I Left England Because of Socialized Medicine. My Life Depended On It.

21st November 2019

Read it.

As an epileptic, I needed a steady supply of anti-seizure drugs and visits to the doctor about every three months to make sure everything was working as it should. I also needed a doctor to be available within a week’s time if necessary.

I asked if there was anything I could do to expedite the waiting process. In response, all I got was: “I’ll call my colleague and see if she could maybe squeeze you in maybe three to four months from now.”

Disheartened by the news, I knew staying in the U.K. was out of the question. I had to return to the U.S. in order to keep accessing the routine medical care that had saved my life so many years before.

Another Trip Around the Sun

21st November 2019

ZMan gets an annual physical.

he funny thing about the problems of the American health care system is that this is the one area where libertarians could apply their arguments. They don’t, of course, as that would take time away from selling weed and porn to grade school kids, but there is a libertarian case to be made about health care. In fact, we have a libertarian health care system operating in the United States. It is world class and provides amazing results for the patients. It is called veterinary medicine.

In America, our pets get better health care than most humans on earth. The cost, compared to any system in the West, is trivial. The service is phenomenal, as there are lots of suppliers competing for customers. In my area, I have one doctor and five veterinary clinics. I don’t need permission to make an appointment and I am not required to pay a monthly fee for services I’ll never use. It is a great example of how to operate a market-based health care system that no one ever mentions.

Here’s One Reason the U.S. Military Can’t Fix Its Own Equipment

21st November 2019

Read it.

A few years ago, I was standing in a South Korean field, knee deep in mud, incredulously asking one of my maintenance Marines to tell me again why he couldn’t fix a broken generator. We needed the generator to support training with the United States Army and South Korean military, and I was generally unaccustomed to hearing anyone in the Marine Corps give excuses for not effectively getting a job done. I was stunned when his frustrated reply was, “Because of the warranty, ma’am.”

At the time, I hadn’t heard of “right-to-repair” and didn’t know that a civilian concept could affect my job in the military. The idea behind right-to-repair is that you (or a third-party you choose) should be able to repair something you own, instead of being forced to rely on the company that originally sold it. This could involve not repairing something (like an iPhone) because doing so would void a warranty; repairs which require specialized tools, diagnostic equipment, data or schematics not reasonably available to consumers; or products that are deliberately designed to prevent an end user from fixing them.

I have my doubts. Political ideology is the most reality-resistant thing in the universe.

Malpractice: CBS Fails to Note Party ID of Corrupt Democrat Mayor as ABC, NBC Ignore

21st November 2019

Read  it.

On Wednesday, former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh (D) was indicted on 11 counts of fraud and tax invasion concerning her Healthy Holly book series that had forced her out of office on May 2. If convicted on all counts, she could face 175 years in jail. And while ABC’s World News Tonight and NBC Nightly News didn’t believe it was worth informing the public about, the CBS Evening News covered it with a one-minute-and-44-second report, but left out the key fact that she was a Democrat.

When I saw that a mayor was under indictment I just assumed she was a Democrat.

Australian Scientists Believe They Have Invented a Way to Recycle All Types of Plastic

21st November 2019

Read it.

Len Humphreys and Sydney University professor Thomas Maschmeyer told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Tuesday that the patented device they developed can process plastics that currently cannot be recycled.

The so-called Catalytic Hydrothermal Reactor (Cat-HTR) has the ability to turn disposed plastic into fuel or remade new plastic through a process of chemical recycling that changes the plastics at a molecular level and then turns them back into oil, Humphreys told ABC.

OOPS: Media Hype Harsh UN Migrant-Kids Study, Delete Since UN Data’s From Obama Era

20th November 2019

Read it.

This would be funny, if it wasn’t just so sad. Several media outlets had their credibility put to the test this week (and shocker, failed miserably) after a report from the United Nations out Monday left out a pretty significant detail. The report appeared to condemn President Trump over the “inhuman” border policy, calling the U.S. out for having the “world’s highest rate of children in detention [centers].” The media rushed to share the report as more bad news for Trump. However they were singing a very different tune when the UN report’s author later clarified that his data was from 2015, when President Obama was in office.

Unsurprisingly, a number of outlets rushed to salvage their reports upon finding this out. But instead of keeping the reports up with a correction for the dates, they scrubbed their ENTIRE stories.

Oops indeed. I guess anything that impugns The Magic Negro goes down the Memory Hole.

Look, Latin Is Not Useless, Neither Is It Dead

19th November 2019

Read it.

For many people, Latin is useless. I won’t enter into a discussion on the meaning of “utility,” a concept with variations and stratifications that are centuries in the making, and which itself merits an entire book. What I will say here, however, is that those “many people”—civilians, politicians, professionals in every field—have a sadly (and dangerously) limited idea of education and human development. What their focus on “utility” betrays is the belief that, in the end, knowledge amounts to know-how, that thought should be immediately adapted toward a practical aim. But if that were the case, knowledge would hardly be useful: we’d have surgeons, plumbers, and not much else, given that machines are growing more and more responsible for satisfying our primary needs. Eventually the surgeon or plumber will disappear too. And if such is the fate of knowledge, that it be surrendered to machines—or, as we put it more often these days, to technology—what exactly will there be for humans to know? Of course, we’ll have to learn how to build the machines and keep them functioning, and to dispose of the remains when they become obsolete, and to procure the materials necessary to build new machines.
