Wired Science, once a mainstay of technical journalism, is become a wholly-owned Voice of the Crust. This is in line with a general Left-ward drift of tech companies and the reporters/pundits who write about them and their activities.
Anybody who actually pries into the ‘science’ behind the Climate Change Alarmist industry will soon recognize that it’s merely politics with a scientific paint job, like ‘Soviet science’.

Like Uhlmann’s law of legislative analysis:
If an Act of Congress has a long title—lock up the children and run for cover.
Or Uhlmann’s Razor:
When stupidity seems a sufficient explanation, there is no need for recourse to any more elaborate analysis.
Uhlmann’s Razor also has a corollary known as Uhlmann’s First Law of Historical Causation:
It seemed like a good idea at the time.
And my personal favorite:
When evaluating the soundness of any moral proposition, law, rule, or regulation, however popular, to ascertain its true meaning, read it aloud slowly in a German accent.

Real life Portland is much, much worse, and it’s no joke.” His column is published at the Spectator USA together with the related video below (which is also posted here on his YouTube channel).

In her Minneapolis Star Tribune op-ed on the FBI’s just released 2017 Hate Crimes Report, Minnesota Rep.-elect Ilhan Omar presents herself as a sort of apostle of love. Omar decries the increase in reported hate crimes. However, she immediately attributes this increase to President Trump. As Omar puts it in her first paragraph: “The culture of intolerance spread by President Donald Trump has clearly emboldened racist individuals to acts of violence.” Something tells me that Omar’s message of love is a thinly disguised invitation to hate — to hate President Trump and his supporters, anyway

ZMan is pessimistic.
Georgia is one of the places to watch isf you want to get a partial glimpse into the future, as it is 61% white, but a growing portion of its white population is from outside the south. The Atlanta area has grown like a weed and much of the growth has come from attracting outsiders. A big chunk of those outsiders are Hispanics, so the state has a little bit of everything, as far as demographic challenges. As a result, it will be one of the first states to realize democracy cannot work in a multi-racial, multi-ethnic society.
I am not as pessimistic as ZMan, but it’s useful that we have Georgia as a test-bed to show us what can happen if the demographics go the way people are predicting.
This story from the past election is a good example of something that pale-folk will come to realize all over the country. That is, you can run out of places to hide. Georgia “solved” the problems of Atlanta by allowing the better parts to secede from the city proper, thus avoiding the challenges of being pale in a diverse city. This concept was applied to other areas that found themselves with a pale tax base, governed by a vibrant majority. Instead the residents fleeing the jurisdiction, the jurisdiction fled the people, so to speak.
A lot of places (New York, California) won’t allow that option.

The Other McCaine declines to get personal.
David French published a rather strange column at National Reviewentitled “The White-Supremacy Surge” that drags, among others, Milo Yiannopoulos, Allum Bokhari, Steve Bannon, Mytheos Holt, Corey Stewart and Rep. Steve King. Because I know David French and like him, despite his #NeverTrump politics, I don’t want to engage in ad hominem insults, as calling him a “cruise ship conservative” wouldn’t solve anything and would fail to accomplish my educational mission.
French cites an increase in “right-wing” racial violence as somehow linked to the sort of politics he despises, and doesn’t seem to have spent much time wondering about the connection between the two phenomena. Let us stipulate that the vast majority of racial violence, whatever its target or whoever its perpetrators, is committed by people who could justly be labeled losers or kooks. If racial violence usually reflects some combination of personal failure and mental illness, what does this tell us about the underlying causes of the “surge” French laments?
For those who don’t recognize the name, David French is a cuck who often writes for National Review and, not coincidentally, hates Trump and anybody on the Right who doesn’t kiss Crustian ass. (Stacy McCaine may be polite but I’m not.)

Everyone in Sudan assumes that next year President (dictator) Omar al Bashir will run for a seventh term. However, the economic decline that began last in 2017 has accelerated. The escalating economic crisis could become a political crisis that topples even an entrenched dictator like Bashir who has been in power for three decades. Moreover 2019 looks rather dire. Inflation is increasing. Economic analysts think hyperinflation is a possibility. Bashir of course blames U.S. sanctions, but those are being relaxed. Bashir’s critics blame his regime’s mismanagement and corruption. Critics point to the 2017 North Islamic Bank embezzlement scandal as an example. At least $230 million was stolen. Sudan has also borrowed a lot of money. It currently owes somewhere between from $55 billion to $60 billion, roughly 120 percent of GDP. Sudan owes China at least $10 billion and is in no position to pay back the debt. The loss of oil income is certainly a major factor in Sudan’s economic decline. When South Sudan became independent, it got most of the oil fields (roughly 75 percent of Sudan’s oil production). However, Sudan still has the pipelines and major oil port (Port Sudan). The truth is, government mismanagement has contributed to the loss of oil and oil transport income. When oil prices were high Bashir’s regime didn’t spend the oil revenue on modernizing its industrial and agricultural sectors. It didn’t spend much on upgrading its oil service industry. Instead Sudan spent the petrodollars on war (Darfur, civil war with southern Sudan) and military-related projects. A lot of government contracts went to businesses owned by government officials. Just how much is murky. At the moment the UN and EU estimate Sudan has around two million internally displaced people (many in the Darfur region and 900,000 refugees. About six million people are on the edge of starvation. In 2019 Sudan is supposed to have a national election. It could have another rebellion

Rich people are waking up to the fact that, despite paying most of the taxes, they’re not getting their ‘fair share’ of government services. So for mail (UPS/Fedex), law enforcement (private security guards), and now fire-fighting, they’re going direct rather than depending on a government that can’t or won’t provide services.

The coffee shop is quiet, probably as quiet as it can be while still being occupied. Even at its slowest and most hushed, the average background noise level hovered around 73 decibels (as measured with my calibrated meter).
That’s not dangerous—noise levels become harmful to human hearing above 85 decibels—but it is certainly not quiet. Other sounds that reach 70 decibels include freeway noise, an alarm clock, and a sewing machine. But it’s still quiet for a restaurant. Others I visited in Baltimore and New York City while researching this story were even louder: 80 decibels in a dimly lit wine bar at dinnertime; 86 decibels at a high-end food court during brunch; 90 decibels at a brewpub in a rehabbed fire station during Friday happy hour.

In the 1920s and 1930s, a banker named Pat Munroe in the small town of Quincy, Florida noticed that even during the depths of the Great Depression, otherwise impoverished people would spend their last nickel to buy a glass of Coca-Cola. With good returns on capital, and a once-in-a-century valuation so low that the business was trading for less than the cash in the bank, “Mr. Pat”, as he was called, encouraged everyone he knew to buy an ownership stake in the firm. He would even underwrite bank loans, backed by Coca-Cola stock, for his responsible depositors to encourage people to acquire equity.

For me, the Twitter turning point came when the company denied that it shadow-bans conservatives. It then explained what it does do, which corresponds precisely to the definition of shadow-banning. Like other Silicon Valley tech giants, Twitter is run by people who think it is their job to help left-wing Democrats win elections. There is no reason why conservatives should support Twitter.
Or anyone else, for that matter. Those of us who avoided Twitter ab initio are now entitled to blow a raspberry and say ‘Ha! Told you so!’, which I now do.

Kevin Williamson turns over a rock.
There is a peculiar paradox at the heart of modern progressivism: Progressives, especially Democratic candidates for office, claim to speak for the poor, the low-income, the marginalized, those born and raised without the benefits and (inevitable word) privilege of a Bush or a Romney or a McCain. But, at the same time, there is nothing they hate worse than somebody who comes from such a background entering public life: You’ll recall the sneering at Sarah Palin’s education — six years spread out over four colleges, none of them very good ones. There are many good criticisms to be made of Sarah Palin and the shtick into which she eventually sank, but she is a self-made woman who entered public service in one of the least glamorous and least lucrative ways, as mayor of a small city — as thankless a job as there is in elected office. She was ridiculed as a “snowbilly” and worse.
And this is especially true of those who move from Nowhereville to Noo Yawk precisely to leave that kind of background behind them, and then write articles about What’s Wrong With Kansas for the Times to let everyone know that they were never really from Flyover Country after all.

One of the biggest incongruities of the so-called ‘progressive’ movement is the number of areas in which they denounce actual progress and strive to turn back the clock, and the most obvious of these is with respect to food. We now have food crops that can beat most of the diseases and pests that have troubled farmers across the centuries, and we even have genetically-modified strains (like ‘golden rice’) that can compensate for food deficiencies in the diets of the poor — and yet ‘progressives’ want to go back to where we were a hundred years (or more) ago.
Perhaps be ought to be calling them ‘regressives’ instead.
