The rioters in Sweden were Muslim and certainly the ideology of Islam was part of the chaos, but Sweden’s multicultural policy choices literally added fuel to the fire–an open door policy that led to a fractionalized Muslim community that sees itself as separate from the nation in which they reside.

A neighbor of mine is Norwegian and was talking about how shocked she was when she last visited “home” and saw so many non-Norwegian folks engaged in all sorts of sordid activities. I remarked that it was surprising that Norway didn’t just expel the illegal immigrants. “Oh, they can’t do that!! That would make them like Nazis!”, she exclaimed. I tried to point out that there is a huge difference between protecting your country from invasion and singling out groups for extermination.
Her reaction seems to help explain part of the issue in much of Europe. To speak out against a particular group or take action against them invokes memories (or at least fake memories) of the days of Hitler. By the time people realize this isn’t the case, there are simply too many to deal with.
