The largest diamonds ever mined on earth aren’t just set apart by their large size and luster, but by a unique origin story as well. They were born of metal, growing from patches of liquid iron and gas deep inside the Earth.
…
“Diamonds like [the Cullinan] have characteristics that aren’t quite the same as other kinds of diamonds. For years, geologists have wondered if maybe they formed in a slightly different way or if they came from a different part of the mantle. It’s been a lingering question that’s been really hard to tackle,” Smith says.

When it’s not pushing its left-wing agenda, National Geographic sometimes talks about geography.
A discovery made in a remote mountain village high in the Peruvian Andes suggests that the ancient Inca used accounting devices made of knotted, colored strings for more than accounting.
The devices, called khipus (pronounced kee-poos), used combinations of knots to represent numbers and were used to inventory stores of corn, beans, and other provisions. Spanish accounts from colonial times claim that Inca khipus also encoded history, biographies, and letters, but researchers have yet to decipher any non-numerical meaning in the cords and knots.
Now a pair of khipus protected by Andean elders since colonial times may offer fresh clues for understanding how more elaborate versions of the devices could have stored and relayed information.

University of Pittsburgh professor Shanara Reid-Brinkley held a lecture Tuesday where she stated that American democracy was built on “anti-blackness” and that black citizens cannot possibly be free in America.
“I think that we’re all screwed because white people are in charge,” Reid-Brinkley said, speaking at an event at the University of Wisconsin.
Well, then, when is she leaving? Surely she doesn’t want to stay in a country where she can’t be ‘free’?
They all bitch, bitch, bitch but they all stay.

In years past, hunters would begin their sporting careers in pursuit of small game. The tricks and tactics they learned were then put to use on bigger game such as deer and turkeys.
These days, however, the trend has been reversed. Most new hunters head straight for the deer stand or turkey blind and never learn the basic skills and strategies gained by long hours spent cruising the hardwoods in search of sharp-eyed bushytails.
The slackers.

The U.S. officer in charge of the crew that Iranian forces temporarily detained in January 2016 will be allowed to stay in the Navy, Foreign Policy reports.
Lt. David Nartker was previously recommended to be “separated” from the Navy because of his role in the international incident. Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps navy personnel detained Nartker and nine other sailors for nearly 24 hours after their riverine boats drifted into Iranian waters.
“His peers have looked at this, and they have decided that this doesn’t warrant separation, they want to keep him as a colleague,” Nartker’s lawyer told Foreign Policy.
If he’s smart he’ll look for another line of work. I wouldn’t want to work for this guy, nor would I want him in my crew.

Following up on reports that Ossoff doesn’t even live in the district, Camerota asks him: “Is it true you can’t vote for yourself?” After a painful silence, Ossoff talks around the question. He has been living with his girlfriend of 12 years, he explains, and he is supporting her as she completes her education.
Camerota asks: “So when are you going to marry her?” He’ll get back to her on that one.

A month after the election, Trevor Noah, the host of The Daily Show, published an op?ed in The New York Times that sought to position himself and his show as instruments of healing in a broken land. It was called “Let’s Not Be Divided, Divided People Are Easier to Rule,” and it zapped around progressives’ inboxes and Facebook feeds like a digital balm of Gilead. It was a reminder that we were not, in those fevered early weeks, being our best selves: “Instead of speaking in measured tones about what unites us, we are screaming at each other about what divides us.” How true that was, and—one might churlishly observe—what a sea change from Noah’s tone during the campaign, when he berated the Republican candidate for tweeting with “those fat little tiny fingers of yours” and for trying to think with “that stupid head,” and when he advised the candidate that “maybe you should look in the mirror, asshole.”

How did he find three whites in Fresno?
A gunman opened fire in downtown Fresno on Tuesday, killing at least three people.
The suspect, 39-year-old Kori Ali Muhammad, harbored hatred of white people, Fresno police chief Jerry Dyer said after the shooting, the Fresno Bee reported.
Muhammad’s three victims were white. Muhammad was also reportedly involved in the killing of a motel security guard in Fresno on Sunday.
While being taken into custody, Muhammad reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar.”

One notably bizarre, disorganized push to turn California into its own country is dead—at least for now. Its leader, Louis J. Marinelli, announced that he is canceling the petition and pulling up stakes. While he said he believed in the struggle for California’s independence “from the United States so we could build the kind of country that reflects our progressive values,” he has decided on a new path.
He’s decided he’d rather live in Russia, which is not exactly famous for its progressiveness.
But very much the picture of what ‘progressives’ want for America. Funny how reality always tells the truth in the end.

In the past, affirmative action for black schoolteachers, especially black male teachers, was usually justified with a Role Model rationale: It’s good for poor black children, especially black boys, to see that some blacks grow up to have respectable jobs where they show up to work on time. (Another reason offered more quietly was the hope that tough black guys could discipline black boys better.)
But lately, the conventional wisdom has been shifting away from that somewhat condescending Role Model rationale toward the remarkably hostile argument that blacks must be given even more special breaks when applying to be teachers because lots and lots of those Obama-voting, MLK-worshipping Nice White Lady schoolteachers are actually secret implicit racists, practically homicidal George Zimmermans.
I’m a racist, you’re a racist, he’s a racist, she’s a racist, wouldn’t you like to be a racist too?

That claim, in fact, is false — more “redshirts” died on-screen than any other crew type (10 gold-shirted, which are command personnel; eight blue-shirted, who are scientists; and 25 red-shirted, Grime said), but that calculation fails to take into account that there are far more redshirts on the ship to start with than any other crew type.
In other words, we’re looking at the probability that you are a redshirt if you die (58 percent) — what we want to know is the probability that you die if you’re a redshirt, Grime said.
I’ll bet you didn’t know that.

Do you know the real reason Dr. Dao was so brutally tackled and thrown off that United flight? It was all about white supremacy. I mean, what isn’t these days? That idea is from the New Republic. Yes, the cops “seemed” to be African-American, as the author concedes, so the white-versus-minority paradigm is a little off. Yes, this has happened before to many people with no discernible racial or gender pattern. Yes, there is an obvious alternative explanation: The seats from which passengers were forcibly removed were randomly assigned. New York published a similar piece, which argued that the incident was just another example of Trump’s border-and-immigration-enforcement policies toward suspected illegal immigrants of color. That no federal cops were involved and there is no actual evidence at all of police harassment of Asian-Americans is irrelevant — it’s all racism, all the time, everywhere in everything.
It’s easy to mock this reductionism, I know, but it reflects something a little deeper. Asian-Americans, like Jews, are indeed a problem for the “social-justice” brigade. I mean, how on earth have both ethnic groups done so well in such a profoundly racist society? How have bigoted white people allowed these minorities to do so well — even to the point of earning more, on average, than whites? Asian-Americans, for example, have been subject to some of the most brutal oppression, racial hatred, and open discrimination over the years. In the late 19th century, as most worked in hard labor, they were subject to lynchings and violence across the American West and laws that prohibited their employment. They were banned from immigrating to the U.S. in 1924. Japanese-American citizens were forced into internment camps during the Second World War, and subjected to hideous, racist propaganda after Pearl Harbor. Yet, today, Asian-Americans are among the most prosperous, well-educated, and successful ethnic groups in America. What gives? It couldn’t possibly be that they maintained solid two-parent family structures, had social networks that looked after one another, placed enormous emphasis on education and hard work, and thereby turned false, negative stereotypes into true, positive ones, could it? It couldn’t be that all whites are not racists or that the American dream still lives?

The history professor at California State University, Fresno who appeared to advocate for the death of President Donald Trump on Twitter has apologized profusely and taken a temporary leave of absence in an undisclosed location because he now fears for his personal safety.
(to the tune of “Maria” from West Side Story) Pro-jec-tion … you’ve got a disease called pro-jec-tion….
Maischak says he now deeply regrets composing and publishing the tweets.
Being scared shitless will do that to you.
“I ask forgiveness of those who felt threatened or offended by them,” Maischak wrote in a statement obtained by the Los Angeles Times. “It was never my intent to harm anyone, nor to encourage others to harm anyone.”
Calling for someone to be hanged – no, that’s not ‘to encourage others to harm anyone’. This guy needs to go back to school.
“I never expected them to be read by anyone but a close circle of acquaintances who would know to place them in their context,” Maischak also said in the Wednesday statement.
The context being a pathological hatred of people who don’t agree with him, and the close circle of acquaintances being like-minded sociopaths.
Maischak lamented that he has received a “flood of threats and hate-mail” for tweeting that the president and various racists should be murdered.
Welcome to our world, snowflake.
Fresno State University president Joseph Castro told the Times he welcomes “Maischak’s willingness to take accountability for the statements made on his Twitter account.” Mostly, Castro said, he wants to keep students safe.
Of course, if he had said that about Obama, he would immediately have been fired and a violent mob of ugly people would have surrounded his house. Note that President Castro (Freudian slip) is concerned for the students, not for the President.
Maischak, who holds a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, is teaching five sections of U.S. history this semester.
God help those poor kids.

Consider also that California’s approximately 39 million population equals the total combined population of the nation’s 22 smallest states. I can regale you with geographic trivia, but the closer you look, the harder it is to fathom why talks of breaking up California are not taken more seriously. California is too large in size and population to be governed fairly.

The alt-left are like the Rosie Ruiz of politics. Ruiz won the 1980 Boston Marathon and she did it in classic liberal style. I’ll let Time describe it: “Ruiz made winning a marathon look easy. And it was, using her signature strategy: Don’t run the whole thing.”
Liberals learned their lessons from Rosie. The way to win is to fix the race. Now they apply that strategy wherever they can — workplaces, academia and, of course, media. Their way to fix every race is to make every race about race.
Which is, really, the Left’s agenda in a nutshell.
Elections? Racist. Business? Racist. Dating? Racist. Picking up someone’s pencil and being polite to her? Yep, you got it, racist. Because somehow you expect people who are illegally in America to, you know, obey the law.
You know, of course that Ists are even worse than Phobes.
Race wars never go away for the left because they allow liberals to separate us into victim classes. If people don’t consider themselves victims, they don’t vote for the left. Expect to hear a lot about this as Nextflix just dropped the trailer for its stupid show, Dear White People yesterday.
Without victims, there can be no activists. (Oops. I meant ‘politically-woke people’.)

What became clear to me in this exchange is that the passive voice is itself unsuited for the lexical landscape of United’s email, which itself is part of a larger world we now find ourselves in, where corporate and government bureaucracies rely heavily on language to shape our perception. Munoz’s email relies heavily on the passive voice to evade culpability, but he also employs a host of other rhetorical moves that collude to put the blame on the man who was assaulted and carried out on a stretcher. Like a well-trained bureaucrat, Munoz used an array of syntactical choices in a predictable, quantifiable, and deliberate manner, and it’s time we recognize it for what it is.
Cue mandatory derogatory references to the Left’s boogeymen Nigel Farage and Donald Trump.
As I’ve written elsewhere, the thrust of these style guides falls back to a weird kind of masculine virility. The terms themselves—“passive” and “active”—rely heavily on received tropes of gendered norms, and for that reason alone we should be suspicious of them.
Just lookin’ for phobes, man, just lookin’ for phobes.
The term “officer-involved shooting” is a perfect example of bureaucratic speech: It invariably is paired with an active verb (“an officer-involved shooting occurred”) and yet the entire purpose of the construction is to imbue the scene with passivity. Police did not kill anyone; a shooting just occurred and it happened to involve officers. There is no actor in an officer-involved shooting, and not even any real actions. We don’t even technically know who was shot, only that an officer was somehow involved. An entire syntactical arrangement consisting of a subject (“police”), a verb (“shot”), and an object (“a civilian”) are transmuted into a noun (“shooting”) with a compound adjective (“officer-involved”) attached. It’s almost as if nothing took place at all.
This is even more obvious in the Politically Correct phrase used for partial-birth abortion: ‘intact dilation and extraction’, which could be something involving a car crash and the Jaws of Life.
