Considering how much it would cost him if he did marry her, I’d say he got off cheap. Because the world now knows the size of this ring, if he tries to wed another woman she will expect a better ring or he will never, ever live it down.
Technically, the ring is known as consideration toward the groom’s fulfillment of the marriage contract; but I’m not at all certain that’s the answer you were looking for.
I read a law journal article when I was a graduate student that argued that the value of the ring served as a form of mitigated damages for the woman in case the guy skipped out. I don’t remember the details bur I do remember it as being interesting. No doubt it’s online these days; I’ll see whether I can find it.

Perhaps he would be wiser to find a woman that doesn’t care about such baubles.
