Like the giant walking robot camels of Star Wars or the giant robots used to fight Kaiju in Pacific Rim, this is just a manifestation of the fevered Japanese teenage fantasy that also gave us Voltron and Mighty Morphen Power Rangers. Kinda neat in a “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if there were giant fighting robots??” sorta way, but not practical in the Real World of drones, tracked vehicles, and hovercraft.
I explained to my wife while we were watching Pacific Rim that no engineer in his/her right mind would come up with giant robots to solve this problem; they’d put a net over the hole and have fast-attack subs on patrol 24/7 around it. When the kaiju emerged and got caught in the net, they’d blow it to pieces with torpedoes, repair the net (strengthening it if needed), and wait for the next one.
But then, nobody ever accused the Japanese of being in their right minds…
