{"id":57834,"date":"2011-04-12T08:59:03","date_gmt":"2011-04-12T14:59:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dyspepsiageneration.com\/?p=57834"},"modified":"2011-04-12T09:00:43","modified_gmt":"2011-04-12T15:00:43","slug":"they-made-a-desert-and-called-it-a-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dyspepsiageneration.com\/?p=57834","title":{"rendered":"They Made a Desert and Called it a Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oldurbanist.blogspot.com\/2011\/04\/they-made-desert-and-called-it-park.html\" target=\"_blank\">Read it.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Throughout the project, the mantra that the Central Artery had severed\u00a0the city, and that its\u00a0burial underground*\u00a0somehow would\u00a0&#8220;knit the city back together&#8221; seemed\u00a0oblivious to the fact that it was not the <em>Artery<\/em> which had severed the city, really,\u00a0but the demolition of over 1,000\u00a0buildings for the Artery&#8217;s right of way which had done so.\u00a0 Removing the Artery  simply revealed that pre-existing wound to the heart of the city, a gap  so wide and poorly-defined even Baron Haussman might have thought it could\u00a0use a little narrowing.<\/p>\n<p>With no one able to agree on anything in particular,  the\u00a0environmentalists of the late 1980s stepped in to offer the  compelling alternative of nothing,\u00a0packaged under the name &#8220;open space,&#8221;  and obtained\u00a0a requirement that  75%\u00a0of the\u00a0land above the buried highway be set aside for\u00a0it.\u00a0 The  realization has only recently sunk in that even &#8220;nothing&#8221; must be paid  for, as the conservancy tasked with maintaining the Greenway has now proposed taxing abutting property owners to raise funds, the largesse of Boston&#8217;s citizens, already maintaining  several\u00a0very large parks in close proximity,\u00a0apparently falling short.\u00a0  Thus, land that, under private ownership,\u00a0might have provided millions  of dollars in tax revenue to the city, and hosted thousands of jobs and  apartments, has become a money pit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read it.
