When I was in college (forty-plus years ago), I worked for a professor in the English department, and one of the jobs he gave me was going through his student’s essays and correcting their grammar, spelling, and punctuation before he read them and graded them on their actual content. The college had a reputation for being highly selective, but some of the blunders in these students’ essays really made me wonder. I suspect it has only gotten worse since then, spellcheck notwithstanding.
