A Paper Towel Dispenser With an End-User License Agreement Is a Special Kind of Hell

22nd June 2019

Read it.

The battle for supremacy in the world of hand hygiene is a dirty one, and nothing demonstrates this better than the depressing sight of a paper towel dispenser with a EULA.

That’s right: even dumb plastic boxes whose only use in this world is to hold paper towels apparently need an end-user license agreement now. In this case, the EULA — spotted by Harvard Library curator and Twitter user John Overholt at a recent conference — forbids the people who have to refill this Tork dispenser from using rival, non-Tork products.

What a world.

The Times Tips the FBI

21st June 2019

Read it.

Over the years we have documented the incredibly serious and damaging violations of the espionage laws committed by the New York Times colluding with current and former government officials. I recently took a glancing look back at a few of the highlights in “Tears of the Times.”

Working for the Times, James Risen was a prominent culprit. When the government identified and prosecuted one of Risen’s sources (disgruntled former CIA officer Jeffrey Sterling) for an incredibly sensitive story Risen retailed in his book State of War, Risen resisted the government’s subpoena for his testimony. Risen asserted an absurd claim of privilege that he took all the way to the Supreme Court, which declined to hear his case. I thought Risen should have been in the dock beside Sterling as his co-conspirator, but the government only sought his testimony.

The number of violations of various laws that ‘media’ organizations get away with is truly incredible.

Republican Segregationists?

21st June 2019

Read it.

Democrats are locked into their all race, all the time narrative, in which they try to paint Republicans as villains. This is utterly ahistorical, of course: someone should remind these ignoramuses that the Ku Klux Klan was the militant arm of the Democratic Party, and that avowed segregationists populated the Democratic Party until very recently.

Segregationists like James Eastland and Herman Talmadge, whose racist credentials have never been challenged. Joe Biden bragged about his ability to be civil and get along with senators of all sorts, citing Eastland and Talmadge as examples. (Particularly weird was his praise for Eastland on the ground that he didn’t call Biden “boy.” I won’t try to untangle that one.) Biden’s riff prompted considerable blowback, and this from MSNBC, which described Eastland and Talmadge as Republicans:

Well, they were segregationists, therefore they HAD to be Republicans. That’s as obvious as Trump’s racism.

MSNBC did eventually correct, but one has to wonder about an alleged newsperson who doesn’t know that the Southern segregationists were Democrats. (Fun fact: Bull Connor was a member of the Democratic National Committee.)

The knowledge of history by the garden-variety proglodyte extends back about five years.

UK Outlaws Gender Stereotypes in Advertisements

21st June 2019

Read it.

This is what happens in a country without a Bill of Rights. When the American Constitution was being hammered out, the rights enshrined in it were those considered to be the traditional rights and freedoms of British subjects, reduced to writing just in case public opinion (or government policy) changed in the future. I think recent history has underscored the wisdom of that approach.

Unfortunately, since class warfare became fashionable in the early 20th century, and socialism soon after, Britain has advanced quite a ways toward political totalitarianism, facilitated by the settled legal doctrine that Parliament can do whatever it damned well pleases and individual British citizens have no rights or freedoms to speak of (and certainly not to sue for).

So what is this ‘Advertising Standards Authority’? Well, Wikipedia says:

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is the self-regulatory organisation of the advertising industry in the United Kingdom. The ASA is a non-statutory organisation and so cannot interpret or enforce legislation. However, its code of advertising practice[1] broadly reflects legislation in many instances. The ASA is not funded by the British government, but by a levy on the advertising industry.

This body is not a public authority and has no legal power (and no accountability to the public) but appears to have been set up by the advertising industry itself in order to avoid regulation by an actual political authority. “Not long after the inception of the ASA the Molony Committee considered but rejected proposals to introduce a system to regulate the advertising industry by statute. The Committee reported that it was satisfied that the industry could be regulated effectively from within by the ASA.” I’ll just bet it was.

Blunders by Democrats and Capitol Police Enabled What Prosecutors Call the ‘Largest Data Theft in Senate History’

21st June 2019

Read it.

A rogue Democratic aide stole a massive trove of political data and used it to harm Republicans by “doxxing” them in what prosecutors call the “largest data theft in Senate history.”

The theft was made possible, and could have been much worse, because of myriad blunders by the Capitol Police and multiple Democratic congresswomen.

Jackson Cosko was sentenced Wednesday to four years in prison. Prosecutors called his offense an “extraordinary” and “vicious” crime where the ex-Democratic aide stole a senator’s data, mined it for blackmail material and then published the home addresses and phone numbers of Republican senators during the 2018 hearings for now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Isn’t it amazing how, with all of the complaints about Republicans that Congressional Democrats make, it’s somehow always a Democrat that goes to jail.

What’s Black, Brown, and Redlined All Over?

20th June 2019

Elizabeth Warren:

America needs to face the things we’ve done wrong and take steps towards making it right. My housing plan creates a first-of-its-kind down-payment assistance program to help Black and Brown families living in formerly redlined neighborhoods buy a home.

Steve Sailer:

Of course, who can remember George W. Bush’s push in 2002 to 2004 to increase black and brown homeownership by 5.5 million households by 2010?

How’d that work out anyway?

The reason banks ‘redlined’ certain areas is not out of racism but because those areas were behavioral sinks full of people who didn’t pay their mortgages (i.e. ‘bad risks’). Banks don’t exist to make loans, they exist to make money by making loans. Politicians (Democrats especially) routinely ignore that.

Slavery Reparations for Millionaires

20th June 2019

Read it.

“I stand here as a freed slave,” Rep. Jackson Lee had once declared on the House floor.

Her estimated net worth, as of 2015, is $3,547,506. The median House average was $800,000.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s annual salary, funded by taxpayers, is $174,000. Her husband, Elwyn C. Lee, is the Vice President for Community Relations at the University of Houston where he earns $239,501. The median salary at the University of Houston is $60,000. Lee sponsored or co-sponsored bills that sent $5.25 million to her husband’s employer in just two years. If anyone deserves reparations, it’s taxpayers.

Both Sheila Jackson Lee and Elwyn Lee are Yale graduates. Her son is a Harvard grad.

Isn’t it astonishing how much black people are oppressed in America? I mean really.

A Brief History of Barbed Wire

20th June 2019

Read it.

It wasn’t until 1874, when Illinois farmer Joseph Glidden emerged victorious from patent battle over a mechanically-produced fencing material that barbed wire could be made at scale. Glidden’s machine pulled two strands of wire tight around the barb, then wound the wires together around the regularly-spaced spikes. Just two years later, Glidden’s company was making 3 million pounds of the stuff each year, making Glidden a quick and sizable fortune. Other speculators won big on barbed wire, too. John Warne Gates, better known as “Bet-A-Million Gates,” went from selling the poky product to manufacturing “moonshine” (or unpatented) wire himself. His company was acquired by U.S. Steel, where barbed wire would make robber baron J.P. Morgan even richer.

The wire that won the West … and gave us the Hell of the Western Front.

Hackers, Farmers, and Doctors Unite! Support for Right to Repair Laws Slowly Grows

20th June 2019

Read it.

n the US, manufacturers in everything from consumer technology to farming and agriculture have long constructed systems that limit where customers can go for repairs—remember the old “warranty void if broken” stickers found on game consoles or TVs? Today if you have a broken iPhone screen, for instance, Apple runs Genius Bars across the country where users must go for permitted fixes. Other companies parcel work out to a network of authorized vendors. Manufacturers generally argue these constraints are necessary to protect proprietary information that gives their product a leg up in the overall marketplace.

Slowly but surely, though, consumers and third parties outside of vendor-sanctioned circles have been pushing to change this through so-called “right to repair” laws. These pieces of proposed legislation take different forms—19 states introduced some form of right to repair legislation in 2018, up from 12 in 2017—but generally they attempt to require companies, whether they are in the tech sector or not, to make their service manuals, diagnostic tools, and parts available to consumers and repair shops—not just select suppliers.

It’s Not Just Central America: Where Illegal Immigrants on the Border Come From

20th June 2019

Read it.

The recent spike in illegal immigration from African countries underscores the increase in migrants coming from around the globe to sneak across the southern border–including more than 10,000 from Asia and almost 900 from Europe last year.

In recent weeks, U.S. Customs and Border Protection apprehended more than 500 illegal immigrants from African countries that include Angola, Cameroon, and both the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Associated Press reported.

That’s more than twice the 211 total apprehensions during fiscal year 2018 of illegal border crossers from the continent.

The Biden Buggy

20th June 2019

ZMan looks over the field.

In 2016 there was the Trump Train, now we have the Biden Boat or, given his age, the Biden Buggy. According to all of the polls, even those in keys states, Joe Biden is the clear favorite to win the nomination. He’s polling at around 30%, which is twice his nearest rival. In fact, the latest batch has him with three times the support of Bernie Sanders, who has been in the second seat for a year now. Everyone else is in single digits, bobbing up and down with the news cycle.

Of course, there is a lifetime between now and the first votes. For a guy like Biden, who is pushing eighty, that could be literally true. He is by far the oldest man to run for the nomination and would be the oldest man to enter the White House if he won. Trump set the record when he was elected in 2016, but Biden is a decade older. It remains to be seen if the media will allow that to be an issue. Right now they seem to be tasked with selling good old Uncle Joe to the voters, as the sensible antidote to Trump.

I doubt seriously that Biden will get the nomination — he’s too old, too white, and too male for the modern Democrat party. But this nomination process will be entertaining to watch.

In fairness, Biden really is the Democrat version of Trump. They appeal to the same demographic. Biden has been pitching himself as “working class Joe” for close to a century now. It’s his go-to line whenever he is out campaigning. He tells voters about how everyone has known him as “working class Joe” or sometimes he uses the phrase “lunch pail Joe.” The fact that he has never done a minute of honest labor in his life never seems to matter. The old working class whites like it.

Well, we’ll see how that survives the process that gave us Hillary, possibly the worst Presidential candidate in living memory.

The Sticky History of Adhesives

20th June 2019

Read it.

Adhesives, you might say, have a bit of a sticky history. It’s easy to think about glue as we encounter it today: From bookshelves to flower beds to arts-and-crafts projects, we think of glue as an object to repair other things. It’s the stuff that sticks one thing to another–simple enough. Technologically, however, glue represents a complex series of decisions that our genus, Homo, has been making for millennia.

What Do the Oligarchs Have in Mind for Us?

20th June 2019

Joel Kotkin.

Almost 40 years ago, in his book The Third Wave, the futurist Alvin Toffler described technology as “the dawn of a new civilization” with vast opportunities for societal and human growth. But instead we are lurching towards what Taichi Sakaiya has called “a high-tech middle ages.” In his landmark 1973 work, The Coming of Post-Industrial Society, Daniel Bell predicted that, by handing ultimate economic and cultural power to a small number of technologists and financiers the opportunity to monetize every aspect of human behavior and emotion, we would be handing them the chance to fulfill “a social alchemist’s dream: the dream of ordering mass society.”

I love the smell of conspiracy in the morning.

“Migration Is Part Of The Model”: The Real Roots Of Central America’s Migrant Crisis

20th June 2019

Read it.

When the average American thinks about Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, their initial impression is typically that these are destitute countries overrun by crime, poverty and malnutrition, with central governments that are, at best, only semi-functioning. The crisis at the southern border has only helped reinforce these perceptions, as the mainstream media spins a narrative about impoverished migrant families fleeing the ravages of gang violence.

But if these Central American countries are so extremely impoverished poor, then why are bond investors willing to lend to Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador at interest rates on par with the preferential terms enjoyed by regional economic powerhouses like Brazil? The truth, as it turns out, is more complicated: All three countries are viewed as stable, even safe, investments because they spend almost nothing on government services. And most of what little is spent is siphoned off by graft.

I agree, although I would put health care and education in first place.

From Two Bulls, 9 Million Dairy Cows

THERE ARE MORE THAN 9 million dairy cows in the United States, and the vast majority of them are Holsteins, large bovines with distinctive black-and-white (sometimes red-and-white) markings. The amount of milk they produce is astonishing. So is their lineage. When researchers at the Pennsylvania State University looked closely at the male lines a few years ago, they discovered more than 99 percent of them can be traced back to one of two bulls, both born in the 1960s. That means among all the male Holsteins in the country, there are just two Y chromosomes.

Black Democrat Booed for Testifying Against Slave Reparations in Congress

A black writer was booed Wednesday for testifying against slave reparations in a congressional hearing.

Quillette columnist Coleman Hughes said reparation payments to the descendants of slaves would insult black Americans, further divide the country, and make him and other descendants of slaves “victims without their consent.”

The public present for the Democrat-led hearing did not take his opinion well, prompting Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen to tell them to “chill.”

In the first case of its kind Tendai Muswere admitted using the printer to make a revolver and a handgun out of plastic resin at his London flat.

The 26-year-old Zimbabwean national told police he had made the firearms to use as props in a film project for his course at London South Bank University.

Officers came across the 3D printed component parts for the guns while searching his flat for drugs in October 2017, following a tip-off that he was growing cannabis at home.

Scotland Yard said it feared the guns could have fallen into the hands of serious criminals.

Fortunately, this guy wasn’t a serious criminal.

The admission standards at ‘London South Bank University’ don’t seem to be very high.
