Thomas Hargrove is a homicide archivist. For the past seven years, he has been collecting municipal records of murders, and he now has the largest catalogue of killings in the country—751,785 murders carried out since 1976, which is roughly twenty-seven thousand more than appear in F.B.I. files. States are supposed to report murders to the Department of Justice, but some report inaccurately, or fail to report altogether, and Hargrove has sued some of these states to obtain their records. Using computer code he wrote, he searches his archive for statistical anomalies among the more ordinary murders resulting from lovers’ triangles, gang fights, robberies, or brawls. Each year, about five thousand people kill someone and don’t get caught, and a percentage of these men and women have undoubtedly killed more than once. Hargrove intends to find them with his code, which he sometimes calls a serial-killer detector.
…
Hargrove is sixty-one. He is tall and slender, with a white beard and a skeptical regard. He lives with his wife and son in Alexandria, Virginia, and walks eight miles a day, to Mount Vernon or along the Potomac, while listening to recordings of books—usually mystery novels. He was born in Manhattan, but his parents moved to Yorktown, in Westchester County, when he was a boy. “I lived near Riverside Drive until I was four,” he said. “Then one day I showed my mom what I learned on the playground, which is that you can make a switchblade out of Popsicle sticks, and next thing I knew I was living in Yorktown.”

Warren responded to the President, saying “It is deeply unfortunate that the president of the United States cannot even make it through a ceremony honoring these heroes without having to throw out a racial slur.”
I guess, then, that referring to somebody as Martin Luther King would be regarded by Senator Fauxcahontas as a ‘racial slur’.
At Monday’s White House press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders was asked by a reporter why Trump felt the need to say something that is “offensive to many people ” at the ceremony. Sanders bluntly responded, “I think what most people find offensive is Senator Warren lying about her heritage to advance her career.”
Oh, not so much — most people expect Democrats to lie.

King County Superior Court Judge John Ruhl, in a summary judgement, sided with many angry city residents who contended the local income tax violated state law. Ruhl rejected a wide range of arguments cooked up by Seattle to save its legally dubious levy.
…
Seattle’s progressive income tax, passed unanimously by the City Council in June, levied a 2.25 percent rate on individual incomes above $240,000 or $500,000 for joint filers.
The tax proved immediately and wildly unpopular. Three State Supreme Court decisions have called the progressive income tax a violation of Washington’s state constitution. A 1984 state law reinforced those rulings, flatly saying “a county, city, or city-county shall not levy a tax on net income.”
Apparently the Left Coast is still part of America.
Getting around the plain text of the law required some creativity. The council defended its ordinance as a tax on “total income”—as defined on various IRS tax forms. Ruhl decided the IRS’s “total income” figure incorporates various deductions and write-offs, making it in fact a measure of “net income.”
Seattle also tried to argue that their ordinance—whose own text describes itself as “imposing an income tax”—was not an income tax at all, but rather an excise tax. The distinction is that an excise tax is levied “on a taxpayer for voluntarily exercising a certain right or privilege.”
Living and earning a wage, according to Seattle’s legal team, is a privilege that residents choose to exercise, and thus can be taxed.
The proglodyte mind laid bare.

Last night CBS Minnesota broadcast excerpts of the interview Al Franken gave to anchor/reporter Esme Murphy at his daughter’s home in Washington, where he rode out the storm over the long Thanksgiving weekend during which he issued laughable and inconsistent statements on his misconduct. CBS Minnesota has posted the broadcast report (video below, about six minutes) and a companion summary here. It has also posted the entire 33-minute interview. If you have been following this story, the whole thing is must viewing; I have posted it at the bottom. My comments below are based on the full interview.

Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi was actually grilled by moderator Chuck Todd on numerous sexual harassment allegations made against Senator Al Franken and Congressman John Conyers. She had clearly grown accustomed to the usual softball treatment she has received on the network and complained about not being given enough time to bash Republicans.
After spending the exclusive interview pressing Pelosi on the accusations against her liberal colleagues and even pointing out her past defense of Bill Clinton, Todd attempted to wrap up the segment: “Leader Pelosi, unfortunately for time, I’ve got to end it there. I appreciate you coming on.” The House Minority Leader was outraged: “You mean we’re not even going to talk about taxes?”

However, the message is very similar to messages posted by purported white student unions at other schools such as Pennsylvania State University, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of California, Berkeley, reported The Cavalier Daily. I wrote here about an op-ed by professors Amy Wax and Larry Alexander in which the authors praised America’s 1950s “bourgeois culture.” Though acknowledging the existence of “racial discrimination, limited sex roles, and pockets of anti-Semitism” in that culture, they insisted that the modern “loss of bourgeois habits has seriously impeded the progress of disadvantaged groups.”
…
Predictably, Wax and Alexander were instantly accused of racism by what Robert Woodson describes as “the growing army of angry academics who police the prevailing narrative of black victimhood.” Woodson observes that, according to this narrative “black progress is determined not by personal choices and individual behavior, but by white supremacy, America’s history of slavery and discrimination, and institutional racism.” Thus, “touting ‘bourgeois values’ is interpreted as an offense against authentic black culture.”

What really jumped out at me reading up on the Tunnel of Oppression phenomenon was that it seems to appeal most to the most fly-overish colleges imaginable: Boise State, Wichita State, Texas Tech, Indiana, Southern Illinois, Northern Illinois, Western Illinois, and so forth.
You might think that the Tunnel of Oppression would appeal to coastal elitists, but I can’t find any evidence that Harvard, Yale, or Princeton have ever touched the Tunnel of Oppression with a ten-foot pole.
…
Similarly, the Tunnel of Oppression Test can distinguish Directional State Universities from the more prestigious Flagship Universities. The Tunnel of Oppresion was featured at the U. of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, but not at the U. of Wisconsin-Madison. It was at the Texas State (which What Would Tyler Durden Do suggested is not an actual college but merely a made-up university to play against in the Big Game in football movies), but not at the U. of Texas-Austin. Washington State in Pullman on the Idaho border is a stronghold of the Tunnel of Oppression, but not the U. of Washington in fashionable Seattle.

Current Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai memorably told Reason that “net neutrality” rules were “a solution that won’t work to a problem that doesn’t exist.”
Yet in 2015, despite a blessed lack of throttling of specific traffic streams, blocking of websites, and other feared behavior by internet service providers (ISPs) and mobile carriers, the FCC issued net neutrality rulesthat gave the federal government the right to punish business practices under Title II regulations designed for the old state-enabled Bell telephone monopoly.
Now that Pai, who became chairman earlier this year, has announced an FCC vote to repeal the Obama-era regulations, he is being pilloried by progressives, liberals, Democrats, and web giants ranging from Google to Netflix to Amazon to Facebook, often in the name of protecting an “open internet” that would let little companies and startups flourish like in the good old days before Google, Netflix, Amazon, and Facebook dominated everything. Even the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which back in 2009 called FCC attempts to claim jurisdiction over the internet a “Trojan Horse” for government control, is squarely against the repeal.
The Usual Suspects, of course, consider it the End Of The World and reacted accordingly:
Pai is also being targeted by net neutrality activists, who have posted signs naming his children by his house and reportedly ordered pizzas as a nuisance.
This is the sort of bullying that the proglodyte fringe always indulge themselves in because they always feel justified in standing in the way of Hitler or whatever.
As a general rule, the side of a question that mobilizes ugly people marching in the streets and carrying ugly signs can be presumed to be wrong. This works 90% of the time.

An eco-terrorist responsible for sabotaging an oil pipeline in North Dakota suggested Saturday that shutting down the multi-billion dollar line was necessary to defuse the ticking time bomb of man-made global warming.
Temporarily taking offline a pair of pipelines in Minnesota earlier this year was part of an effort to save the world from fossil fuels, Seattle activist and poet Emily Johnston wrote in an editorial for The Guardian. A judge is allowing her to use a “necessity defense” to justify her actions last year against the Enbridge pipeline.
This country is crawling with people who have fully internalized the plethora of OH MY GOD WE’RE GONNA DIE scenarios pushed by the proglodyte fringe and who therefore feel fully justified in committing any conceivable atrocity because they’re somehow preventing Hitler or equivalent.

In a provocative new book, Against the Grain, Scott now challenges us to rethink legends about the state and its origins. Populations ruled by states tell stories about their emergence into civilization, stories that cast the non-state peoples around them as primitives and barbarians. These stories are familiar from the era of European imperialism and from early modern philosophers like Locke and Rousseau, but they’re common to state-governed populations around the world and throughout history. Scott calls them into deep doubt.
I have a copy of Against the Grain and have worked about half-way through it. It is well worth reading.

Vivian Yee of the New York Times has written an account of immigration enforcement under the Trump administration in Atlanta, a non-sanctuary city. Yee reports that the regional ICE office in Atlanta made nearly 80 percent more arrests in the first half of this year than it did in the same period last year, the largest increase of any field office in the country.
It has done so with cooperation from local sheriffs and the police, who are working with federal agents to identify and detain immigrants. Yee correctly calls this “the model of cooperation that the Trump administration is rapidly trying to expand throughout the country.”
But we have to remember that Trump has accomplished ABSOLUTELY NOTHING during his first year in office.

(And who has been more of a paragon over the years of bourgeois respectability and fulfilled potential than Sly Stone?) But even the healing balm of Diversity can’t keep some Deplorable-Americans in Vallejo from the crime of Noticing. First, the basics. During my eight years on the Senate staff, sex was a currency for renting rungs on ladders to power. Uninvolved and with a hygroscopic shoulder, I listened to accounts of the trade, in which some one-third of senators, male senior staff, and corresponding numbers of females seemed to be involved. I write “trade,” because not once did I hear of anyone forcing his attention. Given what seemed an endless supply of the willing, anyone who might feel compelled to do that would have been a loser otherwise unfit for survival in that demanding environment.
