A friend serving in Afghanistan sent me some photos of natives smoking pot. I asked how that was, since it’s supposed to be prohibited under Islam. He replied that most of the people he met were, “Muslim when convenient”, meaning they did whatever-the-hell they felt like most of the time, but suddenly became “Muslim” when it was convenient to try to get some cash out of the Americans or to just piss off other people.
Same is true with “moderate” vs. “extreme”. If it’s convenient to operate a store and be open and tolerant, then that’s the behavior. If it means getting special treatment or screwing over infidels, then expect the “Islam card”.
