Optical computing is faster than electronic computing, because photons are faster than electrons. It’s the next step in speeding up the machines, allowing more computing power and more bandwidth,

Also optical computing generates much less heat than the current method. Processors can be made smaller without the need to make provision for massive heat sinks and the like.

And it looks good. Anything “new” gets press and that gets you research money.
