During a Facebook Live Session sponsored by OneUnited Bank — the largest African-American owned bank in the United States — Dr. Melina Abdullah asserted that institutions such as Wells Fargo and Citibank are “putting the dollars that you give them in the institutions that keep us oppressed” and “if you’re not going to bank black, you are funding white supremacy,” the Daily Wire reports.

In general, insecticides are toxic to humans because humans are quite a bit like bugs. Herbicides, on the other hand, are generally not very toxic to humans, because we aren’t a lot like plants. But even in this context, glyphosate stood out as a harmless chemical. It targets an enzyme that is found in plants, but not in humans or animals. Moreover, glyphosate breaks down easily and does not persist in the environment. It is pretty much the perfect herbicide (until resistance starts to develop, but that’s another story).

This sounds like a win-win situation–cheaper food, better health, longer lifespans–but some people irrationally hate genetically modified crops, even though the modification–in this case, making the corn or soybean plant tolerant of glyphosate–has nothing to do with its nutritional value. After decades of world-wide experience with glyphosate, it was accepted that the product was safe. So it was a bombshell when the International Agency for Research on Cancer declared, in March 2015, that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic,” based on tests on rodents.

Hundreds of cancer patients promptly sued Monsanto, claiming the company had concealed the danger of carcinogenicity, notwithstanding the fact that it would be hard to find a farmer who hadn’t been exposed to glyphosate. The European Union said it would consider IARC’s finding when deciding whether to continue to allow glyphosate to be used in Europe. “Environmentalists” had scored a major coup.

But the whole thing turned out to be a fraud.

As we all know, blacks and Mexicans have low test scores because wherever they happen to live, such as in convenient inner city locations, has tragic dirt. Progressive whites want them to move to the magic dirt of the suburbs, so they can get high test scores, and the progressive whites will then nobly move into these inner city hellholes where they can walk to work downtown. (How the blacks and Mexicans will get to their jobs from their new locations in remotes suburbs is one of those questions that never quite occurs to Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing supporters.)

Boyle Heights is a crummy but not too crummy Mexican neighborhood just east of booming Downtown Los Angeles. Not surprisingly a lot of white people are thinking of moving in. Not surprisingly, lots of Mexican activists are ginning up campaigns of racial hatred against white gentrifiers.

The scientists developed a new compound that sucks water vapor from the air—much like those humidity-absorbing packets of silica gel you find in shoeboxes. But unlike silica, the new material (synthetic molybdenum-sulphide) also acts as a semiconductor and water-splitting catalyst, meaning that it takes water molecules and separates them into oxygen and hydrogen, a clean fuel source.

The compound is made more effective when mixed with titanium oxide, a white pigment often found in house paint, which makes it easily applicable to a wide range of buildings.

The technology is likely still a few years away from commercialization, since the harvested hydrogen gas would still need to be collected somehow and stored until put to use.

The tiny land-locked African country of Lesotho is the poster child for the impending population explosion in the mind of journalist Eugene Linden.

In “Remember the Population Bomb? It’s Still Ticking,” an op-ed in the Sunday New York Times, Linden repeats a 40-year-old refrain: “Lesotho’s biggest problem probably was, and is, the obvious: too many people.”

Oh noes! The sky is falling! Women and minorities hardest hit! The planet will be destroyed!

Or maybe not:

How does Linden know that Lesotho is inhabited by “too many people”? The country’s population density is 176 people per square mile. But compare that to Malthusian hellholes like the United Kingdom (694 people per square mile); Germany (601 people); or the deities forfend, the Netherlands (2,852 people). In fact, the population density of the entire European Union is more than 300 people per square mile.

So I guess what he means is that Lesotho has too many black African people. But of course he can’t say that.

As you might expect, given a goal as audacious as “taking a cut of all economic activity”, Amazon has several different strategies. The key to the enterprise is AWS: if it is better to build an Internet-enabled business on the public cloud, and if all businesses will soon be Internet-enabled businesses, it follows that AWS is well-placed to take a cut of all business activity.

On the consumer side the key is Prime. While Amazon has long pursued a dominant strategy in retail — superior cost and superior selection — it is difficult to build sustainable differentiation on these factors alone. After all, another retailer is only a click away.

One of Amazon’s key features (that everybody knows implicitly but few realize explicitly) is informational — people go to Amazon not just to buy stuff bot to find out what stuff there is to buy. I catch myself doing it multiple times a day: I have a need, and go to Amazon to find out whether somebody out there makes a product that will fit that need, and roughly what that product might cost.

This is the ‘network effect’ writ large; he bigger the Amazon ‘marketplace’ becomes, the better an approximation of the entire market it is, and the better the informational function that it can serve. I don’t know whether this was a conscious decision on Bezox’ part, but it may have been — when Amazon was Just Books, it dumped a universe of information on its site about books, many of which it didn’t even sell; old geezers of my generation may recall when Amazon was castigated by the Usual Suspects for doing so. But it got us accustomed to going to Amazon to find out what books were out there, even if they couldn’t be bought from Amazon, and eventually we got used to buying them from Amazon when we could, and that habit expanded with the expansion of Amazon’s stock.

This, though, is the brilliance of Prime: thanks to its reliability and convenience (two days shipping, sometimes faster!), plus human fallibility when it comes to considering sunk costs (you’ve already paid $99!), why even bother looking anywhere else? With Prime Amazon has created a powerful moat around consumer goods that does not depend on simply having the lowest price, because Prime customers don’t even bother to check.

Today, all of the logistics that go into a Whole Foods store are for the purpose of stocking physical shelves: the entire operation is integrated. What I expect Amazon to do over the next few years is transform the Whole Foods supply chain into a service architecture based on primitives: meat, fruit, vegetables, baked goods, non-perishables (Whole Foods’ outsized reliance on store brands is something that I’m sure was very attractive to Amazon). What will make this massive investment worth it, though, is that there will be a guaranteed customer: Whole Foods Markets.

Baltimore has the nickname of “Bodymore, Murderville” because of a high rate of homicide and the habit of the locals spray painting the slogan on abandoned buildings. The other “slogan” you see around the city is a re-write of a marketing campaign run by the city a few years back. The pols had the idea of putting the word “Believe” on everything, so the more clever changed it to “Behave” which gets to the heart of the issue. The city has a huge population of people who cannot behave themselves like civilized people.

Currently the city is on pace for over 360 murders and we are just getting into peak killing season. Usually, the winter tamps down the murder rates as it is just not as much fun to pop a cap in an ass when it is snowing sideways. Similarly, the spring has been very rainy and gangsters tend not to like going out to murder people for their sneakers when it is raining. In other words, it’s possible there is a lot of pent up demand for murder that will now be unleashed with the summer weather.

A high-level employee at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2014 appeared to give leaders of liberal-leaning groups preferential treatment for posting and publicizing comments on the agency’s public forum for the net neutrality debate.

Details of the highly friendly support were first described by then-The Washington Post’s Nancy Scola, who referred to it as an “unusual collaboration” in an in-depth report on the FCC’s filing system. Those details became significantly more incriminating after Mike Wendy, director of the market-oriented nonprofit MediaFreedom, recently received once-classified pieces of electronic communications years after he filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. Wendy alleges that, along with other conservative organizations, they were not given the same effortful and enthusiastic treatment their liberal counterparts received.

Today while I was out running errands in my 5-year-old Honda Accord, I passed a Tesla. If I were a different kind of guy, seeing Elon Musk’s latest creation whisk past me as I trundled along in my middleclassmobile might have inspired a sense of personal envy, or even some worry about the social implications of inequality in America.

But I’m an economist. And let’s face it: In practical terms, the difference between a $200,000 Tesla and my last car, a beat-up minivan worth $2,000 at trade-in, is not all that large. They’re both safe forms of transportation that get you from point A to point B and, given legal limits and the reality of suburban traffic, most of the time they’re driven at roughly the same speeds.

In that sense, measures of income inequality overstate the differences within a developed country like the United States. The products available to the masses are, in many cases, nearly as good as those available only to the elite. Your garbageman’s old Timex and your podiatrist’s brand new Rolex serve almost precisely the same function.

It wasn’t always so. A century ago, a hungry rich person had access to significantly more food and more choices than a poor one. Yet even bluebloods would have been able to get their hands on less variety and quality than one now finds at an average Midwestern all-you-can-eat buffet. When Herbert Hoover promised “a chicken in every pot” in the election of 1928, it was the sort of pledge that no one expected a politician to actually keep. Today, each American consumes an average of 27 chickens a year, and obesity is a bigger problem than hunger.

Microsoft has quietly unveiled a new “Modern Keyboard” with an integrated fingerprint reader. The Modern Keyboard is the successor to the Surface Keyboard, and looks identical. The only changes are a new fingerprint reader and the ability to use a cable for a wired connection instead of wireless.

Microsoft has integrated the fingerprint reader into the second Windows key on the right-hand side of the keyboard, and it can be used to log into Windows 10 or websites using Windows Hello. The new Modern Keyboard will work with Windows 10, MacOS, and the latest versions of Android.

Amazon.com, like many big businesses, isn’t a fan of labor unions. In contract negotiations, organized workers demand higher wages, layoffs by seniority and sometimes threaten to strike. Amazon has successfully fended off U.S. labor unions since its founding in 1994.

Nobuyoshi Yamasaki’s venture TBM Co. makes paper from limestone, a rock it proclaims is “almost inexhaustible.” He says it’s the answer to concerns over deforestation and water shortages, with world demand for paper set to double by 2030.

PillPack is trying to solve the problem of drug adherence by simplifying your medicine cabinet. Medication arrives in the mail presorted into clear plastic packets, each marked in a large font with vital information: day, time, pills inside, dosages. These are ordered chronologically in a roll that slots into the dispenser. Let’s say you need to take four different pills in the morning and two others in the afternoon every day: Those pills would be sorted into two tear-off packets: one marked 8am, followed immediately by the 2pm packet.

A great idea. The only question is how this squares with people’s insurance plans.

THE FIRE THAT raged through a London apartment building on Wednesday night horrified engineers for more than its terrible human cost—at least 12 people died in the blaze at the 24-story tall Grenfell Tower, and London authorities expect to find more as they search the still-smoldering ruin. It was a disaster made even worse for its utter lack of unexpectedness. Residents had been warning about shoddy maintenance and smoking electrical equipment for at least four years.

But what investigators will have to figure out is exactly how the fire spread the way it did—because a fast-burning ignition that spreads from floor to floor of a tower block is exactly what modern building and fire codes are supposed to prevent. The mantra of high-rise fire protection is compartmentation, suppression, and evacuation, in that order. In London, the first two failed, but that’s unusual. It’s that third priority—getting out—that researchers around the world are still trying to solve.

This is why I would never live in a high-rise, and why I laugh at all of the ‘urban planners’ who think that ‘density’ is the answer to all our problems. Until we have the technology, uh, no thanks.

In the wake of the shooting of Congressman Steve Scalise on Wednesday, many liberal journalists and celebrities on Twitter and other social media sites began exploiting the tragedy, lobbying for gun control or bashing Republicans. But, New York Daily News commentator Shaun King chose specifically to blame white people for the incident. Embarking on a Twitter tirade he tweeted out the following,“Instead of white people, in general, taking the heat for James Hodgkinson, he is almost instantly being called a liberal radical.”

Maybe because he was. Bernie Sanders supporter, hates Trump, shoots Republicans — yeah, that says ‘liberal radical’ to me.

King gained worldwide notoriety back in 2015 when, as a Black Lives Matter activist, he was revealed to be white despite having previously identified himself as black.

He sure sounds black.

Really? Fusion.com exploits the fact that a black lesbian is a member of the Capitol Police force to label a wounded Republican congressman a “bigoted homophobe.”

Well, of course — he’s Republican, so of course he’s a bigot, of course he’s a homophobe, everyone knows that.

Has Steve Scalise, or any other GOP member of Congress, advocated a policy that would prohibit hiring of black people, women, or homosexuals as Capitol Police? No, that never happened, and so labeling Scalise a “bigoted homophobe” is merely a continuation of the anti-Republican rhetoric that inspired “passionate progressive” James Hodgkinson to open fire Wednesday morning.

In April, I called attention to how the Left has developed the habit of using “hate” as a synonym for Republican. This rhetorical tactic explains the mood of irrational fear and rage that has gripped so many on the Left since Donald Trump was elected President. There is nothing that separates the shooter Hodgkinson from the typical “progressive” blogger. Hodgkinson was part of the “Occupy” protests and denounced the “one percent” — the same kind of sentiment commonly espoused by Democrat politicians and their liberal media allies. Demonizing their opponents in this way has become standard operating procedure for the Left — “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it,” to quote Saul Alinsky — and we should not be surprised when such tactics inspire criminal violence. As Rep. Rodney Davis said, this is “rhetorical terrorism.”

Seattle City Councilman Tim Burgess introduced a bill in 2015 to place a $25 tax on every firearm sold and a 5-cent tax on every ammunition round sold.

Since the tax took effect, gun violence has risen and gun sales have decreased, leading to a much smaller payout than the city expected, Fox News Reports.

Amazing how that works.

Dave Workman believes the city should have predicted the rise in violence. “All these gun control laws affect the wrong people. The gang bangers don’t go in and buy ammunition at retail, at least not around here. It certainly hasn’t stopped them from getting their hands on firearms.”

During a multi-year wild blueberry glut, government agencies have been using subsidies and grants to encourage Maine farmers to keep growing the crop. Too bad no one seems to want them. Maine has a glut of the berries, and now the governor of Maine hopes to help sell them off by spending $2.5 million on agricultural marketing.

Farmers have been growing wild blueberries in Maine since the mid 1800s. The berries perish quickly, so 99 percent of the crop is frozen, making it easier for a berry surplus to continue from previous years.
