Politics Explained

That explains everything you see on television (including movies and commercials), hear on the radio, or see in the print media.

Waiting for White Magical Thinking

25th September 2017

Read it.

Like the great majority of American white people of earlier eras, slaveholder Thomas Jefferson and abolitionist Abraham Lincoln held the belief that (a) blacks probably could not hack it as free men in modern society and (b) white people would never tolerate them as equals, in any event.

Martin Luther King, Thurgood Marshall, and the rest of the leadership of the civil rights movement had no illusions about immediately converting the great mass of angry/terrified white Southerners to the cause of equality so they always pitched their words and deeds to a larger national white audience.

What white people thought about black people largely controlled and constrained the lives of the latter for most of our history. One the perverse, unexpected consequences of that fact is the increasingly weird, magical thinking that what white people think still controls and constrains black lives.

This is key. Until black people quit thinking that their lives rotate around what white people think, things will never improve.

When a African-American cop (working under a African-American police chief) in a city where white supremacists in power are about as common as unicorns (Milwaukee) shot Sylville Smith, an armed African-American suspect who aimed a weapon at pursuing police, there was a three-day riot and a relative of the fallen suspect said “white people are the devil.”

Which is as delusional as the Nazi fantasy that the Jews were responsible for everything wrong in the world.

Similarly, in Baltimore, Freddie Gray was killed in a negligent fashion in a police van with an African-American police driver after an arrest by three African-American and three white officers who worked under a African-American police chief responsible to a African-American mayor and majority African-American city council in a country where civil rights complaints were referred to a African-American US Attorney General appointed by a African-American President. Yet for many, the incident was somehow about white racism.

The whole ‘intersectionality’ excuse is just another way of saying ‘whatever happens, white people are to blame, even if they weren’t even involved’.

White people actually have constrained and deformed black lives in the modern era but not from malignant racism so much as spectacularly bad social welfare policies designed by white liberals. Our national policies destroyed family life, natural social ties, and solid childhood formation. These programs have had the net effect of fostering crime, poverty, and substance-abuse and thus made clashes with law enforcement vastly more common.

White liberals also found various ideological means to crush substantive academic achievement just in case the deformative process of atomization was not sufficiently harmful.

For the majority of African-Americans who are not part of the poverty culture, white liberals also found a way to undermine their place in society with “affirmative action.” The previous presumption that an African-American with a professional degree is probably at least as good if not better than most whites because of what he or she had to overcome has been replaced with the nagging suspicion that he or she may be in that position only because of affirmative action.

There are white people against which black people have a legitimate beef, but it’s the white people who are allegedly on their side.

Jacquard by Google

25th September 2017

Read it.

Specifically tailored with the urban cyclist in mind, the Levi’s Commuter Trucker Jacket was designed for getting around the city. The jacket features articulated shoulders to provide extra room to maneuver, reflectors, and a dropped hem to keep you covered as you ride. You can easily access your digital world because Jacquard technology is woven right into the sleeve.

Tiny electronics contained in the flexible snap tag connect the Jacquard Threads in the jacket’s cuff to your mobile device. The snap tag lets you know about incoming information, like a phone call, by giving you light and haptic feedback. Inspired by a strap that you would see on a cuff, it looks and feels like it’s a part of the jacket. The tag also houses the battery which can last up to 2 weeks between USB charges.

We have the technology.

Update: Google and Levi’s first smart jacket is a wash  Oops.

Trump and the Professional Athletes

25th September 2017

Paul Rahe looks the situation over.

I will say this for Donald Trump. He really knows how to hit a nerve. He has an instinctive understanding of wrongs swept under the carpet and of how to get those who perpetrate those wrongs to rise up and do themselves harm.

I do not personally much like his way of going about things. Schoolboy taunts seem to me childish and unpresidential, and they can be counter-effective. But let’s face it: with this weapon, he made mincemeat of his Republican opponents, and he defeated Hillary Clinton. He knows something that those of us who are more conventional do not quite get.

Scott Adams has been teaching this almost daily for about a year.

Every once in a while, however, I get a glimpse of what Trump is up to, and then I really am impressed. His attack on the NFL could not be more timely.

I knew Paul at Yale in the mid-70s. He is scary smart and very sound on political questions.

Trump’s Wall Would Protect Hundreds of Miles of Critical Habitat and Environmentalists Want to Stop It

25th September 2017

Environmentalists are suing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for suspending environmental regulations in order to construct a border wall along the U.S. boundary with Mexico, despite evidence of “significant” environmental damage caused by illegal immigration.

While wall construction will affect animal movements to a certain extent, illegal immigration also poses a threat to endangered animals. The CBD lawsuit runs counter to the stated goals of environmentalists, GOP Rep. Rob Bishop of Utah told The Daily Caller News Foundation in an email.

Stevie Wonder Kneels ‘For America’ at Global Citizen Festival [VIDEO]

24th September 2017

Nobody attending a ‘global citizen festival’ is doing anything ‘for America’, no matter what is blathered. The whole point of a ‘global citizen festival’ is that we need to get beyond such nationalist ideas as America and embrace the world as our home.

This is just racialist politics and virtue signaling. I had thought Stevie Wonder was above that, but I guess not.

Self-Driving Cars Are Cool, but They’re Not for Everyone

24th September 2017

Jerome Lucille points out some inconvenient truth.

Once upon a time, mass transit was the technocrat’s preferred method for prying people out of their wasteful, dangerous cars. If only we could subsidize the right combination of buses, trolleys, jitneys, light rail, monorail, and bullet trains—the thinking went—all our problems would be solved. To save the planet, “public transportation should be favored over private automobiles, and the cars heavily taxed,” wrote Hugh McDonald of New York City College of Technology in a 2014 book on environmental philosophy. That view is shared by a number of other scholars and policy makers who hope to eliminate traffic deaths, largely by getting rid of cars.

But now there’s a new kid on the block: self-driving cars. The trouble is that neither of these approaches takes into account the reality that almost 20 percent of the population of the United States live in the low-population rural areas that make up the majority of the country’s land mass, and they’re not about to trade in the F-150 for a newfangled robot chariot.

Automobiles mean freedom — freedom to go from where we are to where we want to be at a time and pace of our own choosing. Those Who Know How To Live Our Lives Better Than We Do (Socialists, Communists, Environmentalists, and other varieties of Democrat) don’t like this freedom; they’d much rather we Do It Their Way. They pretty it up with cool-sounding words, but that’s the bottom line.

UN Admits It Can’t Link Global Warming to the Spike in World Hunger, Then Does It Anyway

24th September 2017

Read it.

“Although it is impossible to establish a causal relation, the impact of climate change-related phenomena (such as the higher frequency of extreme events, be them floods or drought) cannot be ruled out as one of the causes for the reduced per capita availability of food in several countries,” the U.N. admitted.

Even so, the U.N. warned droughts and floods, “linked in part to El Niño phenomenon and climate-related shocks,” hurt food production, they can’t say for sure this is behind the increase in global hunger. The U.N. even admits global food production was high enough to feed everyone on the planet, despite weather shocks.

The U.N. still claimed global warming was a compounding factor behind the spike in hunger statistics.

The Lie of Equality

22nd September 2017

Read it.

There is no such thing as ‘equality’ because life doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

The tests that a chaotic world throws at human beings is never equal or balanced in measure to our strengths to pass them. Equality, in the terms that egalitarian equalists are comfortable in defining it, implies that that every individual is equally matched in both value and utility within a totality of random challenges. Aside from this being patently false, it also demerits both strengths and weaknesses when that individual succeeds or fails at a particular challenge as a result of their individual character.

Ritchie has more support in the Republican primary than every other candidate combined, with a 29 percent lead over the potential candidates, according to the poll. Pollsters also said that Ritchie looks strong among supporters of Trump.

Today Education Secretary Betsy DeVos withdrew the Obama-era letter instructing colleges to use the preponderance of evidence standard when adjudicating sexual assault.

DeVos called the previous guidelines—distributed to colleges in 2011 as part of a “dear colleague” letter, then clarified in 2014—well-intentioned but flawed.

“These documents have led to the deprivation of rights for many students—both accused students denied fair process and victims denied an adequate resolution of their complaints,” reads the new “dear colleague” letter, which was signed by Acting Assistant Secretary Candice Jackson and approved by DeVos.*

Feinstein Rejects Another Judicial Nominee for Religious Views

22nd September 2017

Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee want to block a Trump administration judicial nominee because of his conservative Christian views.

President Donald Trump tapped Jeff Mateer as a lifetime federal judge. But comments he has made on same-sex marriage and transgender rights are upsetting Democrats Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, according to The Dallas Morning News.

“There’s no question these views cast serious doubt on his ability to fairly enforce federal law and treat people impartially,” Feinstein said in a statement.

Article VI, section 3, of the United States Constitution provides, in relevant part: “… but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”  Senator Feinstein, who took an oath to support the Constitution when she was sworn in as a Senator, appears to be laying herself open to impeachment.
