Gays Against Gay Marriage
20th March 2012
Given that liberal/left heterosexuals have been campaigning against the institution of marriage for decades, why can’t liberal-left homosexuals? And why support gay marriage and not polygamy if love-feelings are all the rage? Where is the consistency in all of this “equality” talk?

Actually, I think instituting ‘civil unions’ for everyone and reserving the term ‘marriage’ for thos civil unions entered into under the auspices of a religious institution makes a lot of sense. After all, what is a ‘marriage’ performed by a judge joining two atheists who have never set foot into a house of worship and never intend to do so? It is a de facto Civil Union, and should be recognized as such.
The state has certain interests in the current instituion of marriage, in that it formalizes certain rights and obligations regarding property and who is financially obligated for the support of children. So a Civil Union which is functionally identical in all civil senses to what we now call ‘marriage’ would protect the interests of the social order while allowing the term ‘marriage’ to be exclusive to those civil unions which take place under the umbrella of a faith organization.
Then we could put this entire bruhaha to rest.
And just for the record, I have no problem with polygamy or polyandry or any permutations of same. I probably wouldn’t have a problem with people ‘marrying’ their dog or horse, either, assuming said animal could sign a marriage–or Civil Union–contract.
