Minimum Wage: You Want Jobs With That?
26th June 2017
As cities and states raise minimum wages to as much as $15 an hour, companies that rely on unskilled labor are cutting labor costs. Of course they are, though those like McDonalds with low-income customers will never tell you why. But businesses don’t spend a dollar when they can spend 50 cents. Employees who contribute less than their pay don’t stay employees for long.
Duh.

I’m so old that I can remember when teenage boys without any marketable skills could get jobs pumping gas… until increases in the minimum wage resulted in the ubiquitous self-serve gas station. The proliferation of fast-food joints at around that same time took up a lot of the slack for teenagers looking for after-school jobs, but now they’re going to lose even that. The whole concept of an entry-level job is what ends up getting lost in the process.

The dirty little secret is that the people who are trying to force increases in the minimum wage don’t want people to get entry-level jobs; they want such people to be unemployed and dependent on government benefits. That way they will vote for the people who promise to keep the payments coming.
