The student loan program is a major contributor* to the high cost of college. As long as it was easy to get loans, colleges were happy to keep increasing tuition and fees. Competition? Why bother! Like all such situations (e.g., the housing fiasco of a few years back), it eventually becomes so big that it has to collapse.

    * The other big contributor: Leftists running the schools.

Like health care, the conversation somehow got re-directed; “affordable” was redefined as “able to secure funds”, without regard to whether or not the student could be expected to repay the funds in a reasonable time period given an average college-degree salary.

As for “leftists running the schools”, isn’t maximizing income a capitalist ideal, and therefore the province of the right? If leftists were REALLY running the schools, attendance would be free for students and paid for with tax dollars. See Bernie Sanders for reference.
