I was reading a book on my Kindle during breakfast at a hotel on a recent trip. A couple sitting near me got up to leave and stopped at my table to ask if I liked my Kindle as much as they did. (“Absolutely!”)

Amazon doesn’t do anything particularly cool or exciting – they just operate following sound business principles. Want people to buy books through you? Market a cheap device that is easy to use and works well, then make it irresistible by letting the owner access public libraries and trade books with other Kindle owners. Also let them do subscriptions to magazines and newspapers through the device so it becomes their main reading tool. ebooks are cheaper for me to buy, more portable because of the Kindle, and Amazon makes a larger profit margin than with printed books.

Having the technology does not matter until you make it useful and available.
