Superheroes and International Law II: Unusual Sovereignties

3rd March 2011

Read it.

A little while ago we talked about some international law issues related to S.H.I.E.L.D. This time we’re going to talk about the stories where superpowered characters wind up actually running countries, and some of them quite peculiar countries at that.

Who says lawyers don’t have fun?

Actually, most of us say that, Tim. Or at least it’s, “Lawyers ARE no fun”, which is basically the same thing but more focused on ‘me’. Lawyers CAN of course be fun, but that usually involves pushing them down flights of stairs or something similar, and then there’s all that paperwork and lying to the authorities and such and so it eventually becomes a downer.

What you’re really talking about is lawyers having their own fantasy world, but the rest of us are pretty sure they’d just find a way to make it boring.

BTW, if someone reading this sucessfully markets a video game based on pushing lawyers down stairs, I get a cut.

No, no, it’s not about lawyers having a fantasy world — it’s about lawyers intruding into somebody else’s fantasy world and making it less fun. That’s what lawyers do.
