Anarchists Carrying ‘No Hate’ Shields Assault People At Berkeley Protest

27th August 2017

Read it.

A large group of anarchists interrupted a left-wing protest against a canceled right-wing demonstration in Berkeley, Calif., attacking five people Sunday afternoon.

Scorecards! Getcher scorecards here! Can’t tell the victims without a scorecard!

A hundred anarchists moved through the police line and were able to enter into the crowd of about 2,000 people. While there, the group assaulted some Trump supporters and other right-wing counter protesters who showed up to the rally.

The ‘No Hate’ shields were a nice ironic touch.

Lighting a Candle on the Road to Damascus

27th August 2017

Sarah Hoyt provides some adult supervision.

Science fiction and fantasy icon Ursula K Le Guin  has a rather tiresome essay saying that she was once “a man.”  Because, she says, once upon a time the only role models available for women were male, and therefore she viewed herself as a man.  Yes, I’m rolling eyes as I type this, just as I rolled them while reading the nonsense the first time.

I’ve often expounded my theory that people who need someone who is exactly like them in external characteristics to enjoy a book or a movie, have never left the early toddler stage, where having your name in a book really helps you enjoy it.

I never had that problem, and reading stories with men or boys never made me less of a woman.  Perhaps, of course, because I knew a lot of women in normal, everyday life.

Don’t look around for a role model — strive to be a role model.

Bill Clinton’s Pardon of Fugitive Marc Rich Continues to Pay Big

26th August 2017

Read it.

Fifteen years ago this month, on Jan. 20, 2001, his last day in office, Bill Clinton issued a pardon for international fugitive Marc Rich. It would become perhaps the most condemned official act of Clinton’s political career. A New York Times editorial called it “a shocking abuse of presidential power.” The usually Clinton-friendly New Republic noted it “is often mentioned as Exhibit A of Clintonian sliminess.”

Congressman Barney Frank added, “It was a real betrayal by Bill Clinton of all who had been strongly supportive of him to do something this unjustified. It was contemptuous.”

And yet nowadays who remembers?

At least Arpaio wasn’t asked to fork over cash.

Where Is the Electric Car a Good Idea?

26th August 2017

A European analysis.

Politicians and car manufacturers praise electric cars as a solution to fight climate change, but the life cycle analysis of the whole vehicle shows that electric cars also cause pollution, sometimes even more than gas and diesel cars.

Manufacturing of batteries is a highly energy-consuming process. However, the main reason why the carbon footprint of electric vehicles can be significant is the way electricity is produced. Electricity emission factor is different according to the type of power plant (coal, natural gas, nuclear, hydroelectricity, wind power…), so greenhouse gases emissions produced by an electric car change a lot from one country to another due to the type of power plants.

I will buy an electric car when I can get 400 miles on a charge and can recharge it in the five minutes it takes to fill up a tank of gas — only then.

Hate group hits jackpot

26th August 2017

Read it.

The ludicrously misnamed Southern Poverty Law Center has become a scam operating as a left-wing hate cult. The SPLC specializes in directing something far beyond the Orwellian Two Minutes Hate to the likes of Charles Murray and Ayaan Hirsi Ali and others it designates for opprobrium as “extremists” or a “hate group.” Where once was Emmanuel Goldstein and his followers is now Murray, Ali and a host of others guilty of thoughtcrime.

Earlier this year Charles Murray responded to the SPLC’s libel of him in “Charles Murray’s SPLC page as edited by Charles Murray.” This week Ms. Ali took to the New York Times to ask why the SPLC is hating on her and her friends.

If there is such a thing as a “hate group,” the SPLC is it. Indeed, I think it can safely be declared “Our leading hate group.”

As a result of which:

In the column linked above Ms. Ali notes that the SPLC has hit the jackpot in the aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville that left one woman dead and 19 injured. It “is set to receive millions of dollars in donations” from Apple, JPMorgan Chase and others. John noted Apple’s $1 million pledge to the SPLC last week; Apple will also match employee donations to the SPLC on a two-for-one basis.

Why do liberals hate so much? Because that’s where the money is. (Just ask Al Sharpton.)

Transgender Victimhood Narrative: Police Shoot Knife-Wielding ‘Person’

25th August 2017

Read it.

“Don’t bring a knife to a gunfight” is pretty good advice, but evidently nobody told this to Kenneth “Kiwi” Herring. On Tuesday in St. Louis, Herring attacked a 30-year-old neighbor with a knife, inflicting “severe lacerations” on the man’s face, arms and torso. When police arrived and attempted to arrest Herring, they say he/“she” refused to put down the knife and attacked one of the officers, slicing him in the arm. The officers then fatally shot Herring, who thus became “the 18th Trans Person Murdered in 2017,” according to the lesbian blog Autostraddle.

Of course, if you attack a police officer with a knife, it’s not murder when the cop shoots you, but this is how it how social-justice crusades operate — when the facts don’t fit the narrative, the facts don’t matter.

NYT: “Blacks and Hispanics Are More Underrepresented at Top Colleges Than 35 Years Ago”

25th August 2017

Steve Sailer does a little fisking.

– It’s almost as if 45 to 50 years of affirmative action haven’t succeeded in making blacks and Hispanics smarter …

Assumed without any attempted justification in the NYT article: That ‘blacks and Hispanics’ ought to be ‘represented’ somehow in ‘top colleges’. (This is a proglodyte religious dogma based on the contrary-to-fact beliefs that All People Are The Same and Race Is Not A Thing.)

Reality is something that exists even when you don’t believe it.

Feminist Professor Claims Fatness Is Liberatory, Is Shocked by Women Who Laughed at Her

25th August 2017

An Arizona State University professor has expressed disappointment at the results of a study she conducted with around 20 women, all of whom consider gaining 100 pounds to be a negative thing. She expected them to embrace her views of fatness as a “liberatory” experience.

To begin with, ‘liberatory’ isn’t a real word.

Breanne Fahs, a self-described “fat woman” who teaches Women and Gender Studies at ASU was dismayed by the study in which “no participants described gaining 100 pounds as a positive thing to imagine.”

Maybe they know something that she doesn’t.

Protesters Hurt After Man Allegedly Tries to Drive Through Crowd

After attending a vigil, some people took to the streets and blocked an intersection, St. Louis police officers said. A man tried to drive through the intersection and honked many times to try and get protesters to move, the department said in a statement. “The protesters surrounded the vehicle and began striking it with their hands and a flag pole. Several protesters also kicked and jumped on top of the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle … proceeded to drive away when three protesters … fell from the vehicle,” a department spokesperson said in a statement.

Statue of Limitations

24th August 2017

Steven Hayward at Powerline has some fun.

I see Trump has said some outlandish things lately. Like this: “I do not consider Hitler to be as bad as he is depicted. He is showing an ability that is amazing, and seems to be gaining his victories without much bloodshed.” More: “Germans of future generations will honor Herr Hitler as a genius, as a brave man, a matchless organizer and much more.”

Wait—did I say Trump? Sorry—these comments came from Gandhi. The first quote was made in May 1940, as Hitler was readying to roll over France, and the second quote was made on June 22, 1940, the day France capitulated. Time magazine seriously considered Gandhi to be “Person of the Century” back in 1999 before settling on Einstein as a safe and uncontroversial choice.

I guess Trump is the New Gandhi, except that he’s not.

Time had to tap dance to explain why they didn’t re-up with their “Man of the Half Century” from 1950, who was Winston Churchill. Here’s how Time explained it then:

Well, the passage of time can alter our perspective. A lot has happened since 1950. . . In his approach to domestic issues, individual rights and the liberties of colonial subjects, Churchill turned out to be a romantic refugee from a previous era who ended up on the wrong side of history.

In other words, Churchill was politically incorrect.

Whups, there’s that Wrong Side of History again. Like the boogey-man, it’ll get you if you don’t watch out.

Now Timereports that the African nation of Ghana is taking down a statue of Gandhi because of his condescending views of Africans (long known by anyone who studied Gandhi even casually), because why should the U.S. have all the fun:

Ghana has said it will remove a statue of Mahatma Gandhi from a university campus in the nation’s capital where it had sparked protests over the leader’s allegedly racist attitudes.

I love that “allegedly.” I note that Trump’s supposed racism is never considered to be “alleged.” In any case, I think Time has some old editors to erase from their collective memory for their bad judgment about Gandhi.

Maybe Hitler was the New Gandhi, except when he wasn’t. Gandhi can’t be the New Trump, because Hitler came first, or something.

Further Difficulties Emerge for the Transgender Victimhood Narrative

23rd August 2017

The Other McCain is scouting the trail and finding nada.

According to “social justice” advocates, there is an epidemic of anti-transgender violence for which Donald Trump and Republicans are to blame. The only thing wrong with that claim is the complete lack of evidence to support it. LGBT activists and liberal journalists keep calling attention to the murders of “Transgender Women of Color,” and the facts continue contradicting the social-justice narrative.

Apparently transgender groups are shooting each other and blaming it on Trump. Or something like that.

A Thorium-Salt Reactor Has Fired Up for the First Time in Four Decades

23rd August 2017

Read it.

The road to cleaner, meltdown-proof nuclear power has taken a big step forward. Researchers at NRG, a Dutch nuclear materials firm, have begun the first tests of nuclear fission using thorium salts since experiments ended at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the early 1970s.

Thorium has several advantages over uranium, the fuel that powers most nuclear reactors in service today. First, it’s much harder to weaponize. Second, as we pointed out last year in a long read on thorium-salt reactors, designs that call for using it in a liquid form are, essentially, self-regulating and fail-safe.

The Unfortunate Fallout of Campus Postmodernism

23rd August 2017

Read it.

In a 1946 essay in the London Tribune entitled “In Front of Your Nose,” George Orwell noted that “we are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield.”

The intellectual battlefields today are on college campuses, where students’ deep convictions about race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation and their social justice antipathy toward capitalism, imperialism, racism, white privilege, misogyny and “cissexist heteropatriarchy” have bumped up against the reality of contradictory facts and opposing views, leading to campus chaos and even violence. Students at the University of California, Berkeley, and outside agitators, for example, rioted at the mere mention that conservative firebrands Milo Yiannopoulos and Ann Coulter had been invited to speak (in the end, they never did). Demonstrators at Middlebury College physically attacked libertarian author Charles Murray and his liberal host, professor Allison Stanger, pulling her hair, twisting her neck and sending her to the ER.*

War of the Classes

23rd August 2017

Steve Sailer connects the dots.

Rewriting the past to help disinherit the powerless by demeaning their ancestors is an ancient practice currently growing in popularity. For example, this summer in Madison and Boston, government officials have obliterated or covered up grave markers commemorating prisoners of war who died in captivity.

This is justified as punching up against white supremacy. After all, who is more powerful than a dead POW?

Why are politicians today going out of their way to disrespect Confederate soldiers who died in Union prison camps more than 150 years ago? Because they can. Because this kind of vandalism is a classic turf-marking exercise understood by even the dimmest juvenile delinquents. Because desecration of memorials to the dead signifies that their living heirs are vulnerable to rapacity.

PayPal Forced to Reinstate Conservative Sites After Public Outrage

23rd August 2017

We’re not the Soviet Union quite yet, it seems.

PayPal reinstated the accounts of two conservative websites it banned after receiving blowback over their decision.

PayPal notified Jihad Watch and the American Freedom Defense Initiative (ADFI) on Monday night that they were reversing the decision to ban their accounts following public outcry:

Jihad Watch is not a ‘conservative site’, except insofar as wanting to document the existential danger to Western civilization from Islam is somehow ‘conservative’; I guess a willingness to accept reality is ‘conservative’. Both are certainly anti-proglodyte sites, and hence incompatible with the Narrative, which is undoubtedly why they were targeted. It’s all part and parcel of the common proglodyte meme that those documenting actual hate groups, which Islam obviously is, are somehow hate groups themselves.

Have You Done What You’re Told Yet, White People?

22nd August 2017

Read it.

Recently, a Black Lives Matter activist named Chanelle Helm published a list of 10 requests for white people. It included such reasonable entreaties as “When you die, will your property to a black or brown family” and “Build free housing for black and brown people” and “Get a racist fired.” Have you done what you’re told yet, white people?

Looks like White Privilege has nothing to compare to Fashionable Minority Victim Privilege.

Fake News Alert: Secret Service Not Running Out of Money Because of Trump and Family

22nd August 2017

Read it.

Major news outlets around the country would have you think that the United States Secret Service is running out of money due to President Trump’s frequent travel and large family.

Problem is, that’s not true. According to a press release from Director Alles:

This issue is not one that can be attributed to the current Administration’s protection requirements alone, but rather has been an ongoing issue for nearly a decade due to an overall increase in operational tempo.

It’s all about the Narrative, Larry.
