American Dialects

Read it.

I was amused to hear Larry Page, a co-founder of Google, in this YouTube video clip. It’s almost like hearing myself — another native of the east-central-south portion of Michigan’s lower peninsula.

I was interested to note, when I actually had a chance to listen to Dan Rather in person, that he has a definite Texas accent that disappears entirely when he is in front of a camera.

I dislike my accent so much that I’ve often considered going to a voice coach to get rid of it. But then the people who’ve known me for a long time would wonder why I was affecting some kind of TV-broadcaster accent.

I find myself adjusting my accent to fit those to whom I am talking. Sometimes that’s easier than others.
