One Response to “Ammunition Shelves Bare as Gun Sales Continue to Soar”
Ammo availability has improved dramatically in the past month or so. The Remington ammo plant is finally back on-line. (The previous owners ran things into the ground. There were big safety problems and lots of broken stuff. Also, the government took it’s sweet time approving the new owners and thus allowing manufacture.) Foreign ammo manufacturers have finally managed to get stock imported, and that’s helping.
Prices are way up and are expected to stay high because of rising prices for components like brass. Rumor has it that primers are up 50% to ammo manufacturers and are still extremely hard for reloaders to find. According to some entrepreneurs who tried to import primers, the government is blocking their efforts.
Local gun shops around this part of Texas have reported that they are getting larger ammo shipments than last month and while they have had to restrict the amounts sold to individuals, they have every popular caliber – including 9mm and .223/5.56 – on the shelves. Gun stores have more guns on the shelf as well, citing increased delivery from the manufacturers, new firearms coming from Remington, and a definite slowing in the gun buying panic. (In past panics I have noted that there comes a point where people seem to run out of money.)
The whole thing has had an interesting effect on gun shows. It used to be that gun shows were a great place to buy cheaper firearms and ammo from low-overhead, high-volume dealers. Now, you can usually find better prices on everything at the local gun stores. Gun shows have been overrun by the first time panic tourists and they’re making purchases without checking for value.
