Making a powerful laser is not news. I remember an ACS lecture in the late 70′s about a laser developed for the DOE to try to drill sideways through oil shale. (You don’t hear much about in-situ combustion because of the massive – and I do mean massive – failures of the DOE experiments during the ’70′s and ’80′s.)
The trick is to make a laser that will destroy it’s target without creating a plasma cloud that races back to the source and destroys the laser. One of those little technical problems that gets skipped in sci-fi movies.
