I notice that they claim that only the patient can make the decision, but then have provisions for “extra expertise” in case the patient can’t make the decision. It sounds to me like a more polite way of saying “You’re too expensive now that you’re old and sick, so your life has no value to us. Let us kill you to save money, while claiming that it’s the merciful thing to do.” Ugh.
Well, we’re on the brink of doing that with Medicare and Medicaid; the old and sick are now-or soon will be–too expensive. So the ‘entitlement’ programs will be pruned drastically on the rationale that ‘we can’t afford this anymore’. Then the old and sick will be thrown back on their own inadequate resources, after which they will die.
At least we’re up front about it. We don’t pretend to be doing it for humanitarian reasons. “It ain’t personal, it’s just business.”
