A Kansas physician says he makes the same income and offers better quality care to his patients after he dumped all health insurance companies.

Thirty-two-year old family physician Doug Nunamaker of Wichita, Kan., said after five years of dealing with the red tape of health insurance companies and the high overhead for the staff he hired just to deal with paperwork, he switched to a system of charging his patients a monthly fee plus the price of an office visit or test, CNN/Money reported.

 I’ve recently joined the ranks of San Francisco landlords who have decided that it’s better to keep an apartment empty than to lease it to tenants. Together, we have left vacant about 10,600 rental units. That’s about five percent of the city’s total — or enough space to house up to 30,000 people in a city that barely tops 800,000.

NPR recently moved its 800-member staff into a new 400,000 square-foot headquarters in Washington, D.C.’s Chinatown. FishbowlDC toured the $201 million facility, which includes a “wellness center, which is capable of simple medical procedures, the fitness center, which is staffed by a trainer, and the cafe, which utilizes the same catering company as Google.” There is a landscaped plaza, a store, a 250-seat performance studio, and “30-minute rooms” for recording phone interviews or holding small meetings that glow when occupied. The studios change color according to use, too. The lobby hosts floor-to-ceiling museum-style exhibits, and the elevators feature the voice of Morning Edition correspondent Susan Stamberg. Additionally, the building is expected to be LEED Gold certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, in part, no doubt, thanks to the beehives the organization raises “to help pollinate its green roofs.”

Bristol firearms manufacturer PTR Industries is moving to South Carolina, a company executive confirmed Wednesday.

The company — which said two months ago that it would be relocating once it found a suitable location “friendly to the industry” — will move to Aynor, S.C., near Myrtle Beach, said John McNamara, vice president of sales at PTR.

The gun manufacturer, with about 45 employees, was the first firm to announce its exit from the state following recent gun control legislation. Many of PTR’s employees agreed to the move and even held an informal vote choosing South Carolina over other states.

Other firearms companies have expressed interest in moving or at least expanding outside of Connecticut, with Stag Arms CEO Mark Malkowski planning a visit to South Carolina on Thursday.

Bones are made of collagen and a mineral — soft and brittle materials, respectively. But combine the two into a bone and they become much stronger. The mineral provides structure while collagen distributes energy over a larger area.

The two interlock in complicated ways, so first the researchers modeled a bone on a computer. Software translated this into a design readable by a Stratasys 3D printer capable of printing with two materials. Within hours, the researchers had their synthetic bone. The 3D printer produced a sheet of polymer about half the size of a piece of paper and one-eighth inch thick. Hard polymer formed the hard bricks of mineral while soft polymer worked as flexible collagen mortar. The material was as tough as bone and more than 20 times stronger than printed polymers that resembled just collagen or mineral, the paper said.

Bicycle helmets do an outstanding job of keeping our skulls intact in a major crash. But they do almost nothing to prevent concussions and other significant brain injuries—and the very government agency created to protect us is part of the problem. The time has come to demand something safer.
