This extract comes from the publisher’s blurb of David Veevers’ ambitious and wide-ranging new book, The Great Defiance: How the World Took On the British Empire. To be sure, competing for shares of the market for slaves against European traders qualifies, at least technically, as “resistance” — but is that really of the “empowering” sort? Empowering to whom? Could a modern and progressive historian really write in praise of African slave-traders for being better at slave-trading than their European competitors?

Sure can. Look at all of the black people in the U.S. who affect Muslim names, despite the role that Muslim slave-traders had in the global traffic in African slaves. (I don’t see any Jews naming their kids ‘Adolf’ or ‘Heinrich’.)

What happened: AnaYelsi Velasco-Sanchez, a radical left-wing IndoLatinx artist whose work focuses on “justice” and “liberation,” was living the dream at her first solo exhibition in Washington, D.C., until a thief ran off with two of her paintings.

“I feel violated, and I’m grieving the lost art, but mostly I’m feeling shocked at the boldness and thoughtlessness of entering a community space, and stealing art that is all about justice and liberation,” Velasco-Sanchez wrote in an Instagram post announcing the theft.

One of the stolen paintings, valued at $200 each, was titled Bountiful: The Land of Thoughts and Prayers. It dealt with “gun violence and state sanctioned violence in the United States,” the artist said on TikTok, a Chinese spyware app and social media platform.

And oh, was it ever ugly….

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is feeling the heat being generated by the tens of thousands of illegal aliens pouring into his city, causing excruciating administrative and budgetary dilemmas for the city government. It’s hard to feel much sympathy for New Yorkers. In fact it’s hard not to laugh at the fools.

They have brought these misfortunes on themselves by voting for an Open Borders party to run the federal government and for local politicians who cherish New York as a Sanctuary City with a local ordinance guaranteeing sheltered accommodation to anyone who asks for it.
