How is this possible? Adult women are slightly greater in number than men in most western countries. Are a significant number of women partnered with other women? Or is it that some women are sharing men?

I suspect that the attached women are attached to older men–you’ll note that the assertion was for people in their twenties. The technical term is ‘hypergamy’; read Tomassi’s THE RATIONAL MALE for how that works out in practice.
