    It didn’t work when it was Carl Sagan’s Nuclear Winter.

    But it doesn’t have to actually work – all it has to do is get enough people excited to make research funding available.

    If it doesn’t get cold, change your direction to hot. If it doesn’t go far enough hot or cold, use the word “change” and make sure everyone understands that “change” must be “bad”. Find a species that isn’t particularly doing well anyway, toss in the term “fragile”, and hint that extinction could result from change. Amazon frogs, polar bears, and reefs all work well – who’s gonna prove different?
