The elections are contests that determine whether these tiny dense speckles of blue voters can outvote these sparsely populated sprawling swaths of red voters.<\/p>\n<p>And whether or not that happens, is determined in large part by how close to the coastline the state is. Check the map. The landlocked states, by and large, are \u201cred\u201d states\u2026even though each and every single one has cities that vote blue. They just got outvoted by the red. And then the coastline states are blue states.
