My Great-Grandfather, the Nigerian Slave-Trader
21st July 2018
Nwaubani Ogogo was a slave trader who gained power and wealth by selling other Africans across the Atlantic. “He was a renowned trader,” my father told me proudly. “He dealt in palm produce and human beings.”
A useful reminder that there would have been no slave trade without black African suppliers.
The British tried to end slavery among the Igbo in the early nineteen-hundreds, though the practice persisted into the nineteen-forties.
Yet that never seems to get mentioned. Wonder why that is.
