Now, I’m not saying you should go to college.  I’m on record, in fact, saying that college is the biggest scam ever perpetrated on the American public.  But if you feel you must go, here’s all you need to ace any class less rigorous than Chemistry:

  • discourse
  • intersectionality
  • reify

Consider the Possibility That We Are Led by Idiots

1st April 2017

Read it.

One of the things I endeavor to remind people of consistently when I am asked to speak to groups around the country is to consider the possibility that we are led by a pack of idiots. This is not out of any animus toward our leadership class, but borne out of experience. I have seen cabinet secretaries who type with two fingers. I have listened as senior staffers with authority over constructing legislation in a particular scientific field engage in debate on whether or not the moon landing was a hoax. I have seen a man charged with revolutionizing incredibly complex government information technology systems who did not know how to use a thumb drive. I have seen the bill from a highly paid consultant, an incredibly expensive bill, for a PowerPoint deck that I had seen him present for another client with different logos. And, more personally, I have been told at many varied points in my career by accomplished people why the thing I wished to build was impossible, why it would be a failure, and why I should instead join company X, Y, or Z, none of which are relevant or in some cases even exist today. This is why we should never forget the possibility that underneath the façade of government and business, which projects authority and success, there are a host of fools who are just along for the ride and got to where they are by dint of internal politics, a nice resume, and good timing.

Native Hawaiian Activists Could Force $1.4 Billion Telescope Out Of US

31st March 2017

Read it.

Astronomers signed an agreement with the Spanish government to build the giant Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) in Spain’s Canary Islands, if it can’t be put on top of a mountain in Hawaii. Protesters repeatedly attempted to block the construction of the telescope and have attempted to stop it with lawsuits.

Native Hawaiians are trying to block the telescope because they consider the mountain sacred. Environmentalists also opposed the project, and their opposition forced the U.S. National Academies of Science to reconsider 15 years of planning to construct TMT on Mauna Kea.

I have an idea: All white people depart Hawaii and leave it to the natives and Barack Obama. They can go back to eating poi and we won’t have to listen to them any more. Eventually the Japanese and Chinese will own the place and raise the tone a great deal, at which point it will be safe for civilized people to return.

She Never Joined a Union. But Union Fees Got Deducted From Her Paycheck.

30th March 2017

Read it.

A find example of how Democrat politicians conspire with their base special interest groups to cheat taxpayers.

In an affidavit, the Fergus Falls resident says she is convinced the union, SEIU Healthcare Minnesota, forged her signature so it could start deducting the dues.

As The Daily Signal previously reported, a relatively small number of Minnesota’s 27,000 eligible personal care assistants voted in favor of an affiliate of Service Employees International Union, or SEIU, becoming their representative in collective bargaining.

Now personal care assistants such as Johansen have banded together in an effort to set a new election to decertify SEIU Healthcare Minnesota, in part because of what their lawyers describe as questionable tactics and the evidence of fraud.

Civil War on the Left, Part 38: The Beclowning of Science

24th March 2017

Read it.

With the sensational success of the Wymyn’s march a few days after Trump’s inauguration on everyone’s mind (/sarc), the science community decided that it needs a march of its own, because as everyone knows Trump hates science, and as we also know there was no science at all before federal funding.

The March for Science is scheduled for April 22, which is Earth Day (also Lenin’s birthday by “coincidence”). And like the Wymnyn’s March, there is a lot of gnashing of teeth at the intersection of intersectionality. (Among other things, apparently the “diversity policy” for the march as been re-written four times.)

Patents Are a Big Part of Why We Can’t Own Nice Things

22nd March 2017

Read it.

When you buy something physical—a toaster, a book, or a printer, for example—you expect to be free to use it as you see fit: to adapt it to suit your needs, fix it when it breaks, re-use it, lend it, sell it, or give it away when you’re done with it. Your freedom to do those things is a necessary aspect of your ownership of those objects. If you can’t do them, because the seller or manufacturer has imposed restrictions or limitations on your use of the product, then you don’t really own them. Traditionally, the law safeguards these freedoms by discouraging sellers from imposing certain conditions or restrictions on the sale of goods and property, and limiting the circumstances in which those restrictions may be imposed by contract.

But some companies are relentless in their quest to circumvent and undermine these protections. They want to control what end users of their products can do with the stuff they ostensibly own, by attaching restrictions and conditions on purchasers, locking down their products, and locking you (along with competitors and researchers) out. If they can do that through patent law, rather than ordinary contract, it would mean they could evade legal limits on contracts, and that any one using a product in violation of those restrictions (whether a consumer or competitor) could face harsh penalties for patent infringement.

Our ‘intellectual property’ laws are insane.

Looking Into the Katyn Massacre

20th March 2017

Read it.

U.S. government officials have often been hesitant to take the Soviet Union to task on their humanitarian crimes. This reluctance to confront Moscow was usually an effort to avoid worsening already poor relations. After World War II, for example, the U.S. was willing to let Soviet war crimes committed during the war go unchallenged despite clear evidence of Soviet guilt. As early as 1943 the United States was aware that the Katyn Forest Massacre had been carried out by the Soviet secret police, or NKVD. Yet, in order to avoid inciting Soviet retaliation, the US remained silent.

Crap Appliances

19th March 2017

Read it.

Now refrigerators last 8–10 years, if you are fortunate. How in the world have our appliances regressed so much in the past few decades?  I’ve bought and sold refrigerators and freezers from the 1950’s that still work perfectly fine. I’ve come across washers and dryers from the 1960’s and 1970’s that were still working like the day they were made. Now, many appliances break and need servicing within 2-3 years and, overall, new appliances last 1/3 to 1/4 as long as appliances built decades ago. They break more frequently, and sooner, than ever before. They rust and deteriorate much quicker than in the past. Why is this happening, and what’s really going on? I’ve been wrestling over these questions for years while selling thousands of appliances, and more recently, working with used appliance sellers and repair techs all across the country. The following is what I’ve discovered.

The Hate Group That Incited the Middlebury Melee

19th March 2017

Read it.

Dees also started a nonprofit, which he named the Southern Poverty Law Center. But he gave up neither the high life nor the direct-mail business. He lives in luxury with his fifth wife and still runs the SPLC, which has used the mail-order model to amass a fortune. Its product line is an unusual one: For the past 47 years, Morris Dees has been selling fear and hate.

The business model is simple, albeit cynical, and best illustrated by its most famous case. In 1987, a Dees-led legal team won a $7 million judgment against the Ku Klux Klan in a wrongful death suit on behalf of Beulah Mae Donald, the mother of a 19-year-old kid murdered by members of the racist group. But the defendants’ total assets amounted to a building worth $52,000. That’s how much Mrs. Donald, who died the following year, received. But Dees reaped $9 million for the SPLC from fundraising solicitations about the case, including one showing a grisly photo of Michael Donald’s corpse.

Today, the center boasts a treasury of more than $300 million, the richest civil rights group in the country.

But with the Ku Klan Klan literally out of business, how was the SPLC able to frighten people into still donating? That’s where the AEI’s Charles Murray reenters our story, along with many other mainstream conservative groups. Scaring the bejesus out of people requires new bogeymen, and lots of them.

Internal Brain Drain

17th March 2017

Read it.

Experts have warned for years now that our rates of geographic mobility have fallen to troubling lows. Given that some areas have unemployment rates around 2 percent and others many times that, this lack of movement may mean joblessness for those who could otherwise work.

The brain drain also encourages a uniquely modern form of cultural detachment. Eventually, the young people who’ve moved out marry — typically to partners with similar economic prospects. They raise children in increasingly segregated neighborhoods, giving rise to something the conservative scholar Charles Murray calls “super ZIPs.” These super ZIPs are veritable bastions of opportunity and optimism, places where divorce and joblessness are rare.

As one of my college professors recently told me about higher education, “The sociological role we play is to suck talent out of small towns and redistribute it to big cities.” There have always been regional and class inequalities in our society, but the data tells us that we’re living through a unique period of segregation.

The Fading Star

16th March 2017

ZMan blows the whistle.

Celebrity intellectuals are not famous because they have offered up a great insight or discovery. There’s no money in that. New ideas challenge the orthodoxy. The people with the money to help an aspiring celebrity intellectual live the sort of life they deserve tend not to like challenges to the orthodoxy. Instead they gravitate to people who confirm that the current arrangements are as the heavens ordained. That’s [Malcolm] Gladwell. His celebrity is rooted in his ability to flatter the Cloud People.

The typical path to celebrity for these guys is not much different than the way mediocre comics get rich and famous. The game is to flatter the right audience. Making a bunch of bad whites in the hill country feel good about themselves is not a path to the easy life. You can make a nice living, but you’re not going to be doing Ted Talks or getting five figures to do the college circuit. Figure how to let the Cloud People on the Upper West Side feel like champions and you have the golden ticket.

Bodies are still being recovered from a clandestine grave in Mexico’s Veracruz state that a local prosecutor says could turn out to be the largest in the country. Jorge Winckler Ortiz, the state attorney general of Veracruz, says that at one large site, 250 skulls have been found, with more excavation to be done.

Winckler says the bodies are those of people murdered by gangs, with the complicity of the government. He added that officials had also deceived families who asked for help in identifying whether their missing loved ones might be in the graves.

Why We Have Daylight Saving Time and Why We Should Scrap It

13th March 2017

Read it.

Let’s first dispense with some of the myths behind Daylight Saving Time (DST). Many people assume we enacted DST to help farmers. That’s nonsense. Most of my relatives who aren’t in prison are farmers. I have no idea what time they wake up in the morning because whenever I visit they’ve already eaten lunch by the time I’m mixing a hangover cure. They rise before dawn to feed the cows, mow the corn, construct scarecrows, etc. All without directives from Congress.

Daylight Saving Time came about because of World War I. Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States all pushed our clocks forward to better coordinate waking hours with light bulb use, thereby conserving electricity. The program lapsed until World War II, when President Franklin Roosevelt instituted “War Time Zones,” which were basically the same thing, only with a cooler-sounding name. Astonishingly, despite originating as a temporary FDR government program, War Time Zones actually ceased at the conclusion of the war. Thereafter time zones defaulted to municipalities until 1966, when Congress enacted a permanent annual Daylight Saving Time, in part to standardize the plethora of discordant clocks across the nation.

Today all of these reasons are outdated. We probably won’t go to war with Germany again for another 20 or 30 years. And all of the economic benefits seem to cancel each other out. While we saved about 1 percent on electricity when first enacting DST, that figure is now offset by an increase in air conditioning. The idea that we’ll all revert back to discordant municipal time zones set by the sundial in our mayor’s front yard is utter nonsense. Everyone I know owns a smartphone, set automatically by a clutch of nerds in Cupertino.

University Students Demand Philosophers Such as Plato and Kant Are Removed From Syllabus Because They Are White

The student union at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) insists that when studying philosophy “the majority of philosophers on our courses” should be from Africa and Asia.

That makes a certain degree of sense.

The union said it is part of wider campaign to “decolonise” the university, as it seeks to “address the structural and epistemological legacy of colonialism”.

That, however, does not.

It comes after education leaders warned that universities will be forced to pander to the demands of “snowflake” students, however unreasonable they might be.

Alt-Left Insanity: Can We Have a Day Without Whiny, Male Liberals, Too?

10th March 2017

Read it.

Probably not. They’re everywhere, like foot-fungus.

In the meantime, this week was the Day Without “Some” Women. Hopefully, next we’ll get a day without liberal men, too. We saw lefties proclaim that women shouldn’t work on International Women’s Day, essentially arguing that the way for women to get ahead is for them to skip work. That’s advice given by no boss ever. But it worked for the lazy lefties of Alexandria, Va., who opted out of teaching the children and decided to make parents do the job they were paid to do.

Our friends over at Fusion even bothered to interview some of the strikers in a piece headlined oh so subtly: “Talking to 11 NYC women (and one man) on Women’s Day about striking, Trump, and why capitalism sucks.” Yes, this is the site of an actual, alleged news organization. Anyhow, the comments from strikers include: When one couple was asked “Is this your first protest?” the “reporter” got an illuminating answer: “No! We try to go to one every week. We’re retired now.”

That cuts to the heart of the alt-lefty protest movement and why media and especially Republicans on the Hill need to ignore it. It’s not a tidal wave of growing opposition, it’s a group of people who do it as a vocation or even a vacation. Here’s the rest of the actual quote: “Sunday it was Standing Rock. [To her wife] Honey, what was the other one we went to on Saturday? There was Not My President, Planned Parenthood. Oh—and every day we make calls to our representatives in Minnesota.”

SPLC 2: The Search for More Money

8th March 2017

Steve Sailer follows the money.

It was a bad week for the Southern Poverty Law Center, America’s self-appointed witch-sniffers-in-chief. For decades, the SPLC, despite its comic history of money-grubbing and out-of-control vilification, has been treated by the mainstream media as the unquestionable authority about who the Bad Guys are.

Finally, however, doubts have been allowed to surface about an organization that is in reality America’s richest hate group (with financial assets of $302,800,000).

Since the American people elected Donald Trump, the SPLC has been doing what the SPLC does best—whipping up fear and loathing among both violence-prone young thugs and elderly, affluent, easily confused Jewish donors nervous that the Cossacks will soon be riding through the streets of Brookline.

But the SPLC stumbled into two embarrassments last week.

The Storm Troopers of the New World Order — In Nashville

6th March 2017

Read it.

As we reported yesterday, the pro-Trump rally in Denver on Saturday March 4 was attended, but not disrupted, by European-style Antifas, or “anti-fascists”. Similar “March 4” rallies were held across the country, and Antifa groups — dressed in the same hip grungy black-masked outfits, carrying the same flags and banners — showed up at many of the other ones. These groups had no noticeable presence in the United States before Inauguration Day, and now they are being deployed everywhere to counter with their menacing presence any support for President Trump.

It’s as if they sprang into existence fully-formed, like Athena from the head of Zeus. Such uniformity of appearance and simultaneous deployments at multiple locations are further evidence that the entire operation is being funded, controlled, and coordinated internationally on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Storm Troopers of the New World Order — In Denver

5th March 2017

Read it.

We’ve been posting about European Antifa groups for more than ten years. “Antifa” (or “anti-fa”) is short for “anti-fascist”, and the Antifas are prominent in almost any European demonstration or riot against the right wing. If a politician expresses sentiments that are even mildly nationalistic, or talks about limiting immigration, he can expect an Antifa manifestation outside his offices, complete with black clothing, black masks and hoods, flags and banners featuring logos and slogans of the Antifa and affiliated groups, burning trash containers, flung paving stones, and violent confrontations with police.

I learned about the Antifa was when I was first delving into the Danish anti-fascist scene. Back then (2007) a local manifestation of the anarchists known as the Autonomer was more prominent in Copenhagen than the Antifa; I don’t know if that’s still true. But the Antifa groups were dominant in Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands. With the help of El Inglés and our Flemish correspondent VH, we posted a couple of investigative reports on the anti-fascist scene in Northern and Western Europe.

Since then it has become clear that the Antifas act as the enforcement arm of the permanent bureaucratic state in Europe; that is, the establishment that remains in place and manages political, cultural, and economic affairs regardless of which party is in power in any given country — what we now know as the “Deep State” here in the USA. Such functions are particularly concentrated in the bureaucracy of the European Union, which has no democratic component whatsoever — the European Parliament is a figurehead body (and a gravy train for those elected to it), lacking any significant power.

Against Empathy & Einfühlung

5th March 2017

Jonah Goldberg.

What I find fascinating about the forces of empathy is the way they used their claims of superior understanding as a way to fend off arguments they didn’t like and facts they didn’t want to hear. I think this is often a problem for experts. They think they know, understand and feel their subjects so much better than everyone else that they can’t be argued with. It’s how intellectuals end up being owned by their theories and it’s how some historians become advocates for the subjects they study.
One can really see how this kind of empathy corrupts music critics. They become bitter and angry partisans for their favorite artists against all detractors. That’s probably okay for music critics, but it’s a really dangerous mindset for economists and other policymakers. Your empathy gives you a sense of ownership of someone or something, but it can also result in that someone or something having ownership of you.

We see this a lot with respect to immigration. The bleeding-hearts are so sympathetic to the plight of e.g. kids who were born in this country and so (formally) citizens, or brought here when very young, and who now face having their parents (and perhaps themselves) sent back to a ‘home country’ that they never knew, that they forget (or ignore as unimportant) the fundamental fact that they are here illegally. They bitch and moan about the Heartless Government breaking up families without reflecting on the fact that the actual family-wreckers are the adults who chose to put their kids in the position of being criminals.

Our Miserable 21st Century

4th March 2017

Nicholas Eberstadt lays out why everything sucks.

It turns out that the year 2000 marks a grim historical milestone of sorts for our nation. For whatever reasons, the Great American Escalator, which had lifted successive generations of Americans to ever higher standards of living and levels of social well-being, broke down around then—and broke down very badly.

The warning lights have been flashing, and the klaxons sounding, for more than a decade and a half. But our pundits and prognosticators and professors and policymakers, ensconced as they generally are deep within the bubble, were for the most part too distant from the distress of the general population to see or hear it. (So much for the vaunted “information era” and “big-data revolution.”) Now that those signals are no longer possible to ignore, it is high time for experts and intellectuals to reacquaint themselves with the country in which they live and to begin the task of describing what has befallen the country in which we have lived since the dawn of the new century.
