Things are going smashingly well in Londonistan.
The City of London has the highest murder rate in the land. While the authorities launch investigations into pork being left at a mosque or a hijab supposedly being torn off, crime continues to rise.
Gun control has worked so wonderfully well that gun crime in London rose 42%. When gun control advocates insist that we should be more like the UK, London’s 2,544 gun crime offenses probably aren’t what they have in mind.
But gun control does work in London after a fashion. Those gang members who can’t lay their hand on a firearm must make do with a sharp blade. Knife crimes in London rose 24% to 12,074 recorded offences. 60 people were stabbed to death last year.
Why? Here’s a hint from the Metropolitan Police’s assistant commissioner. “There are complex social reasons why more young people are carrying knives and this cannot be solved by the police alone.”
Those complex social reasons would seem to involve stabbing other people. But like Islamic terrorism, stabbings in London are one of those things that can’t be solved by the police. Unlike people saying mean things about Muslims on Facebook and Twitter which the Met cops are well equipped to solve.

Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to cheer on Communists and Nazis punching each other in major American cities while civil society disintegrates around them.
…
The left killed civil rights and replaced it with black nationalism. The racial supremacism of black nationalism that killed those officers is everywhere. Ta-Nehisi Coates and Ibram X. Kendi are lionized as brilliant thinkers instead of hateful racists, Amazon has ordered a black nationalist secessionist fantasy from Aaron McGruder and Showtime aired ‘Guerilla,’ a miniseries glamorizing Black Panther terrorism.
But racism is a two-way street. So is violence. Extremists feed into each other.
So where does that leave us?
You can’t legitimize one form of racism without legitimizing all of them. The media may advance this hypocritical position. Obama used the shameful “reverse racism” euphemism that distinguishes between black and white racism. But propaganda and spin don’t change the physics of human nature.
Either all racism is bad. Or all racism is acceptable.
Charlottesville is what happens when you normalize racism and street violence. Every normalization of extremism equally normalizes the extremism of the opposite side.
‘Mommeee! Johnny hit me back!’
If Democrats really want to stop the rise of Neo-Nazi violence, there’s a very easy way. Stop normalizing black nationalism and the Alt-Left. End the racist witch hunts for white privilege. Make it clear that street violence is unacceptable and that racism is bad no matter who it comes from. Allow people you disagree with to express their views without trying to destroy their lives.
But that’s the opposite of what the Dems will do. They don’t want fewer Neo-Nazis; they want more of them. They don’t want fewer attacks like Charlottesville and Charleston. They want more of them.
With the DemLegHump Media urging them on.
When you spend enough time crying wolf, eventually a real wolf appears. A real wolf showed up in Charlottesville.
The left spent eight years dismantling any meaningful definition of racism for political reasons. The practical effect of their actions was to eliminate social sanctions for actual racists.
And the real racists were happy to take advantage of the new climate.
When the left insists that everyone with white skin is part of white supremacy, that Shakespeare, Beethoven and all of Western civilization embody white supremacy, it’s echoing the actual talking points of white supremacy.
If you tell all Obama critics and Trump supporters that they’re racists often enough, some will decide that maybe they are racists.
If you tell a student who objects to racially segregated areas on campus that she is a white supremacist, she will be more likely to become one.
When you marginalize everyone to the right of you, some of the marginalized will accept the definition.
Be careful what you complain about; you just might get it.

Ta-Nehisi Coates, the race-obsessed National Correspondent for The Atlantic, gave an interview on August 15 to taxpayer-subsidized Pacifica Radio’s Democracy Now, where he offered his opinion on Trump, racism (of course), Charlottesville, and white supremacy, as a plug for his new book, We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy. And, while Republicans of course are the biggest culprits for allowing racism to continue, Coates stated that even former President Obama was in some way responsible.
I guess Obama wasn’t really Black Enough to suit the new clerisy.

In its ongoing push into retail, Amazon today announced the opening of five “Instant Pickup” locations in the United States, allowing Prime subscribers to choose from a selection of “daily essentials” that are made available for pick up in two minutes or less (via Reuters). The essential items include snacks, drinks, electronics, and Amazon’s own devices.
The Instant Pickup process begins with Prime and Prime Student users visiting Amazon’s iOS or Android app to browse through hundreds of essential and daily care items. Users can then place an order, decide on an Instant Pickup location, and then go to the retail store to pick it up from a self-service locker.
On the employee side of things, when users place an order someone at the Instant Pickup store gathers the items in a back room, and then places them within one of the numbered lockers. After customers place their order, they’re given the number to the locker and a barcode to access its contents at the Instant Pickup store.

Lately, Salcedo says, there’s another innovation facilitated by the military that has been making its way to the rest of us: cooking food by applying high pressure, instead of heat. Under high pressure, microorganisms burst, and the food is sterilised, a process that today yields preservative-free lunch meats, packaged guacamole that stays green under its wrapper, and fresh-tasting bottled juices (the process is sometimes called cold pasteurisation).

On Quilette last week, four scientists across the fields of psychology and neuroscience largely agreed with Damore’s findings. Neuroscientist Debra Soh wrote in to say that she “didn’t find the memo offensive or sexist in the least.”

The Internal Revenue Service rehired 213 employees who ducked taxes, falsified documents, were convicted of theft, or made unauthorized use of taxpayer data, an inspector general’s report says.
The Office of Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, which also first discovered the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups in 2013, examined the agency’s hiring from January 2015 through March 2016.
For these 15 months, the IRS official in charge was Commissioner John Koskinen, an appointee of President Barack Obama.
House Republicans for months sought to impeach Koskinen for obstructing a congressional probe into the agency’s targeting of the applications for tax-exempt status made by nonprofit tea party and conservative groups.

In this morning’s story on what went down in Charlottesville on Saturday, Stolberg turns to ministerial trainee Brittany Caine-Conley, “a protester at the alt-right rally” (as Stolberg puts it): “There was no police presence. We were watching people punch each other; people were bleeding all the while police were inside of barricades at the park, watching. It was essentially just brawling on the street and community members trying to protect each other.”
The linked article reproduces a tweet from a NYT reporter that she saw antifa thugs beating on marchers that were being led out of the park.
The Antifa counter-protesters started this riot, and the government of Charlottesville were accomplices.

“No Free Speech for Fascists!” It’s a motto you see on pre-printed signs at protests, including at yesterday’s rallies in reaction to the violence and death in Charlottesville, Virginia, this weekend. Paired with a flood of invective against the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for the group’s support of Unite the Right’s right to stage a rally at the city’s statue of Robert E. Lee in the first place, they make for a troubling trend.
Perhaps I ought to have a category ‘Whose turn is it to be the fascist?’

The brief clip below is an excerpt from a longer RT video that someone has modified by steadying it as much as possible and zooming in. In it you’ll see the car driven yesterday by James Fields, just before it ran into a crowd of counter-protesters in Charlottesville. The cameraman is on the east sidewalk of 4th Street, looking south towards Water Street. The point of view is just south of the pedestrian area of the Downtown Mall, as indicated by the newspaper boxes that briefly come into view on the left. The car that Mr. Fields’ car eventually rammed is farther down, hidden by the clot of pedestrians.
Watch closely as a counter-protester holding a bat swings it with both arms against the back of Mr. Fields’ Dodge.
‘Counter-protester’, of course, being a euphemism for ‘antifa rioter’.
The camera’s view of the car is foreshortened by distance and the effect of the zoom. However, it is apparent that the car was NOT traveling at a high rate of speed prior to being hit by the bat. The driver seemed to be proceeding with caution, as would be appropriate when driving on a street packed with rowdy pedestrians.
If you’ve seen any of the videos showing the impact of Mr. Fields’ Dodge with the back of the second car, you know how fast he was traveling when he ripped through that crowd. At some point after his car was hit with the bat, he must have floored it.
You won’t see any of that in the DemLegHump Media, of course.
It’s all about the Narrative, Larry. How long before some proglodyte web site comes up with a photoshop of Trump driving the crowd car?

The application process for schools, fellowships, and jobs always came with a ritual: a person who had a role in choosing me—an admissions officer, an interviewer—would mention in his congratulations that I was “different” from the other Asians. When I won a scholarship that paid for part of my education, a selection panelist told me that I got it because I had moving qualities of heart and originality that Asian applicants generally lacked. Asian applicants were all so alike, and I stood out. In truth, I wasn’t much different from other Asians I knew. I was shy and reticent, played a musical instrument, spent summers drilling math, and had strict parents to whom I was dutiful. But I got the message: to be allowed through a narrow door, an Asian should cultivate not just a sense of individuality but also ways to project “Not like other Asians!”
For Fashionable Victim purposes, Asians have Honorary Whiteness.

From commenter Eagle Eye:
What is the distribution of Hindu castes among Google employees?
Is Pichai himself an “Untouchable”?
What percentage of Google staff are Shudra (lowest caste)? How many “Googlers” come from “Scheduled Castes” or “Scheduled Tribes” (i.e. underclass groups)?
Do higher-caste Indian women at Google date lower-caste men?
Do Untouchables at Google mix smoothly with senior management?
Does anyone keep track of caste? Why not? Are there lists secretly passed around to keep out caste impostors? (“She is actually only an X from Y state.”)
What about Korean baekjeong at Google?
Let’s have a data-driven conversation with Pich
It is striking how there is virtually zero interest in America in the topic of caste discrimination, even as the number of Indians in important places grows. It suggests, once more, that Current Year obsessions aren’t really about Battling Bigotry in general, but instead are about Getting Whitey in particular.

So I find the fact that women and some minorities, as a whole, are underrepresented among Silicon Valley firms to be both predictable and not particularly alarming. When I started my career in public accounting nearly 40 years ago there were very few women in the CPA profession. In my first “class” at Deloitte in Boston, of the thirty-six or so new accountants hired, more than a third were women. Now some university accounting programs are dominated by women and these women often outperform their male counterparts. In this very demanding of professions, 19% of Deloitte’s partner level employees are now women. In fact, Deloitte’s CEO is a woman.
Engineering and tech, like public accounting, have not, historically, been careers pursued by women for a host of reasons that are difficult to ascertain. Certainly, at least in the last forty years that I have been in the workplace, young women have not been discouraged or barred entry into either profession for prejudicial reasons. They’ve been welcomed and recruited. But both professions involve objective, difficult, demanding, and quantitative undergraduate study, an emersion in their own esoteric language and structure. They are both, in a word, nerdy. And career-wise, they are difficult and hyper-competitive. Success, in either profession, is hardly assured. Tech firms blossom and die with amazing frequency; today’s stock grants or options are often tomorrow’s wallpaper. And the accounting profession, aside from being an incredible grind, is built around the notion that about 1/3 of its staff will either leave or be counselled out each and every year. Extrapolate that over time and you can see why only one in fifty or more staffers hired eventually make it to partnership.
I have three daughters, all extremely bright and hardworking. Each of them laughed at me when I suggested a career in engineering or accounting. I know that this is anecdotal, but I don’t think it is unusual. Of those twenty or so children among our inner circles of friends, I can count three who pursued engineering as undergraduates, two of those female. In all three cases, their parents are in the tech world (two engineers and one a PhD physicist.) There several other parents who are tech engineers whose children are not pursuing tech degrees. Of those three students who chose undergraduate engineering, none is pursuing an aspect of engineering that will attract a Silicon Valley career. I should note, however, that two young women are pursuing STEM careers, both in PhD programs in medical science, one is my middle daughter and the other is the daughter of an electrical engineer.

I am writing about Google’s firing of Damore for daring to speak the truth because it is of a piece with the left’s political modus operandi:
- Fixate on an objective, regardless of its lack of feasibility (e.g. proportional representation of various demographic groups — but not Asians or Jews — in STEM fields), lack validity (e.g., the demonstrated inaccuracy of climate models that lean heavily on the effects of atmospheric CO2); or consequences (e.g., high failure rates among under-qualified “minorities”, lower standards that affect the quality of output and even endanger lives, the futile use of expensive “renewable” energy sources in place of carbon-based fuels).
- Insist that attainment of the objective will advance liberty, equality, fraternity, or prosperity.
- Demand punishment for those who question the objective, thereby suppressing liberty; fostering false equality; engendering resentments that undermine fraternity; and diminishing prosperity.
What happened to James Damore is what happens where leftists control the machinery of the state. (Be mindful that Hitler was a leftist, as I explain and document in “Leftism“.)

Political Correctness that is too much even for David Brooks. How weird is that?
There are many actors in the whole Google/diversity drama, but I’d say the one who’s behaved the worst is the C.E.O., Sundar Pichai.
A high bar.
What we have is a legitimate tension. Damore is describing a truth on one level; his sensible critics are describing a different truth, one that exists on another level. He is championing scientific research; they are championing gender equality. It takes a little subtlety to harmonize these strands, but it’s doable.
Everybody gets his own truth and a participation trophy. That’s the Social Justice Warrior way.
Of course subtlety is in hibernation in modern America. The third player in the drama is Google’s diversity officer, Danielle Brown. She didn’t wrestle with any of the evidence behind Damore’s memo. She just wrote his views “advanced incorrect assumptions about gender.” This is ideology obliterating reason.
Let’s put her in the cell next to Pichai. Can’t discriminate on the basis of sex, you know.
I would refuse to work for any company that had a ‘diversity officer’.
The mob that hounded Damore was like the mobs we’ve seen on a lot of college campuses. We all have our theories about why these moral crazes are suddenly so common. I’d say that radical uncertainty about morality, meaning and life in general is producing intense anxiety. Some people embrace moral absolutism in a desperate effort to find solid ground. They feel a rare and comforting sense of moral certainty when they are purging an evil person who has violated one of their sacred taboos.
Proglodyte Puritanism is all about burning heretics, not about anything productive.
Regardless which weakness applies, this episode suggests he should seek a nonleadership position. We are at a moment when mobs on the left and the right ignore evidence and destroy scapegoats. That’s when we need good leaders most.
