.
The incident is a good reminder of the reality of politics. Things that vex the people will be ignored until they begin to threaten the rich people. The bombing of the Los Angeles Times building in 1910 did not register with the ruling class, because the people running the country lived on the East Coast. The terrible impact of immigration on the working classes was considered a feature by the wealthy. When the reality of immigration landed on their doorstep, their attitudes quickly changed.

On Christmas day, the following statement popped up on Twitter:
Just so we’re clear on the Right’s agenda – racism good, abortion bad, money good, women bad, capitalism good, sustainability bad, stupidity good, science bad, power good, equality bad, white people good, nonwhite people bad. Stench, indeed.
Who wrote this simple-minded rant? Monica Casper. Who is Casper? The dean of the College of Arts and Letters at San Diego State University in California.
What support did Casper provide for any of her derogatory characterizations of the views of people on the opposite side of the ideological divide from her? None.

Just in case you were wondering. I know I was.
Of all the cute things dogs do, cocking their head to one side while they look at you may be the most endearing. Yet surprisingly little research has looked into why they do it. Now, a new study of “gifted” canines—those capable of quickly memorizing multiple toy names—shows they often tilt their heads before correctly retrieving a specific toy. That suggests the behavior might be a sign of concentration and recall in our canine pals, the team suggests.
I’ll bet you didn’t know that.

Tokamak Energy has announced the successful completion of tests of cryogenic power electronic technology for its superconducting magnets’ high-efficiency operation.
The company is working on fusion technology using a combination of spherical tokamaks and high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. According to Tokamak Energy, tests of the new power electronics showed twice the efficiency of previous systems, resulting in a substantial reduction in the power required to cool the HTS magnets, lowering the cost of future fusion power plants, a critical step toward commercializing and scaling fusion technology.

Californians will ring in the new year with the unfurling of a groundbreaking law that will change how they dispose of their organic waste, particularly leftover food and kitchen scraps.
Senate Bill 1383 requires all residents and businesses to separate such “green” waste from other trash, but the program will be rolled out gradually for homes and businesses in the coming months, with the actual startup date varying, depending on the location of your home or business.
Fines can be levied for failing to separate organic refuse from other trash. But those charges aren’t scheduled to begin until 2024. CalRecycle, the state agency overseeing the change, has lots of information about the new requirements on its website.
Time to leave.

The new totalitarianism that has descended over the Western world in the last two years varies in its intensity and emphases. New Zealand has one of the most repressive Corona regimes, right up there with Australia, Germany, Austria, Greece, and Canada.
Even though New Zealand has almost no COVID cases, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has imposed a draconian and finely-tuned lockdown on the populace. The government is vigorously pushing citizens to get vaxed. Ms. Ardern has stated in no uncertain terms that the populace will from now on be divided into two classes, the “vaccinated” and the “unvaccinated”, with the unvaxed having a more restricted set of rights and privileges. The prime minister’s approach makes sense, given that she was groomed by Klaus Schwab and the World Economic Forum as part of the “Young Global Leaders” group.
Australia and New Zealand remind us that, even in the Angl0-Sphere, fascism is only a ‘crisis’ away.

The figure shows temperature, CO2 concentration and insolation for the past 350,000 years, a period that covers four interglacials, shown as yellow columns, of which ours is the most recent. When I first saw it, as described in the previous post, I noticed something odd. In the first three interglacials, temperature follows the same pattern, rising steeply at the beginning then falling until the end. CO2 concentration follows a similar pattern except in the third interglacial, where it oscillates about a constant or slightly rising level.
The pattern in the fourth interglacial is quite different. For the first few thousand years it looks similar to the previous three but then the pattern reverses, with temperature and CO2 rising instead of falling through the rest of the interglacial.
What was different this time? The obvious guess was us. The reversal in the pattern happens at about the time that humans adopted agriculture, resulting in both a large increase in human population and a change in how humans affected the world around them.

At Intelligent Life, the Economist magazine where I worked for some years, it was easy to feel intellectually challenged. Even the interns all seemed to have Oxbridge Firsts. What a breath of fresh air, then, when the deputy editor’s son decided he didn’t want to go to university, and would instead apprentice as a blacksmith.
As legitimate an ambition as ‘aspiring rapper’, and probably more remunerative.

Nuclear power is going mini. Former SpaceX engineers are creating a portable microreactor that is lightweight and cost-effective, calling it the “world’s first portable, zero-emissions power source.”
It was originally a project imagined for Mars, but the team decided Earth needed it more (or, at least, sooner). So, they formed a company called Radiant to continue to develop the microreactor. Once ready, it could provide instant power to hard-to-reach places and quick installation in populated areas.
I’d buy one.

Writing doesn’t just communicate ideas; it generates new ones.
Writing forces you to think. It’s nature’s way of telling you how sloppy your thinking is. The ultimate test of how well you understand something is how clearly you can explain it in writing — clear writers are clear thinkers. As a wise” man once said: “everything is vague to a degree you do not realize until you have tried to make it precise.”

This week the US Navy announced that it seized some 1,400 AK-47 assault rifles and 226,600 rounds of ammunition from a “stateless” fishing vessel after it was intercepted in the North Arabian Sea based on suspicious activity, which led to a “flag verification boarding”.
The illicit weapons and ammunition were then transferred to the guided-missile destroyer USS O’Kane. The five passengers were reportedly Yemeni nationals. Subsequent reports suggested it may have been an Iranian smuggling operation into war-torn Yemen, where Tehran-backed Shia Houthi rebels have for a half-decade been battling the Saudi-UAE coalition which has also long enjoyed the support of the Pentagon.

Steve says what we all know to be true.
Earlier today, I wrote a lot of material about Biden’s dementia being “discovered” suddenly by CNN’s Jeff Zeleny, but I decided not to publish it. A video took the wind out of my sails. Biden and his wife made the mistake of taking Christmas phone calls on camera. They were pretending to track Santa’s sleigh. One caller said, “Let’s go, Brandon!” Biden said, “Let’s go Brandon. I agree.”
He had no idea what was going on.
If you watch the video, you will also see Jill Biden coaching her husband. Even Jimmy Carter didn’t need that.

Microorganisms can convert oil into natural gas, i.e. methane. Until recently, it was thought that this conversion was only possible through the cooperation of different organisms. In 2019, Rafael Laso-Pérez and Gunter Wegener from the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology suggested that a special archaeon can do this all by itself, as indicated by their genome analyses. Now, in collaboration with a team from China, the researchers have succeeded in cultivating this “miracle microbe” in the laboratory. This enabled them to describe exactly how the microbe achieves the transformation. They also discovered that it prefers to eat rather bulky chunks of food.
