Read it.

But will they stop the stupid gasohol mandate? Of course not! Think of all those campaign contributors depending on all those subsidies!

MTBE (methy tertiary butyl ether) was replaced in gasoline with ethanol under a rare combination of panic over potential groundwater pollution by California’s Feinstein and the push for improved corn prices by the “corn” states. In fact, MTBE is a lot easier to remove from water than ethanol. Once again, why bother with facts?

MTBE was a pretty good antiknock compound that kept the price of gasoline down. For about a year, when gasoline prices (esp. for high test) were really high, we were shipping out MTBE as fast as we could while foreign countries were sending us alkylate (the part of gasoline that raises the octane level). MTBE cost about 30 cents per gallon and alkylate was fetching about $2/gallon. It was a great business, but the American consumer paid the difference.
