For many Europeans, the American mind is a hard thing to fathom. Considering the cultural influence the United States have exercised over the Mother Continent since 1918, and their political dominance since 1945, it is an important question. Nor are the Americans one is likely to meet in Europe much help—we are hardly representative of our countrymen. Less than 20% of Americans own passports, and a minority of that number actually use them beyond Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. We Americans abroad may be very pro- or anti-European, well-informed or ignorant, but we are not typical.
Even if we were, as a whole, Americans tend not to be very introspective. We may seek the self-affirmation of American Exceptionalism or the self-hatred of Wokery, but the calm pursuit of self-knowledge is not usually in our purview. This, of course, is not uncommon amongst either Imperial or Calvinist peoples; we are both—the latter in a strange, secularised sense peculiar to ourselves. So it is that probing the American mind presents unique challenges even to natives—let alone Europeans.
It has been observed that at the bottom of American differences from Europe lie two qualities: race and space. Certainly, the Indian and Black issues on the one hand, and the sheer immensity of our country on the other, make for a very great difference. So does the great divorce between rulers and ruled, despite the need of the former to corral the latter into election booths every so often. I often tell foreigners that if they want to love my country, they need to take a long road trip through it; if they wish to hate it, they need only to read the history of its foreign policy. The dissonance between the two experiences is astonishing.

That’s how it is now, the world we are allowed to see is largely fake, and as technology masters the art of deception, it will only get worse.
Of course, we can blame a lot of things for this, first on that list is AI. But now not just AI art, but AI video, AI news, AI novels, AI everything. We can also obviously blame marketing and advertising for much of this fakery that hits us in the face every day.
Commercial marketing has always done that, certainly since the days of Bernays, the psychological wizard-mind of brainwashing and propaganda. A relative of Sigmund Freud no less.

For many humans, plants might seem stationary and even a little dull. But green things actually move a lot. If you watch a timelapse video of a sunflower seedling poking up from the soil, for example, it doesn’t just shoot straight up. Instead, as the sunflower grows, its crown spins in circles, twists into corkscrews and, in general, wiggles around—albeit very slowly.
Now, researchers co-led by Orit Peleg at CU Boulder and Yasmine Meroz at Tel Aviv University have discovered one role for these chaotic movements, also known as “circumnutations.” In greenhouse experiments and computer simulations, the group showed that sunflowers take advantage of circumnutations to search the environment around them for patches of sunlight.

What were they thinking? How did they eat this bilge? Good questions, but you won’t find them answered here. This is a simple introduction to poorly photographed foodstuffs and horrid recipes. It’s a wonder anyone in the 40s, 50s and 60s gained any weight; it’s a miracle that people didn’t put down their issue of Life magazine with a slight queasy list to their gut, and decide to sup on a nice bowl of shredded wheat and nothing else. It wasn’t that the food was inedible; it was merely dull. Everything was geared for a timid palate fearful of spice. It wasn’t non- nutritious – no, between the limp boiled vegetables, fat-choked meat cylinders and pink-whipped-jello dessert, you were bound to find a few calories that would drag you into the next day. It’s that the pictures are so hideously unappealing.

Although Apple makes it sound like Californians will be able to ditch their physical driver’s licenses and state IDs in favor of digital versions in the Wallet app, California and the other states supporting digital IDs in Wallet require that you continue to carry your physical ID.
So what’s the point? I remember my father talking about World War II where one of his commanders wanted to destroy a bunch of obsolete and useless documents, and his superiors in the War Department would only let him do that if he made copies of them in triplicate.

This week, the Wall Street Journal published some good news for proponents of Social Security, the socialist program that President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law in 1935. The Journal reported that the Millennial generation — those whose age range is between 27 and 44 — have experienced a “dramatic turnaround” in finances. The Journal states:
The median household net worth of older millennials, born in the 1980s, rose to $130,000 in 2022 from $60,000 in 2019…. Median wealth more than quadrupled to $41,000 for Americans born in the 1990s, which includes the generation’s youngest members, born in 1996. In early 2024, millennials and older members of Gen Z had, on average and adjusting for inflation, about 25% more wealth than Gen Xers and baby boomers did at a similar age, according to a St. Louis Fed analysis.”
Why is that good news for proponents of Social Security? It assures them that there is more wealth that the IRS can confiscate to support and maybe even expand the program.

More high-income households have left California and New York than moved in, but some states saw the opposite.
Florida had the biggest net gain of high-earning households, according to a recent SmartAsset study. SmartAsset analyzed the latest available IRS data from the 2021-2022 tax year. Using $200,000 of adjusted gross income as a threshold, the study examined the number of high-income households moving into and out of each state to determine the net inflow.
Texas came in second in terms of net inflow, followed by North and South Carolina and Arizona.

According to police, the 21-year-old perpetrator got into an argument with a visitor and hit him as well as a security guard. The Algerian then fled the scene, but appeared in a courtyard of the asylum center where he punched and stabbed several residents.
The attack was treated by Berlin police as a “mass casualty event,” meaning a large deployment of law enforcement and paramedics, as well as a helicopter to transport the injured.
Two of the victims were admitted to hospital with stab wounds, one reportedly in life threatening condition, while another five were treated on an outpatient basis. Several of the injured are Moldovan.

The new guidelines were issued following an incident where a pregnant woman who presented as a man underwent a CT scan, the Telegraph reports. Radiology procedures such as X-rays and CT scans can be harmful to unborn babies.
The guidelines instruct radiology operators to ask all patients between the ages of 12 and 55 if they are pregnant before proceeding with the scans. They also include admonitions to staff to be sensitive to transgender, non-binary, and intersex patients. Patients are also required to fill out new forms asking about their gender at birth and their preferred pronouns.
However, radiographers have described incidents in which the new protocols made some men so angry they stormed out of appointments without getting their scans done. Women, too, have had strong reactions, with some crying because of the “invasive” fertility questions on the forms that ask them to explain why they could not be pregnant, forcing some to recall miscarriages or other incidents that have left them infertile. Previously, it was enough for women simply to state that they were not pregnant.

A Los Angeles County school district offers an ethnic studies course covering the “intersectionality” of “identity markers” such as race, gender, and sexual orientation.
“Ethnic Studies aims to educate students on social justice themes related to ethnicity, identity, and the historical element that is the common denominator, while providing students with a democratic toolkit intended to support student’s project-based learning needs,” according to a course overview obtained through a public records request by the Center for American Liberty and shared with The Daily Signal.
The class, offered to seniors at Clark Magnet High School in the Glendale Unified School District, encourages “social activism” by “building on the district’s social justice standards while incorporating the new history social science framework.”
California Assembly Bill 101 made ethnic studies a high school graduation requirement in 2021.

In normal years, which were not that long ago, students would look forward to returning to or entering college as freshmen. After violent anti-Israel and antisemitic demonstrations on some college campuses, many fear this semester might see a repeat of the prior ugliness.
This is how bad it has gotten. Police in Montgomery County, Maryland, are investigating after antisemitic and pro-Palestinian graffiti was discovered outside Bethesda Elementary School Sunday morning. An elementary school! Rather than condemning the incident, the pro-Hamas lobby group known as CAIR issued a statement that sounded like “what can you expect,” given Israel’s justifiable attempt to wipe out the terrorist group in Gaza.
Columbia University in New York, where some of the worst rioting occurred last semester, is reportedly considering granting arrest powers to campus police, hoping it will curb the demonstrations. That’s fine, but it’s not just about the arrests, most of which have resulted in quick releases, it’s about prosecuting lawbreakers. In liberal New York that has become nearly impossible to do thanks to District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who often releases and fails to prosecute even violent offenders.

This week, alleged comedian Stephen Colbert had on CNN’s Kaitlan Collins to discuss the 2024 presidential election. In the middle of the interview, Colbert began to ask Collins a question, in all sincerity: “I know you guys are objective over (at CNN), you just report the news as it is.” Colbert, presumably, expected his audience — all Kamala Harris fans, since Colbert is the most left-leaning host on late night television — to nod along. Instead, they laughed.
They laughed because everyone in America knows, at this point, that the media have become stenographers for the Democratic Party.

A Russian court has sentenced a Russian-American woman to 12 years in prison for treason after she made a donation of just over $50 to a US-based charity supporting Ukraine.
Ksenia Karelina, 33, had pleaded guilty to the charges. She was detained in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg earlier this year while visiting her grandparents.
The verdict was announced Thursday after a closed-doors trial at Sverdlovsk regional court that ended last week. Investigators said Karelina had sent money to purchase equipment and ammunition for the Ukrainian army, RIA Novosti reported.

The Beehome is a solar-powered, converted container that brings together robotics, artificial intelligence, imaging, a software platform, and a mobile application to monitor and care for honeybees around the clock. The device can house up to 24 bee colonies and automatically controls for climate and humidity conditions, detects and eliminates pests and parasites, identifies when a colony is preparing to swarm, sends alerts when human intervention is needed, and even harvests the honey the bees produce.
“The Beehome works with 24 colonies, 12 on each side. And in the center, there’s a robotic system that moves and monitors [the colonies] 24/7 using computer vision, machine learning and neural networks. It dispenses food, water, medicine if there is a disease or pest, it knows if it’s too hot or cold — the robot can treat all of this,” Safra said.
Controlling and monitoring all these conditions in real-time ensures that yields improve, pollination occurs more efficiently, and honeybee populations are protected, he explained.
Reminds me of the classic George Carlin routine:

Save the snails!
Save the trees!
Save the bees….

Kamala Harris’ fabulous career has of course benefited extraordinarily from her being roughly one-quarter black, but few have offered much of an opinion on her being one-half Tamil Brahmin (besides her fellow South Asians, of course), other than it reduces her despised white component.
And yet, the rise of South Asians to positions of immense power across the Anglosphere is one of the big stories of the 21st century.
But few Americans have much of an opinion on Kamala’s Indianness, because Americans don’t traditionally think much about South Asians, who have minimal history in this country.

Nonprofit leaders devoted to DEI led a discussion on Tuesday about how to continue making race-based decisions while staying “under the radar” and avoiding anti-discrimination lawsuits, even after the 2023 Supreme Court ruling outlawed affirmative action.
Hosted by Fluxx, a grants management platform whose clients include the left-wing Ford and MacArthur foundations, the webinar was advertised as a discussion of “recent efforts to stymie diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the United States.”
Representatives from the left-wing philanthropies Hello Alice and the Kresge Foundation instructed participants how to dodge discrimination lawsuits best—not by adhering to the law but rather, according to Hello Alice grants director LaToya Ratlieff, by making “little tweaks in the language” on websites and marketing materials. By way of example, she said that instead of describing a grant “as only open to black entrepreneurs,” Hello Alice now indicates that “preference will be given to black entrepreneurs.”

As reported by the Daily Caller, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has filed over 44,000 deportation cases in Massachusetts in the first nine months of fiscal year 2024. If new cases continue at this pace, then the end of the fiscal year could see as many as 59,000 deportation cases. The previous record was 54,000 in fiscal year 2023, which previously set the record for the highest number of cases in about 25 years.
Despite previously voicing her support for open borders and vowing to keep the state a “sanctuary” for illegals, Governor Maura Healey (D-Mass.) declared in July that the state would limit the length of time that an illegal could stay at state-run overflow shelters, bringing it down to just five days per illegal.
This rule was implemented at all four overflow shelters, located in Cambridge, Chelsea, Lexington, and Norfolk. These shelters previously allowed illegals to stay for up to 30 days, with the option to simply re-apply for another 30 days indefinitely.

Researchers assessed many thousands of different molecules in people from age 25 to 75, as well as their microbiomes—the bacteria, viruses and fungi that live inside us and on our skin—and found that the abundance of most molecules and microbes do not shift in a gradual, chronological fashion. Rather, we undergo two periods of rapid change during our life span, averaging around age 44 and age 60. A paper describing these findings appears in Nature Aging.
“We’re not just changing gradually over time; there are some really dramatic changes,” said Michael Snyder, Ph.D., chair of genetics and the study’s senior author. “It turns out the mid-40s is a time of dramatic change, as is the early 60s. And that’s true no matter what class of molecules you look at.”
Xiaotao Shen, Ph.D., a former Stanford Medicine postdoctoral scholar, was the first author of the study. Shen is now an assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University Singapore.

As of June, the Dallas Area not-so-Rapid Transit (DART) was carrying 80 percent of pre-pandemic riders, a little more than the national average of 75 percent. The decrease in ridership has minimal effect on its budget, since in 2019 fares covered less than 12 percent of operating costs. Still, officials of several cities in the region whose taxpayers are supporting DART are beginning to wonder why they are spending so much money and getting so little.
DART is basically a jobs program for Dallas county black people.
DART is primarily funded out of a 1 percent sales tax levied on residents of 13 cities served by the agency. Since early July, the city councils of six of those cities have voted to reduce the sales tax going to DART by 25 percent, and the city councils of Dallas and at least one other city are considering similar resolutions. The tax is levied by DART, not the cities, so the votes are more symbolic of general dissatisfaction with how DART is run. To actually reduce the tax, the DART board would have to put a measure on the ballot and residents of each of the 13 cities would decide.
The councillors who voted to reduce DART subsidies are “not against public transportation,” says the mayor of one of those cities. Instead, they want ” efficient system that does not over-rely on taxpayer dollars to service approximately 4% of individuals in DFW.”
