The major problem with Detroit is that its footprint is larger than its population. They are still trying to maintain an infrastructure that was built to support 2 million. The size of the city hasn’t changed geographically, but the density has dropped drastically; they are trying to maintain services to outlying areas which may have only 2-3 occupied buildings per block. Police force inadequate? Yes, because a shrinking tax base has forced deep cuts in the force. But they still have to cover the same amount of ground with fewer bodies. Inevitably, response time grows.
The only folks left in Detroit are the poor. They have no jobs, no money to move, and nowhere else to go. Detroit is just a slow-motion repeat of the New Orleans Katrina debacle. And white folks are eating popcorn, watching the show, and congratulating each other on how superior they are.
Exception, Dennis – there are plenty of white folks left in New Orleans. They still have a viable tourist business and there is a lot of shipping traffic on the Mississippi. Like Detroit, New Orleans problems have historically been tied to corruption, but New Orleans has more to offer than closed factories. The neighborhoods that can’t be re-built in N.O. are a result of multiple deeds (or no deeds) existing for many of the properties.
I’ve been to both cities. I will happily visit New Orleans anytime. Awesome food, awesome music! There isn’t enough money or viable threats that would make me re-visit Detroit.
Ja, but Dennis, why is Detroit’s footprint larger than it’s population? Why aren’t there 2 million folks in Detroit? Why is there a shrinking tax base? Will you be moving and innovating and providing jobs in Detroit any time soon?
@ Lowly: Detroit’s population has shrunk because the auto factories closed, and anyone–black OR white–with the wherewithal has moved to where jobs are available.
So you’re suggesting that blacks are the reason Ford, GM, and Chrysler packed up their factories and moved them to China and Mexico?
