This is the Face of Canadian “Anti-Fascism”

5th June 2017

Read it.

As reported hereover the weekend, opponents of the M-103 anti-blasphemy motion gathered on Parliament Hill in Ottawa to protest the implementation of sharia in Canada and support free speech. The protesters were peaceful and law-abiding, but they were confronted by a group of about three times as many antifas who were violent and indifferent to legal niceties.

If you live in Ottawa, take a close look at the faces shown here, because you may want to keep a discreet distance from these worthies if you happen to encounter them in the street. In fact, everyone in Ontario and Quebec would do well to remain alert, because these droogs probably get bused to Toronto and Montreal to engage in a bit of ultra-violence at other free-speech events.

As usual, the ‘anti-fascist’ thugs wore black and disguised their faces. Just like, you know, real fascist street thugs.

And yet Trump is the New Hitler.

Liberals: Men Without Chests

5th June 2017

Steven Hayward looks behind the curtain.

“Men without chests” is C.S. Lewis’s great description in The Abolition of Man of the type of human soul that modern relativism would produce. The complete quote is: “We make men without chests and expect from them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.” Right now this applies to the increasing number of liberals who are wringing their hands over the fact that we have a problem on college campuses. Do tell!

Bellies, yes; chests, no.

Explaining Academia V: Sacred Science

5th June 2017

Severian looks behind the curtain.

Sacred Science. The group’s doctrine or ideology is considered to be the ultimate Truth, beyond all questioning or dispute. Truth is not to be found outside the group. The leader, as the spokesperson for God or for all humanity, is likewise above criticism.

We’re getting to the heart of what makes the American college campus such a perfect SJW boot camp.  The previous four items dealt with behavior; this one concerns ideology.  And Leftism, SJWism, Maoism, Leninism, whatever you want to call it (they’re all basically the same thing) is an ideology.  It’s got an underlying philosophy that is consistent with itself.*  It’s even got a kernel of truth to it, as all successful ideologies do.

Self-Hatred and Transgender Suicide

3rd June 2017

The Other McCain turns over a rock.

Not long ago, my friend Cynthia Yockey and I were discussing the transgender cult when she rather casually said something that struck me as profound: Transgenderism is a sort of suicide, involving the destruction of a hated self. She just threw that idea out in the midst of our phone conversation, but after the call was over, the truth of what she had said stuck with me. After all, what is more basic to our sense of self than being either male or female? And somewhere in the bizarre psychology of transgenderism there must be a profound alienation from the patient’s authentic self. Life is tough, and anyone might become discouraged by a sense of failure, but it takes an extreme kind of discouragement to feel you are so hopelessly doomed as a male that you could improve your life by discarding yourself, so to speak, and becoming an artificial simulacrum of a female (or vice-versa). Indeed, this is a sort of suicide, and yet one of the arguments most often heard from transgender activists is to blame the high suicide rate among transgender people on their opponents. This idea — that transgender “treatment” is the only alternative to suicide — is quite frequently used to promote “acceptance” of transgenderism among children. This is simply emotional blackmail.

The reason proglodytes are so invested in the whole ‘transgender’ thing is because their belief system is based on the notion that humans are perfectible, and therefore anything that smacks of ‘no, you can’t change this’ is something that would destroy the cornerstone of the Narrative, hence is CrimeThink.

New York Times Outs CIA’s Top Spy in Iran, Since He Toes a ‘Hard Line’

3rd June 2017

Bre Payton at The Federalist reported on a shocking decision by The New York Times to out the CIA’s top official overseeing Iran, painting him as a “dark prince” pushing a hardline approach. Explaining Academia IV: Confession

2nd June 2017

Severian turns over a rock.

There’s an entire genre of reeducation camp lit that has endless examples.  Note that they’re almost entirely Asian — since the gulag system was an essential part of the Soviet economy, they pretty much dropped the “reform” part of reform-through-labor.  The Chinese, Koreans, and Vietnamese kept it, though, and refined it on both their own people and captured American personnel.  If you have a strong stomach, check out The Aquariums of Pyongyang, Prisoner of Mao, or any one of many American POW memoirs from Vietnam (e.g. Five Years to Freedom).  The common thread is that these men survived being “struggled” with their personalities intact, despite horrific abuse.  Their fellow prisoners, however, often did not.

This is why college kids are always on the lookout for new witches to burn, new offenses to punish.  It’s certainly not to make the campus “safer,” “more inclusive,” or whatever else they say their motives are.  Check this out, for instance.  I can guarantee you that an Evergreen College professor named Weinstein is as liberal as they come, and his college president agrees with the protestors in every particular.  And yet, in true Red Guard style, they threaten the prof’s life and even force the President to put his arms down while speaking to them.  There’s not a dime’s worth of difference, ideologically, between anyone in that room… and yet, physical violence is threatened by screaming-mad Maolings.  They’re not struggling President Bridges, as he already agrees with them.  He can’t “confess” to any counterrevolutionary crimes, because he hasn’t committed any.  The point of his “confession” — and he will confess to something, if only “holding his arms out in a racist manner” — is to reinforce the protestors’ orthodoxy.

And yet Trump is the New Hitler.

I Got Your Death Panels, Right Here

2nd June 2017

Read it. And watch the video.

“It’s a lot cheaper to grab a couple drugs and kill you than it is to provide you with life sustaining therapy,” Dr. Brian Callister of Reno, NV told the Patients’ Rights Action Fund. “Simple as that.”  His words appeared in a sobering video PRAF released exposing the shockingly limited treatment options available to terminally ill patients.

One particular option, however, is becoming increasingly available to patients – that is, if you can call it an ‘option’ at all.  Physician assisted suicide, now legal in California, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, Washington State, and Washington, D.C., has been recommended more and more frequently.  Yet the healthcare professionals recommending assisted suicide are not necessarily doctors.  Insurance companies are beginning to cash-in on the fact that legalized assisted suicide proves less expensive than covering life-saving procedures. “They want to do whatever the least costly thing is,” Dr. Callister told PRAF.

And if we get a government-paid-for health care system, it will only get worse. Government bureaucrats will not hesitate to kill people who are only going to die anyway rather than spend money on them that could more productively buy votes to keep them in office.

How the Self-Esteem Craze Took Over America

2nd June 2017

Read it.

It seems mawkish now, even by the standards of children’s books, but The Lovables was published as a runaway cultural trend was cresting across North America: the self-esteem craze. If you grew up, or raised a child, during the 1980s or 1990s, you almost certainly remember this sort of material, as well as goofy classroom exercises focusing on how special each individual child was. A certain ethos took hold during this time: It was the job of schools to educate, yes, but also to instill in children a sense of their own specialness and potential.

It wasn’t just schoolkids. During this span, just about everyone, from CEOs to welfare recipients, was told — often by psychologists with serious credentials — that improving their self-esteem could, as The Lovables put it, unlock the gates to more happiness, better performance, and every kind of success imaginable. This was both a personal argument and a political one: The movement, which had its epicenter in California, argued that increasing people’s self-esteem could reduce crime, teen pregnancy, and a host of other social ills — even pollution.

It was not a pretty sight.

With thanks to Debby Witt, a kindred soul.

Oh, the Hysteria!

2nd June 2017

Read it.

If all of the hysterics truly believe that a failure to reduce CO2 emissions will result in catastrophic global warming, they have it within their power to reduce emissions drastically. They can start by getting rid of their cars in favor of bikes and horses, moving to smaller homes, doing without air conditioning, keeping their homes at 50 degrees in the winter, bathing and washing clothes in cold water, growing and raising their own foodstuffs (to eliminate transportation-based emissions), reading by candle light, and throwing out all of their electrical appliances — even including their smart phones, which rely on electrically powered systems.

Which, of course, will never happen. Watch climate-change hypocrites like Leonardo diCaprio and AlGore drive SUVs from their private jets to their U.N.-sponsored meetings if you want to see the Crust in action.

“Blackalaureate”

1st June 2017

Read it.

The National Association of Scholars (NAS) presents a photo essay on a “black only” commencement exercise at Brown University. Known as “blackalaureate,” the event was held at a Providence hotel the day before actual commencement. Graduating African-American students were inducted into something called Onyx, an organization that celebrates the “transition from Black student to Black Alumni.”

During the real commencement, all the black and other “students of color” (except Asians) marched at the front of the processional, with the white students behind. According to NAS’s reporter, since 1979 Brown’s black students have been showcased at the front of the procession. Now, however, the lead group has expanded to include Native Americans and other students of color. This apparently does not include Asian or Asian American students, who were dispersed throughout the procession.

This Is War!

1st June 2017

Gavin McInnes brings the heat.

My talk was canceled at DePaul because the president decided I was “too dangerous.” We created the Proud Boys to protect ourselves and others who were being attacked at speaking events by anarchists who hated our anti-big-government views. The mayor in Berkeley told the police to stand down. What do you expect us to do, say, “Yes, sir, may I have another?” every time someone tries to kill us? I’ve heard rumors the mayor of Portland is going to tell his police to stand down at some forthcoming alt-right events in his city. He’s using the Christian stabbings as proof that the right is violent, and claiming that having any related events would foster a little too much hatred for now. This is infuriating because it solidifies the lie and makes it part of history. The right isn’t violent. The left is. By allowing these sociopaths to shut down free speech with violence you are all but demanding a war. Okay, fine, you got it. It’s official. This is a war.

On Atheism

1st June 2017

ZMan takes it on.

The Prog impulse to root around in the private lives of strangers, imposing their values on everyone, comes from public Protestantism. This is the general belief that societies are judged as a whole, so the faithful have a duty to root out sin and lift up sinners. In the same way, atheists seem to think that their sacred duty is to stamp out Christianity, as if it is a sin preventing mankind from reaching the singularity. It is excessive belief, manifesting as a hostility toward the more conventional expressions of belief.

To be clear, I’m not a believer. I’m down on the end of the scale with Mencken. I don’t know if the Christians are right about a God in heaven, but I don’t know they are wrong either. I don’t know. I can’t know. For all I know we could be a science experiment for some extra-dimensional species. That said, if religious faith brings you happiness, I’m happy for you and wish you the best with it, just as long as you don’t make a nuisance of yourself. In other words, indifference is my preferred position on your religiosity.

I do know I’d never want to live in a world ruled by atheists.

American Retail’s Fast, Furious Decline

31st May 2017

Kevin Williamson chronicles the fall.

Heritage Park Mall is a tomb, a crumbling and boarded-up monument to a particular weird moment in American history when we did that most American of all things: attempt to perfect a community by rebuilding it from scratch. With its shops and restaurants and public spaces, and its proximity to banks and offices, the American shopping mall was the reincarnation of the downtown business district, moved indoors where it could be air-conditioned, efficiently policed, and surrounded by a sprawling Salton Sea of asphalt to provide ample parking. The old downtown died most places, and, now, the new downtown is dying, too: At the highwater mark, there were about 5,000 malls in the United States, and there are now 1,100, at least 400 of which are expected to close in the next few years. In the 1980s, developers built an average of 60 malls a year — and more than 100 in some years. Now, cities from San Bernardino, Calif., to High Point, N.C., are dealing with the husks of these dead retail behemoths. There are documentary films and TED talks about dead malls.

The emergence of the mall as the preeminent public space in American life may seem like one of those weird inexplicable 1980s things, like 18 percent mortgage rates, American Psycho, or the presidential candidacy of Walter Mondale. But it was in a sense only a reversion to ancient norms: In Singapore, there is a large shopping mall called “The Forum” (which was, and is, a common name for malls), while the one in Santo Domingo has a more Hellenic moniker: “Agora.” But if you go back and watch Fast Times at Ridgemont High, what’s really remarkable isn’t the underage sex or the terrible fashion sense or how close in retrospect the 1980s were to the 1960s (nice hippie wagon, Spicoli) or any of that. It’s that all those middle-class, white, suburban high-school kids had jobs.

Bomb-Building 101

31st May 2017

Read it.

The Manchester suicide bomber used used student loans and welfare benefits to finance his terror operations, and others may be doing likewise. This revelation speaks volumes about not only the cultural divide separating Islamists and the West, but also about the West’s own, if I may so phrase it, suicidal tendencies.

A program designed to further democratize universities and extend higher education to ever-larger proportions of the population is now facilitating the ongoing campaigns of young radicals (often of the same rebellious age as university students) to destroy Western civilization. We already knew that the student loan program brought unintended consequences, but perhaps it takes this to provide us with a true perspective on the mischief we are sowing.

Is it possible that our obsession with finding every possible means to decrease the effort and responsibility in our lives – and turn over as much of them as possible to the management of state officials – is creating the mechanisms for eradicating our civilization?

The Hobbesian Net

30th May 2017

ZMan is in the trenches.

I clicked on a link from Drudge and I was taken to a website called CBS Money Watch, which is obviously a CBS property. The first thing I see is a video trying to load. I see the pause button and stop it before it starts. It then starts itself in a few seconds and I stop it again. I hate baked-in video. If I want to watch videos, I’ll go to a video site or turn on the television. The trend of jamming video into sites borders on the sadistic. No one likes this. No one can possible think it is a good idea. Yet, they keep doing it.

Fox and National Geographic are especially bad about this.

Like everyone, I use a combination of blockers and filters on my browser. It’s not that I begrudge the content makers their money. I get that they need to sell ads. I’m OK with it and prefer it over the paywall model. Having 85 pop-ups and hidden audio play automatically, on the other hand, is a dick move that should carry the death penalty. This does nothing but piss people off, which is why ad-blocking software proliferates, along with tools to block plugins. How did this happen? Why would anyone do this?

Because they’re assholes, just like the car salesman who thinks that getting in your face is the way to move product. I have no objection to ads, but I object to stuff moving on the page that distracts me from doing what I came there to do, READ. And if you make a noise without my permission, you’re toast.

It’s another example of people applying the front lash and then complaining about the backlash. Ad-blockers, flash-block, script blockers, etc., would not exist if the web sites had been slightly responsible for their content. Instead, they got caught up in the hype of the “new economy” and tried to turn their customers into content. Even that could have been done with some care, but they carried on like they were doing you a favor and thereby created a market for these defensive browser add-ons.

And don’t get me started about ‘software piracy’. If you’re not boarding a boat with a gun in your hand, IT IS NOT PIRACY. It Just Isn’t.

Internet business, particularly the content side, is the exact opposite. The business model seems to be based on assaulting the customers in ever more creative ways. Twitter, which should be like radio in terms of a business model, is at war with its customers. The web designers appear to be sitting around, wondering how they can make the experience less pleasant for the user. In order to use your mobile devise to consume web content, you need a script blocker. Otherwise, your browser will lock up and force a restart.

Which is why I don’t use Twitter.

The Fusion Party

30th May 2017

Victor Davis Hanson lays it out for you.

The Democrats are following the lead of the progressive media — together, they now form the anti-Trump brigade.
Is there a Democratic-party alternative to President Trump’s tax plan?
Is there a Democratic congressional proposal to stop the hemorrhaging and impending implosion of Obamacare?
Do Democrats have some sort of comprehensive package to help the economy grow or to deal with the recent doubling of the national debt?
What is the Democratic alternative to Trump’s apparent foreign policy of pragmatic realism or his neglect of entitlement reform?
The answers are all no, because for all practical purposes there is no Democratic party as we have traditionally known it.
It is no longer a liberal (a word now replaced by progressive) political alternative to conservatism as much as a cultural movement fueled by coastal elites, academics, celebrities — and the media. Its interests are not so much political as cultural. True to its new media identity, the Democratic party is against anything Trump rather than being for something. It seeks to shock and entertain in the fashion of a red-carpet celebrity or MSNBC talking head rather than to legislate or formulate policy as a political party.

New Name, Same Game: ACORN Revived as Soros-Funded ‘Democracy’ Network

The wreckage of ACORN exposed the connections between these left-wing groups and the Alinsky tactics used by former “community organizer” Barack Obama. Destroying ACORN as an organization, however, did not destroy the idea behind it, and many of the same people are now organizing a new network.

Economists Are Not Therapists

27th May 2017

Don Boudreaux, a Real Economist, explains the nature of reality to some who Really Need it.

For the first time I see something that I don’t recall seeing in the past – namely, economists who endorse free trade are often criticized, as they are here, for not being emotional or psychological or spiritual therapists.

I have nothing against such therapists.  I have nothing against people who use such therapists.  Such therapists, I’m sure, often do genuine good for those suffering loss, grief, anguish, anger, anxiety, fear, or depression.  But I’m an economist and not a therapist.  My job is to address people’s actual concerns insofar as these concerns are about how the economy actually works and what are the likely consequences of government interventions.  My job is not to sugar coat reality.  My job is not to hide reality from the public.  And it certainly isn’t to distort reality.  (Politicians and media personalities do quite enough of that.)

A favorite cliché of the proglodyte Left is ‘We don’t care how much you know until we know how much you care.’ Such people are morons who put ‘feeling’ ahead of ‘thinking’, which results as you see them in places where the proglodyte Left rule, from the Left Coast to Venezuela. Those who feel first and think later are responsible for a lot of the suffering in this world, not least because they feel free to oppress people who don’t agree with them and act the same way. These Care Bares are the ones that encourage stupid shit, like crossing the Mediterranean in a makeshift boat in the hopes of getting a free ride once they get to Europe, and evil shit, like encouraging a young mother to kill her child so that she is spared from dealing with the consequences of her own thoughtlessness.

Explaining Academia: Demand for Purity

27th May 2017

This one’s pretty obvious, so I’ll just point out Nietzsche’s observation about purity rules as will to power — the Brahmins used ludicrous asceticism to impose the caste system on society.  This is the point of “rape culture” hysteria.  Not even drunk college kids are stupid enough not to notice the blatant contradiction between “one in four college girls is raped!” and “we demand free college education for everyone!”  The point is to make everyone a potential rapist, with his precise degree of guilt to be determined by the campus’ shrillest feminists on a case-by-case basis.

Single-Payer Slayer

22nd May 2017

Steven Hayward looks at the slow-motion train wreck that is California.

Out here in California the latest Progressive cause—after high speed rail and solving climate change all by ourselves—is a state-based single-payer health care system. There is a bill (SB 562) that has passed out of one state Senate committee already, along with talk of a ballot initiative, and if those fail, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a certain candidate for governor next year, is talking about universal single-payer health care as a centerpiece of his campaign. (Aside: I’ll predict right now that Newsom will be California’s next governor, because isn’t it obvious that in its advanced state of decadence, California deserves a governor named Gavin.)

Now before reading further, take in the fact that California total state budget at the moment is about $180 billion.

And now take in the analysis of the bill from the state Senate Appropriations Committee (run by Democrats, remember), which has estimated that the single-payer system SB 562 contemplates would cost . . . $400 billion.

Keep your eye on this one, as it will be fun to watch Dem-on-Dem mayhem. The unions are unlikely to smile on this idea, for starters. But several Progressive interest groups promise to run primary challengers against any Democrat who votes against the bill when and if it comes to the floor.

America’s Cities Are Running Out of Room

22nd May 2017

Read it.

A shortage of homes for sale has bedeviled U.S. house hunters in recent years, so why don’t builders build more? One problem is that they’re running out of lots to build on—at least in the places that people want to live.

Cities that were sprawling before the Great Recession have begun to sprawl again. Space-constrained cities, meanwhile, have run out of room to build. That reality has spurred developers to focus on center-city neighborhoods where high-density building is allowed—and new units command exceedingly high prices.

And yet all of the ‘urban planners’ are still convinced that ‘high density’ is the way to go.

Uh, no.

Thousands of Union Protestors Disrupt Yale Graduation

22nd May 2017

Read it.

Thousands of union activists have swarmed downtown New Haven to force Yale University to negotiate a contract that would bring its recently formed union to the bargaining table.

Led by Yale’s graduate student union Local 33 Unite Here, the crowd is compromised of a mish-mash of local unions, students from up and down the East Coast, and Yale retirees. The protest is occurring directly outside the Ivy’s 316th commencement ceremonies and is set to bleed well into the afternoon. City officials have blocked off four streets (Elm St., College St., High St. and Church St.) and formed a police barricade between graduating students and activists.

These are the four streets that bound the Old Campus, the quadrangle where graduations are held.

At noon, a light drizzle descended upon the crowd.

No doubt God peeing on the whole shebang. What goes around, comes around.

Undercover Video Exposes Deep Contradiction at the Heart of Planned Parenthood

22nd May 2017

Read it.

When Live Action called Planned Parenthood clinics asking for other services ranging from prenatal care to adoption to parenting resources, staff at seven of the clinics said to “just go online” or “just Google” those services.

In two especially chilling moments in the video, Planned Parenthood staffers tell women who are looking for an ultrasound that they don’t actually provide ultrasounds—not unless the plan is to take the baby’s life through abortion, that is.

“We don’t do any ultrasounds for prenatal care,” a staff member at a Council Bluffs, Iowa, Planned Parenthood tells a caller. “We do them when we’re doing abortions, but not for any other reason.”

Then they ought to call themselves ‘Planned Non-Parenthood’. Margaret Sanger’s dream of eliminating the Undesirables proceeds apace.

A graphic at the end of Live Action’s video shows that the corporation “performs” nearly 35 percent of all abortions in the U.S. compared with less than 2 percent of breast exams, less than 1 percent of pap smears, and less than two percent of cancer screenings.

I’ll bet they’re focusing on their ‘core competency’. They’ll probably win some sort of business award for that.

There’s Something Fundamentally Wrong With Liberals

22nd May 2017

Derek Hunter makes a discovery.

That liberals are hypocrites is not news. Just take a look at the net worth of any Democratic Party leader who routinely rails against the “1 percent.” But in the age of Trump, where the hatred that normally drives what we’re told is the “tolerant” left has been turned up to 11. All standards have gone out the window; no hypocrisy is too great, no conspiracy theory too insane for someone on the left to advance it and its drone army to believe.

It must be easy to be a liberal in 2017. You don’t have to think for yourself. You don’t have to prove anything. And your life can swirl in a bubble where you’ll never have anything you say challenged in a serious way. Liberals have become the bad guy in Lethal Weapon 2 – their membership in the progressive club grants them a sort of diplomatic immunity from reality.

The same people who cheered the release of traitor Bradley Manning after serving only seven of 35 years for giving thousands of classified national security secrets to Wikileaks clutch their pearls to this day over the same website publishing unclassified emails from the Clinton campaign.

Anthony Horowitz Says He Was ‘Warned Off’ Including a Black Character in His New Book

22nd May 2017

Read it.

I’ve always said how much I miss the 1950s, and here they are back again.

Much like President Trump getting Mexico to pay for building the wall, Democrats (and their fellow-travelers) are now getting black people to re-segregate themselves. I guess they just miss Jim Crow.

1 + 1 = You’re a Racist

22nd May 2017

Read it.

Piper Harron is an unhappy-looking black woman whose mood would be greatly improved if white male math professors would just ’fess up to their unearned privilege and quit their jobs. She is currently a “temporary assistant professor” in mathematics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and I think we can all agree that this is the first time any of us has ever heard of that school.

Piper holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Princeton University, which sounds impressive until you take into account the mathematical fact that a study from Princeton reveals that blacks are given a handicap of 230 SAT points compared to whites when it comes to admissions standards.

On her resume, she makes the startling and mathematically improbable claim that during her eleven years of collegiate studies, she not only “survived external and internalized misogyny,” she also suffered the horrors of “external and internalized racism.” What are the odds?

Who Are the Craziest Democrats of All?

22nd May 2017

Read it.

The Democratic Party is far gone in hate, but who do you suppose are the most lunatic Dems of all? The California Democrats are obvious candidates and, sure enough, their state convention yesterday concluded with a chant: “Fuck Donald Trump!” led by California Democratic Party chairman John Burton.

Now, just imagine how the AP would have reported on a state Republican convention that concluded in middle-finger-raised chants of “Fuck Barack Obama!” Do you think that would have been described as “a sign of the vigor of the party’s distaste for the president”? No, I don’t think so, either. California’s Democrats have gone insane, but how far behind is the Associated Press?

Nine People Shot in Philly While Reportedly Dancing on Facebook Live

21st May 2017

Read it.

Police say roughly 30 people were partying on a sidewalk while live streaming on Facebook’s platform when an unknown gunman (or gunmen) opened fire on the crowd, reports the Associated Press. As many as 27 shots were fired in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood, a northern part of the city where fatal shootings occur relatively often.

From Wikipedia: “As of 2010, Strawberry Mansion was 94.3% black or African American, 2.3% white or European American, 1.6% Hispanic, 0.8% Asian, and 1% all other.”

Black Lives Matter — except to black people.

If they don’t take it seriously, why should anybody else? Just sayin’.

Democrats Bring the H8: Students Shut Down Northwestern Class to Protest ICE Representative’s Visit

21st May 2017

Read it.

Student protesters shut down a sociology class at Northwestern University on Tuesday, after a professor invited an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) public relations officer to be a guest speaker.

The protesters, chanting and waving banners, argued that the officer’s presence on campus represented a threat to undocumented students. But the professor — who canceled the class during the protest because she was concerned for the speaker’s safety — said she had been hoping to start a dialogue.

“The goal was to bring in somebody who was familiar with how that agency is structured,” Beth Redbird, an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology, told TIME.

They aren’t interested in knowing, they’re interested in winning — don’t confuse them with facts, just bow your head and obey.

How Academia Resembles a Drug Gang

19th May 2017

Read it.

And not in a good way.

Academic systems rely on the existence of a supply of “outsiders” ready to forgo wages and employment security in exchange for the prospect of uncertain security, prestige, freedom and reasonably high salaries that tenured positions entail. Drawing on data from the US, Germany and the UK, Alexandre Afonso looks at how the academic job market is structured in many respects like a drug gang, with an expanding mass of outsiders and a shrinking core of insiders.

Much like the nomenklatura of the old Soviet Union, and I suspect the resemblance is more than coincidental.
