Proof Electric Cars DO Cause More Pollution Than Normal Ones: Study Shows Impact Is Worse Than Petrol-Powered Vehicles

31st May 2012

Read it.

A study of pollution in 34 Chinese cities has found that the electricity generated by power stations to drive electric vehicles leads to more fine particle emissions than petrol-powered transport.

No surprise to some of us.

Of course it does. Burning coal ALWAYs produces more fine particulates than burning gasoline. In fact, fine particulates are the signal feature of coal burning power plants. Along with mercury. And sulfides of varied toxicity.

However, we have this nifty stuff called ‘natural gas’, which is supposed to be the Great Savior of the Energy Crisis. So, not to worry.

The fuel isn’t really the issue; the efficiency is. Using CNG in a car is always going to result in more efficiency and less pollution than burning it (as natural gas) in a power plant, generating electricity, transporting the electricity, and charging a set of batteries.

While I normally would not cite Exxon-Mobile for such info, I did happen to stumble upon this web page on How Many Gallons of Gasoline Would it Take to Charge an Iphone and it does illustrate why liquid fuels will continue to dominate transportation.

Except that the government bureaucrats, Democrats all, won’t let us extract it. So resume worrying.
