I have several pet peeves, and one of them is the idea that when Americans get to keep their own money, it somehow “costs” the government.

Yeah, me too. The assumption seems to be that anything you earn belongs to the government automatically, and they graciously allow you to keep some of it, aren’t they the nice ones.
